  • Low Carb Gardening for the Fall

    Hi everyone

It's early September and it's time in most places to start planting/planning that Fall garden.

Many spring crops can be grown again in the fall. Spinach, the lettuces, radishes, herbs, and snow/sugar snap peas are great fall crops. They enjoy the cooler weather and in some areas can grow well into December.

It does take some care at night when the temperatures drop, but you can protect your crops by covering them with newspaper or even an old bedsheet.

So, start planting and by October-November you'll be eating fresh veggies from your fall garden.

don't forget the greens like mustard, kale, collards and turnips love the cool fall weather and some old timers swear collards taste best after a frost.

      What about broccoli and cauliflower?

      Also don't forget beets!

We put our second crop of tomatos in about 2 weeks ago!

Problem we're having here is finding seeds!

I have some broccoli rabe seedlings growing in my garden. I didn't intentionally sow them, I let a couple of the broccoli rabe from spring go to seed. So that will be ready in October.

If you do Fall planting you have to plan ahead and buy extra seeds in the Spring. Just keep those seeds in a cool, dry place over the summer and they'll do fine.

Well, the snow peas are growing! Two weeks ago, I also planted "mache" a type of salad green and arugula. I have a few shoots coming up. Last week I planted some leaf lettuce---Black Seeded Simpson and I'm still waiting for that to show any activity, but the onions I planted are coming up and will be ready for green onion harvest in about 3 weeks.

I found some seeds the other day -- I was drugged up on pain killers so I don't remember what I bought, but I'll post what they were next week, I'm pretty sure I got some small beets, and mixed greens (lettcue types) anyway, I now know a garden place that gets shipments of seeds in the spring and in the fall and they even have a big guide on the wall showing which seeds to plant now! Its my new favorite garden store!

Our second crop of tomatos is doing great, we have a bunch of small tomatos already growing and our jalepeno's and mexi-bells are still producing like crazy! Looks like i may get one more batch of salsa to can! Yippee

Nope, it's not too late. If you are in an area with very mild or temperate winters, you can most likely grow veggies all year around. We get snow and below freezing temps here, so I can't do that unless I spend the money on a greenhouse.....

if you are in the 90s you might actually need to start your plants indoors. Many greens will not germinate when the temp is too hot.
