    Can someone please explain what the word "Broil" means for a brit atkineer..............

    I don't know if it is different for Brits... we Yanks use it to mean to cook below the flame or heating element, fairly close to the heat.

      There are also vertical broilers. They are sort of like toasters.

      Broiling is direct cooking at high heat with little to no cooking surface intervening. Technically, grilling and broiling are the same, as you can broil from below as well. But if you say that you could get into the odd symantic arguement.

      Unless you put "it" on a stick or in a spinning drum. Then it's called roasting.

      You roast marshmellos.
      You roast peppers.
      You roast coffee.

      I have no idea who makes up these rules. But I'm blaming the english. Bad things happen when you mix french and german. :wave
