  • How to count chickpeas

A favourite snack of mine is roasted chickpeas. I buy the canned chickpeas in water, drain them, toss with olive oil, salt and cayenne, and roast them for 45 minutes at 400 degrees. The result is essentially toasted chickpeas with a soft/squishy center. Its delicious.

But I have no idea how to count these. Fitday has counts for dried chickpeas, and boiled chickpeas. The USDA database is no better. I wouldn't consider these dried chickpeas, because they are not even remotely as dry/light as the kind you can buy bagged, but they're not boiled either, and definitely not as heavy as they are when 'raw.' Anyone have ideas on the nutritional information for something like this?

I'd go by the count on the label on the can, If the can says its like say 4 portions, then just divide the finished result into 4 portions and use the same count as on the can, cooking them is not going to make the carbs decrease or increase. Does that make any sense?

It does. I guess my problem is that I weigh all my food - so cooking them changes their weight in the sense that if the label calls a serving 30g, 30g of them raw is less chickpeas than 30g of them after I've baked them.

But I didn't think of it in terms of portions. When I get home, I'll have a look and see what the label calls a serving size, divide it by the entire 540mL can, and then divide the chickpeas up into portions based on that. Thanks for the idea.

Hmm, I dont' weigh anything but I see what you're saying. O.K. divide them in portions, then count them! LOL< see how many chickpeas average in a portion, then you'll have to count your first batch and weigh them to see what they weigh and go from there, wow, who'da thunk it'd be so much trouble to figure out the carb count of a lil' ol' chick pea!

don't forget to add the carbs from your spices into the final carb count. You don't have to use the can's portion size as your eating size just to get the carb count for your snack once you know how many carbs are in your total bag you can weigh it and then calculate how many are in each snack serving you eat cuase it might take 20 to satisfy your hunger today and only 10 the next time.

I'd be interested to see how much weight your chickpeas lose when roasted.

          Happy low carbing.

Sounds good to me, MoG! I'll give it a go tonight when I get home, and I'll be sure to report back.

Heh, the spices are the easy part, 2big!

I love them with tomato sauce and meat ........ I think they´re quite high in carbs, aren´t they?
