  • Hypoglycemia help

I've been diagnosed with this wonderful thing and have been advised by my dr to try Atkins.

Here I am, day one and my sugar is seriously low for me. Usually, it is around 85 when I get up and stayes about 115 about 2 hours after a meal. This causes me to be VERY tired and seriously ravenous. I mean, I want to eat the dishes after I finish the meal.

Since today is my first day on program, my blood sugar never got above 80, which as you can imagine has left me with little energy to even type this. (I just ate some cheese and I feel a little better but I know in about an hour I won't be able to open my eyes).

    What I was wondering is:
    A. Does this diet IMPROVE these sypmtoms--even if my blood sugar remains the same?

    B. Will (or has anyone else) noticed that their blood sugar has stabalized after induction and have started feeling a ton better?

    C. Am I going to feel this exhausted forever?

    D. Are there any ideas to help raise my blood sugar to help me feel better without eating the obvious?

These are just some of the thoughts floating around my head. If anyone can give me some actual experiences or ideas, I'd be so appreciative.

    Re: Hypoglycemia help

It will get better. Just be sure that you don't try to cut your carbs too low. Follow the plan, and try to stick close to the 65% fat / 5% carbs / 30% protein ratio. Try to include some of everything each time you eat, and your sugar levels won't spike or plummet.

Try eating 5-6 smaller meals instead of 3 larger ones.

If you haven't tried it, you might use www.fitday.com to help you plan things better.

I used to be just like you -- couldn't go through a day without feeling like I had been drug through a wringer. But things are different now.

Good luck. Keep us posted as to how you're doing.

      Re: Hypoglycemia help

Well at least that gives me a ray of hope!!

I visited my dr for a follow up today and she says I should be tested for sleep apnea. She suspects that my insane tiredness not be from my low sugar but instead may be coming from issues with sleeping.

However, she says that losing weight may help the problem, but until then I'll have to go for a sleep study to check out if I actually stop breathing when sleeping.

As far as Atkins, she was really excited to see that I have already started losing, and she said, "I'm so happy to see you so commited to this." Little does she know how excited I am to have finally found an answer to my serious battle with addiction to carbs and sugar. ^.^

Just a year ago, she was telling me a good way to lose weight was to just pretend the kitchen didn't exsist.

      haha.

I'm a reactive hypoglycemic and Atkins stopped the symptoms dead in it's tracks.

          Re: Hypoglycemia help

what you are experiencing as you begin Atkins is what we call induction flu and you will have many flu like symptoms tiredness and lewthargy are just 2 of them then when you get your ketosis going and really rev up your fat burning system you will get a burst of energy and wonder why you ever thought you needed sugar for energy before.

Whewn you blood sugar is low our bodies product glucagon which exists in a negative feed back loop with insulin the sugar reacting hormone. Since we want this hiormone out and running in our blood we don't eat foods which stimulate insulin production this includes not only high glycemic carbs but also too much protein and caffeine just to name a few insulin stimulants.

As your body builds more of the carrier molecules, enzymes, and coenzymes needed for fatty acid oxidation and more cellular mitochondria in your mucles you will become a much better fat burner ans your blood sugar swings should stabilize giving you a very level system.

Congrats on your weight loss beginnings and as your doc mentioned sleep apnea and many other medical conditions improve as we lose weight eating our Atkins and doing the mandatory exercise part of our Atkins too.

            Re: Hypoglycemia help

Wow! I felt like I was back in biology 101 there for a minute--hahaha

That actually makes a ton of sense. I haven't felt the horrible headaches or terrible hunger since starting on Atkins. It seems like the exhaustion is starting to wane away too. I am feeling more alert and ready to attack the day.

It's funny how, before my sugar levels used to peak at about 120 and I felt terrible. I mean, pass out on the couch horrible. And now, my sugar hardly ever gets above 80 and I am feeling better than ever.

I never would have guessed that this could be happening to me in such a short span of time--to go from comatose on the couch most of the day to being awake and energetic for my kids. It's all a little surreal and strange, but I'm sure I'll get used to all these new feelings soon.

It's almost akin to being heavely drugged for a good portion of your life and then you stop taking the sedatives and you discover there is a whole world beyond the bed you were sleeping in. It's scary at first, but then--slowly--you begin to enjoy it and then you start to worry that you will fall back to sleep and miss out on what you have discovered.

Ok, enough analogies from me, hahaha. Once I get going, I don't stop! See what happens when you remind me of college.

oh you will get used to my 2BIG brain leaks as that is my favorite thing to do on ADBB just let me know if it looks PhD level and I will try to explain it better.

it is a marvelous thing the human body. one thing you are going to have to watch is if you over indulge in protein the excess in the body is turned to sugar and that will restart your drugged state sysmptoms. you will have to see for yourself what protein level is best for you. 30% is the ball parrk Atkins figure based on the DUke study number Dr Atkins provided and anayling the Atkins sample menues. fats for induction are 65% but you might have to eat your Atkins higher fat. we slowly lower it as we add back our carbs in OWL until it is around 60% and finally at maintnenance we are around 50% fats. the protein level should remain the same. some folk with very low carb tolerances eat OWL ratios in maintnenace.

              Happy low carbing.
