Although I haven't seen the Dr. about it yet, I just got my blood work results.

Most everything was within normal range except for triglycerides:

    Cholesterol, Total 117
    Triglycerides 152
    HDL, Cholesterol 46
    LDL, Cholesterol 41

    AND AIC - 5.7

ah Coop What are the units for those numbers?

they are not the standard US ones unless they accidently mixed up your TG and your LDLs

Congrats on the great blood sugar controls!!!!

        2big,

Sorry about getting back to you on this one. Just went to Dr. last night for follow-up on the blood work. He was very pleased.

        The units are: mg/dL

        Cholesterol, Total 117 Ref. Interval 100 - 199
        Triglycerides 152 Ref. Interval 0 - 149
        HDL, Cholesterol 46 Ref. Interval 40 - 59
        LDL, Cholesterol 41 Ref. Interval 0 - 99

NOTE: Last year my Glucose, Serum reading was around 190. This time it was 101 (mg/dL) Ref. Interval - 65-99. Although it's not quite in the normal or acceptable range, he was pleased with the drop.

            Well, let's see ensive

I'm taking Zocor, Zetia, Ecotrin (I don't tolerate regular aspirin that well), and 800 micrograms of folic acid.

As I've noted before, in this forum, my maternal grandfather was a diabetic.

My three other grandparents all had various heart problems.

Ergo, since there is a prevalence of heart problems in my family, my Dr. wants me to continue on the above for the time being.

Although, I'm not a big fan of taking so much medications, I'd rather take them, than "live" with high cholesteral.

BTW, in August, 2003, a month before I was officially diagnosed as a diabetic, my overall cholesterol was 266.

And I was just checking some past results:

            February, 2004
            Total Cholesterol - 161
            HDL - 57
            LDL - 89

            May, 2004
            Total Cholesterol - 135
            HDL - 52
            LDL - 69

            August, 2004
            Total Cholesterol - 125
            HDL - 46
            LDL - 56

Coop, great job keeping those numbers moving in the right direction! I agree with you, while you aren't excited about taking all those meds- sometimes it beats the alternative! It is people like you who keep me so excited about Atkins- I tell everyone I know who is having trouble with their cholesterol to check out this board and see for themselves and not listen to all the media reports who don't know what they are talking about!

okay, the zocor explains that very very low LDL

:sadblinky :sadblinky I was hoping it was somethiung you were eating Atkins that I wasn't and I was going to move my LDL down like that too LOL

I'm a biggie on preventative medicine and statins are great for diabetic hearts too even those with normal Cholesterol numbers.

Wow those are great numbers. I'm envious of your A1C. I would love to have a reading under 6.0. Good work.

2big I'm with you the numbers seem backwards.

the tryglycerides are way too high & the LDL super low
If you're doing atkins the tryglycerides are usually the 1st to go down
Mine are usually below my HDL these days

But the LDL number is one I would love to hit someday
I try to take one day at a time but sometimes several days attack me at once

According to metric calculations, which is all I know, coop your trig are excellent!!
152/88.57 is the formula and comes out to 1.72 and norm for over 30 is anything under 2.30.....so don’t know 2 big and shawnee what you are referring too, when you say there is an error????Did I miss something, please explain. I thought these numbers were awesome and so am confused or not following your concerns.
See with coops extra low A1C she would also have lower trig and ldl as that all contributes to it too, 'xplain please what you are referring too. :wave
coop I noticed your value system put up is different range than we use too. So I am using the value system we use as I converted your numbers, zocor will drop LDL as for diabetics that is the one area the ldl stays hi as often genetic along with diabetic gene and only goes down by drugs when a genetic flaw so doubt greatly any diabetic could ever get it that low without a statin.
All latest research shows using statin for diabetics even in excellent control with non diabetic A1c under 6.1 adds yrs to your life as helps heart health and ldl in diabetic is typically the small sticky particles.
coop might want to ask doc to do a c reactive protein as it is being touted the best indicator of heart disease and diabetics often have an inflammation in arteries and this would indicate it , doubt it though as zocor would also treat this underlying inflammation.
Only 50% of heart attacks have hi chol, rest are low or norm but just about all have some inflammatory disease of arteries so only way to know is c reactive protein and this is a big issue for diabetics. The face of it all is changing as they come together with the art and the science of medicine. The recognition that chol isn’t what it is all cracked up to be but the sticky versus fluffy and the inflammation versus the smooth arteries is now being discovered as the real culprit.

Coops ratio is 117 total cholesterol/ 46 HDL and is a very healthy 2.54 3-5 is the target for healthy Adults using the measuring system Coops tests are in. As I said in the later post I was just shockede her LDL was so low We don't have a triglyceride to ( HDL + LDL) ratio

Coops triglycerides are high even for a normal person and that is out of whack for an Atkins low carber was what Shawnee and I were noting. Usually Atkineers have low triglycerides down in the single digits and LDL up where Coops TG number was if they have LDL issues. Coops very very low LDL is from her eating and her statin drugs as she posted later in her topic.

Coop muct be one of those with genetics that makes them high. I know a low carber on fishoil and meds out the wazoo and her TG was 400 afer a yr down from 700 but still way too high for health.

for metric you convert using this formula Canuck.
To convert a cholesterol level from milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) to international units (IU), multiply the mg/dL cholesterol level by 0.0259 millimoles per liter (mmol/L). For example, a cholesterol level of 200 mg/dL is equal to a cholesterol level of 5.18 IU
