I've been walking on a treadmill for about 8 weeks now, gradually adding time and speed. I'm now up to 1 hr at 2.6 mph and my ankles have started swelling with only slight aching. This morning I could hardly get my tennis shoes on. I don't have any kind of heart disease of congestive heart failure or anything like that. Is this commonly seen? The only time my ankles swell is when I'm retaining fluid and I don't seem to be having fluid retention symptoms anywhere else so I don't think it is that. Do you think it could be the walking at the faster rate of speed. I just went to the 2.6 a couple of days ago and went from 45 min to 60 min a few days before that. I've been trying to get my heart rate up in the range of the fat burning range of 119-137 and to do this I've had to pick up my speed from 2.0 up to 2.6 mph. I hope this all makes sense. What do ya'll think? I'm drinking plenty of water and having no added salt to any of my foods; really no salty foods at all.

Re: Swelling ankles
So you went from 2 mph in 45 mins (1.5 miles)
To 2.6 mph in 60 mins (2.6 miles)
That's over a mile more, or suddenly 66% more distance.
They say you should only raise your weekly mileage by 10%...and only when you get comfortable at the current mileage.
You're doing too much too fast.
I would immediately drop your mileage back to only 2 miles and then figure out what pace/time you want to do that in.
Do that for a week. If that feels OK and your ankles are better then go for 2.25 miles for another week, then 2.5 for another week etc as long as you feel good. You can vary the speed if you want but be consistent with the distance.
