Fat burning just moves them to ketones and ships them to other not being used as vigorously muscles for fuel. (The exception to this is the heart which loves ketones as fuel even when it is working super hard.)

Your chest muscles will get stronger too as part of your training and you will be able to more forcefully expel the spent air which will get more out of there allowing more fresh stuff to enter. We don't always get all the old air out when we exhale and you can prove this to yourself by sitting here and taking a normal breath and exhale. now try to exhale more air. surprize there was still some in there wasn't there? so as your train you get better at getting more of that old used up air out and allowing more fresh oxyenated air to enter.

Contracting your thigh muscle in a few weeks will generate much more force then it does right now and you will not need so much fuel to do the same stuff too.

Also as muscle learn they have a certain required work load they store more fuels inside themselves to preform those actions with. This too will asssit your efforts. In a few weeks you will be amazed that you were posting about only going 51 min for the 5K walking I went from stuggling 2mph walking when I started out to over 7MPH on the inclines in less then a yr. I can now walk a 5K in close to 30 min.

    Happy low carbing
Wow. You sure know a lot about this stuff 2big. Thanks.

Yes its much harder running on the road compared to a treadmill!!! You go a lot slower because your feet arent being pulled back. The treadmill I run on at the gym has a setting where the incline rises and lowers, so I have it set to go from 1.0 to 2.5 and back again. The 10k iam doing next month will be mostly run on grass which will be a different exepreince again...

Oh, good points. So the time I can achieve on a treadmill may not be the same time I can achieve running outdoors then, right? I have to start somewhere so I'm starting on the treadmill and working up from there. It's way too hot to be running outside right now. I would pass out.
Absolutely, your results on a treadmill versus running outdoors will vary greatly. If you can't handle the heat of running outdoors, then running on a treadmill is a good start. Personally, I would suggest running outdoors for shorter distances/length of time, just to get conditioned for running outdoors. I started my outdoor running in the 'cool months' here in SW Florida, so I could get conditioned for those dog MONTHS of summer. Now, I have no problem running 2 and a half hours in the August sun. Its all a matter of adjusting. Listen to your body and do what you can. Sooner or later you will fall in love with running outdoors. There is NOTHING ELSE LIKE IT.

I like TTDRIVERS comment - of "Finishing is Winning".

Never a truer word spoken. At the end of the day you are competing against yourself.

The last 5 k race I entered was won by the person who finished 3rd in the whole UK championship race type thing a couple of months before. 3rd in the whole of the UK!!!! There was no chance of any one beating him on the night. (unless of course the UK champion entered LOL

I always enter these races with the target of not finishing last. As long as I do that I am happy.

I was reading in a running magazine the other day about the differences between running indoors and out and there was one factor that I never even considered. The author of the article said that wind resistence is probably the biggest factor. I never would have thought of that! I mean, terrain, hills and weather for sure. He suggests that only to account for wind resistence one should set the incline to 1.5% minimally. Adjust further for hill training etc. Cool, eh?

Re: 3.2 mile walk on treadmil in 51.28 minutes

Someone already mentioned this, but if you're not running/walking on an incline, start today.

I only walk 3 miles an hour, but I do it on an incline of 2 (right now, I'll add as time goes by). This burns more calories and makes running on a flat surface a LOT easier when the time comes... and should you encounter a hill? No problemo... incline training!

My best time is now 45 minutes on a treadmill. Still not the greatest but I'm getting there.

if you really want to increase your speed try doing it alternating the incline up the incline down and use the same speed. Use the incline up about 5 anf go for a min your tongue should be hanging out and you should be huffing and puffing. Then lower the treadmill and recover on your flat speed for about a min then jack it back up for another min. Alternate like that for 20 mins of your time every other day and in 2 weeks you will be amazed at how much fat you have lost and how much faster you can go on the flat. Then you have to increase the speed by about 1/2 MPH every 2 weeks and soon you will have a great time for a 5K, lots of inches lost and some great leg muscles too. The alternating is called HIIT for high intensity interval training.

But what if my tongue is already hanging out and I'm hugging and puffing without the incline?

then you need to get in better shape and slow the treadmill a bit during your recovery minute so that tongue gets back in your mouth and your heart beat gets back in the fat burning range for you. you want max rate at end of incline time and back to slower rate at end of recovery time. you will be amazed at how fast you get better conditioned doing that.

O Hold on while you lower the treadmill so you don't fall off during the change.

Yep they say I crack a mean exercise whip!

I'm going to give it a try 2big. Sounds like a great plan. I'll try it tonight.

Have I told you lately that you're just full of it? Information that is.
