I am sure I'm the last person left in the world who actively sought out to purchase a rowing machine recently for exercise and toning.
I had a really difficult time even tracking down rowing machines, let alone finding any resources which would help me in my purchase of one.
Here are some of the reasons rowing is an outstanding exercise for someone who might have otherwise not considered trying this venerable exercise.
1. Rowing is for any level of fitness training. Whether you're 11 years old, like my younger son, or 36 like my husband, rowing is something that suits all ages, fitness levels and abilities.
2. Wide range of motion tones more of your body. You work many parts of your body, including your calves, your abs and your back. It's a win-win-win situation.
3. Good calorie burn for the work input. Granted, weight doesn't matter with rowing machines, so your caloric burn will be pretty much the same regardless of weight; still, at 200 calories a pop per 30 minute row on a stroke level of 25 rpm, that's not a bad amount of burn for the work!
4. It's not tough on your joints. Some say it can be a bit rough on the knees st first, but in not over-bending, you'll find that form comes pretty naturally. If you are very overweight you might find that while walking can jar, the seated position of the row will be less detrimental to those joints, especially starting out in your workout routine.
5. If you lift weights, what an excellent way to warm up your arms and your abs beforehand. Rowing for 20 minutes gets those areas of your body ready to go!
6. Versatility. It gives you strength conditioning as well as aerobic training.
If you have one of these at the gym, make sure you check it out! I use mine regularly, love watching tv while rowing, and enjoy the full range of fluid motion it affords for so little impact.
I've been rowing and it's been a really good workout. My back muscles are definitely strengthening, along with the forearms, shoulders, calves and abs! It's a machine to check out, especially if there's one sitting lonely in the gym!
