Here, you can sign up for a triathlon as a TEAM .. i.e. one person runs, one swims, one rides .. so you need not be tops in every event yourself .. not sure if it works that way other places, though ..

I didn't know that. I'll have to check into it.

In short, no. The awesome thing about participating in multisport is that it is SUCH a supportive environment. Seriously, there are people of all ages, shapes and sizes entering. There are also different levels. For instance, my first tri this year will be a 'try a tri'. It's only a 400m swim, 10K cycle and 3K run!!! The next level which I'll do later in the summer is a 'sprint'. It's a 750m swim, 20K cycle, 5K run. Olympic distance tri's are 1.5 km swim, 40K cycle, 10K run. Then there's the ultimate 'iron man' distance which is about a 5k swim, 250Km cycle followed by a full marathon. Certainly not for everybody.

99% of the people participating are doing it for themselves. The goal is to finish. Like I said, it's a very fun and supportive environment. Oh, about the swim. Everybody gets very concerned about the swim. You don't have to do an all out front crawl for the entire distance. You can do any stroke you want. You can change strokes. My husband did the back stroke and sidestroke for the entire swim! In fact, you need to pace yourself and not go all out in the swim. Swimming takes a lot out of you and you need some gas in the tank for the run at the end.

Maybe we should start a multisport thread!!!

I've seen some events that offer that option. Like relay marathon running too.

Oh wow. That's good to know. I always thought that you had to be really good in all three events. I wouldn't have any problems with the swimming part 'cause I used to swim
competitively. And I've done a lot of biking. I just need to work on my running and then I should be ok. Starting a multisport thread is a good idea. Maybe there are a lot of others doing triathlons.

Re: What/who Inspired You To Start Running?

Hello all I've been trying to become a runner but I'm not exactly sure why, I like to workout hard for a shorter period of time like on my lunch break at work I've been running 25 minutes and get 2 miles done and thats a lot more than if I was walking. I would like to to run a 5K soon just to show to me I can. Last time on Atkins I walked 2 miles about 4 times a week outside in hilly terrain. This time I am on treadmill 90% of the time at least until it gets warmer. It just seems that I was never good at running and always quit so this time I wanted to suceed and to run for miles out on the roads around here like I see people doing. I started by doing the couch to 5K program...I have run for 26 minutes after a 4 min walk warm up...once so far...but I'm still working

A triathalon sounds so cool I am a really good swimmer, I used to swim in middle and high school.
                Restarting again 193/174/130

Re: What/who Inspired You To Start Running?

For me, it had everything to do with being in the Guard again and being not the slow guy in the unit. I wasn't going to sign the line if I could not pass the test. As for why I continue running longer and longer distances that has more to do proving how far I am from my old self and my lazy self. Why do I say lazy? Running represents the easiest way with current equipment to burn an adequate number of Calories in the quickest amount of time.
