  • Running question.

I've noticed lately running seems to be taking it's toll on my knees and back, I run on concrete, though not many miles a week (15-20), but it still seems to be causing me issues.

I bought gel insoles for my shoes yesterday and am buying some new shoes on the weekend.

Just wondering if anyone else has this issue, and if you have any suggestions for good shoes or insoles for shock absorbtion? I've worn Asics Gels in the past and I liked them..my shoes now are Nike and i'm not really happy with them.

    Re: Running question.

    Hi Sadie147,

You guys are such an inspiration and I have recently started running (because of this forum) again after a ski accident a number of years ago and gaining a lot of weight, so far no problems. However, I used to run before the accident 5-10 kms per day for years and when I ran on cement or asphalt and I also found that I had issues with my back and knees. You may want to give your back and knees a break and try keeping off the hard surfaces. I know it can be difficult to find a good track, but I found even running sometimes on a treadmill can help, as the impact is lower.

On the other hand, (not plugging here mind you) I also found arfter much trial and error that Asics were the best runners for me. When I tried other runners I also had back and knee issues.

    Hey, happy running!

      Hi Sadie!

Definitely shoes make all the difference.

I had a serious run-in (pardon the pun) with runner's knee shortly after I started running serious miles (15 a week) ... all caused by wearing the wrong worn out shoes.

I can't wear Nikes at all because for my skinny bony foot, they simply do not have enough cushion. I can't do Asics either. The *only* shoes that my feet love are New Balance, specifically 1221s. They have great cushioning and shock absorption (a NECESSITY for running on concrete!) and they wear well. I average around 30-35 miles every week, and I replace them when I hit 300 miles. I only wear them for running .. nothing else. Once they reach their 300 miles, I wear them for walking, but not for running.

I haven't had any knee problems whatsoever since I've stayed with this plan. I get my 1221s at www.onlineshoes.com. No tax and no shipping and they have good sales from time to time. I suggest you go to a running store, get fitted in a shoe you like, then check them out online to save some money.

      HTH!

PS .. I am wearing my 1221s in this pic!

        Re: Running question.

Thanks both for your recommendations...I was fitted for my Asics last year at a running store, I did like them..and was sorry I didn't go with them again. Silly me bought nike's cause they were onsale (and really should have ordered a size bigger). Saving $20 so was not worth it.

Rosecat, I do sometimes run on the wood boardwalk at our beach here..and i find that's a great surface to run on..unfortunately due to time issues that's only about once every two weeks . As much as I hate running on a treadmill, that's most likely where i'll end up doing alot of my running in the winter as it gets too cold and slippery here. My main reason for running outdoors is my dog..he needs a good 2-3 miles a day . Actually he could go alot farther if i let him LOL.

Betty I will try the NB as well, I have heard alot of good things about them too. though i'm the opposite of you..i've got fat, wide feet LOL. Though I know alot of brands now come in wide widths. I'm also going to check out that site once I price them! We don't have alot of running stores here to choose from, so they can be a bit pricey.

I think my Nike's are definately going to have to be retired as strictly walking shoes.

          Re: Running question.

Yep, I have fat wide feet and the Asics seem to accommodate this feature of my body. Like Betty said, I change mine every 300-350 miles as I find I start to get back and knee issues after this.

Yep, it off to the treadmill in winter here too. Gosh, I like it when you can run outside and the weather is good.

So happy running, you guys have really motivated me to get seriously back into this!
