  • Dangers of running: Cars

Well it finally happened. I refuse to run on sidewalks and turn an ankle, so I guess I accept some inherent risks. But even so, I never actually though it would happen. So there I was running along, totally lost in my thoughts, when wham! A guy clips me with his mirror doing 35mph. The poor lady behind him. She was in shock (think she thought he was gonna kill me), she said he went right at me. Four cars pulled over, including the idiot who hit me. He gets out of his car clueless and says, "what did I hit?" I'm like " are you kidding, you hit me". "Oh, are you alright?" I didn't know how to feel, angry or lucky. The lady behind him asked if I wanted her number or have her call the police. I said I was fine, gave the guy a dirty look and finished my run. He had no idea that he had even hit me! I still can't believe that. I may be sore later, but I'm fine now, and I complain about our litigous society all the time, so what am I gonna do? sue him? no. So he got lucky and maybe he'll pay more attention, probably not, seeing he's clueless. Besides I think I broke his mirror.

I find it hard to believe that he didnt realise that he had hit you. At 35mph you always can tell if you clip something with your side mirrors.

I'm glad you are safe and not hurt Jim.

OMG Jim how awful! But glad to hear you are ok. I can't run on the road as i run with my dog, but several times we've nearly been hit by people backing down their driveways. I can't believe how fast people will come flying down a driveway without looking...

Oh wow that is horrible. I urge you in the future to please at least get the guys information and license plate number. I realize that you may feel like you were not seriously hurt at the time but when something like that happens and you get that adrenaline coursing through you may not truly realize the damage. At least having that info can help you find the guy again just in case.

Man that is so scary, glad you are OK.

Hopefully you will not discover later on that you in fact did sustain an injury, because unless you report the accident, you will have no way to claim damages later on.

An old friend of mine dismissed an injury to his back from a demolition ball on the job because he felt only bruised afterwards. 2 years later, he was totally disabled with a degenerated disk due to the impact on his back. He got nothing.

OMG JIM!!! I am so sorry that happened, and SO VERY RELIEVED YOU LIVED TO TELL THE STORY!! My gawd ... talk about STUPID people behind the wheel .. ugh .. they never CEASE to amaze me ...

Here, I worry just running on the sidewalks, let alone the streets. Tampa is #1 in the country at killing pedestrians and that's a title well-earned .. I'd love to run in the streets and the vultures would love it if I did .... I'd be their lunch.

SO GLAD YOU ARE ALL RIGHT!

glad you're okay Jim. I'm not litigious either, however, I think I'd have taken his information and made him SWEAT IT for a good long time so he'd pay more attention.

Thanks everyone, I seriously thought about calling the police and getting all the info. But I came up with every excuse not to. And I'm still fine 8 hours later. But next time I will because you never know. Although I do hope that there is no next time.
