  • the trainer at my gym...

Ok - so i've been going to gyms now on and off for about 5 years...I haven't hit the gym recently, however, since the end of August. In September / October my fiance and I were buy finding / closing on our first home.

Anyways - when we moved, I signed up for the new gym about 5 minutes from our house. Since I signed up (November 1) I've only been like once (until yesterday)...and now that I'm starting a new eating plan and am committing myself to get healthy again, I wanted to take advantage of their free training session.

So I sat down with one of their trainers for a quick 2 minute session last night to set up a time this week (thursday night) so I could come in and do their free analysis and training session. He started asking me questions and telling me what we'll be going over and I told him flat out, "well, I am doing atkins." and he looked absolutely appaled!!!! But then I felt I needed to quickly justify by saying my doctor told me to do atkins (which she did - a year ago, lol and i'm just NOW listening to her). And he was like "WHAT?! You're DOCTOR told you to do atkins?" and then - again to justify more I told him, "well, I have Insulin Resistance" and he was like, "oh, well I guess that makes sense".

Um gee thanks! We'll see how thursday goes - it IS a "free" session after all - but seriously - all I'm asking from him is EXERCISE advice NOT nutrition advice.

I can say - I truly do understand why people are against this eating plan - as I myself was always against it until my doc was the one who really told me to do it (and, again it took me over a year to listen to her!)

But now that I'm on the "other side" it really is annoying to be looked at like I'm doing something wrong. I know I'm not and I'm very excited about finally changing TO low carb (again a year and 3 doctor's appointments later with my doc telling me to! haha).
But part of me almost wanted to go find another trainer after that...course everyone else there probably has the same mindset...

Oh well. I just needed to talk.

Has anyone else had this type of experience?

Yup that is familiar. I have not really discussed my eating habits at the gym but I know that they really believe in the absolute necessity of using carbohydrates so Atkins (which they erroneously believe are no carbohydrates) is like the enemy. However, I know I can do hours of exercise on my morning breakfast so I don't worry about it.

remember, this person is a trainer at a gym, not a trained professional. There are several "certifications" you can get to be a trainer that involve sending money to an address and them mailing you a certificate.

So, take their advice with a grain of salt.

Re: the trainer at my gym...

some trainers come a bit too condescending...like chef kevin said, most of them are certified through the mail. i too have insulin resistance (PCOS) and my doctor highly suggested a low carb lifestyle. A lot of people have the misconception that Atkins is just "cutting carbs forever", many have not even read the book, so when I hear negative comments from peers regarding my decision, it kind of irritates me..grrr..

Wait a minute.......screw the whole "he's not a nutritionist" thing. What he is is a person whose professional services you are paying for. That means he works for you. That also means you have to be assertive when/if he starts going in directions you don't want to go.

"Excuse me. While I can appreciate your perspective, frankly, I'm not interested in it. What I hired you for is to help me design a workout routine for me and teach me good form. If/when I want nutritional advice, I'll let you know. "

If he does it again, get a new trainer. I promise you, he'll learn quickly that when the next client tells him what they want from him, he should probably listen.

Like chef Kevin said - I need to just take it with a grain of salt...I've been reading the book more and more as well as listening to all the downloaded podcasts of Jimmy Moore (livin' la vida lowcarb) from iTunes - and I'll be the first to admit that it's seriously opened up my eyes as to what a low-carb lifestyle really is about AND how HEALTHY it really is! I guess what I have to remind myself is that this trainer has been trained to think that carbs=good=energy and high fat=bad (again, I understand as I USED to have that mentalitiy myself)...and what i have to seriously remember is the fact that he just isn't educated enough in information ABOUT low-carb lifestlyes and he just is ignorant of the fact that it IS healthy way of life.

I'm definitely a convert myself now - KNOWING that it IS healthy...not just grouping everything I've ever 'heard' from 'them' about how 'bad' low-carbing is - but how it really is a GREAT way to eat. I know now, I'd MUCH rather eat NATURAL fat than CHEMICAL sugar!

btw - i just wanted to thank you all so much for the support I've found on these boards the last few days. I've been on other boards for other diet plans and I've never felt as much support there as I do here. Thank you!!!

Re: the trainer at my gym...

Oh yeah, I had this problem. I finally got a new trainer who isn't happy with my Atkins, but he is more understanding than the other one.

He just says my body will start using protein from my muscles to fuel my workouts. This has me a little worried. So I am trying to figure out what to do (I am on rung 1, so only 25 carbs a day).

Re: the trainer at my gym...

                  Hi Keriann --
Remember also, a lot (if not most) gyms have nutrition items they want to sell you -- if you are using Atkins as your plan.....they know they can't sell you anything....so you have to understand the bad taste he may show for you is actually what he feels as money flying out of his pocket. If he had his high and mighty attitude with him the next time you're at the gym, I'd ask management for a new trainer, if they refuse, ask for your money back and find a new gym. We have enough daily struggles without additude laden people who aren't any better than you.

My mother gave me some wise words I carry with me everyday....they might help you also. "You are not better than anyone and NO ONE is better than you. Treat everyone as you want to be treated and hold your head up high".

One day the nay-sayers will understand that WE were the revolutionaries because we found and believed in Atkins when they were so busy going with the latest fad diets!

Re: the trainer at my gym...

well, after i met with him for the "free" session - i found out how much it'd be for full training sessions - and it was basically like 2grand. i told him i had a wedding to pay for and i couldn't do it.
so i'm doing it on my own. i'd LOVE to actually HAVE a trainer - but not for $2000 when we just bought a house and we're saving for a wedding.

plus - i can't work with someone like him anyways. he's an ****.
