    Re: Here I go.........

I applaud you!!!! good luck with this for sure!!! I quit 20 years ago when my brother gave up drugs and became sober I quit smoking ..and I am still smoke free..(except when I have a tantrum but that is fuming not smoking) .there are phantom cravings now and then ..but one thing ...every day goes buy if you smoke or don't smoke ..so on the worst days remember that....time passes ...with or with out a cigarette in your hand....and you have more time with out one

congratulations on your choice to stop!!! OOOOXXXX just means we all get to love you longer!!!

      Re: Here I go.........

I'm sure there is a mourning period for smokers. When I first quit, I'd watch others smoke and wish I was with them. Now, I look at them and say a silent prayer that they will be able to kick their habit as I did. I truely believe it is a frame of mind. Just like doing Atkins, once you committ to it and train your mind to believe in what you are doing, it becomes easier. When you fight it -- it is harder to commit to. YOU CAN DO THIS. Every hour you go without a cig your body is getting stronger and your craving gets smaller.

no 2 big. GAWD...... I hate typing this. I am still a smoker. AND........ I am using every excuse in the world. But, I started back reading Allen Carr last night and will get after it tonight too. I would like to tell everyone here to go jump in a lake and let me get on with it. But, I know I am using that as an excuse also. I am getting very very angry with myself.
GEE........ I am a WHIMP! ok, I am SCARED! I feel like I am losing my best friend. HOW STUPID IS THAT! STUPID! STUPID! STUPID!

              Re: Here I go.........

Make a list of all the reasons you want to quit and all the reasons you don't and then weight them from 1-100 in imoportance to you. you can use a number more then once. when you get done add them up and see which list is bigger if it is the quitting list then you are ready and can go forward. if the keep smoking list is bigger then don't quit just practice smoking harn control by smoking less ciggys each time you do smoke and whn you are ready quit.

Now if you are ready and need some added help to motivate you....

why don't you challenge DH you quit smoking while he controls his Blood sugar!

you do know your smoking around him is bad for him right so do it for his health too. We know how important he is to you so that should give you some added motivation.

remember too the physical addiciton will be gone in just 2-3 days and then it is mental all the way. Be strong you can do it. You gave up your sugar addiction.

what can you dio with all the money you are saving from not smoking?????? another champagne limo ride? in your sex clothes?

                Re: Here I go.........

                Hi Bren,

In January I quit for the 3rd time in 3 years. I used patches. By the third week I ended up going a whole weekend without a patch and by the time I realized it I figured it would be stupid to stick a patch back on at that point. I haven't spent time at the cottage with all our friends yet this year, though, so that will be the real test. I don't feel like I ever want to smoke again though. As much as I loved it. And I did love it. I loved it more than anything. It helped me calm down and made me feel better. It only added to the fun at parties. It kept boredom at bay and was a good way to kill time while waiting. Finally though, pressure from my kids and society made me figure it was time to quit. It's nice not having people glare at me because I'm sitting beside them somewhere reeking of smoke. I'm happy not to spend all my money on gum and breath mints so I don't kill people with my breath. I really do feel a lot better and I'm looking forward to being able to win the "hold your breath under water longest" contests that the kids want to have every year at the beach.

Yes, I believe there is a mourning period. Cigarettes were with me all day, every day for over 20 years. That's a strong attachment. I don't know if Elton John is still smoke free, but I recall reading something about him writing a "Dear John" letter to his ciggies saying that it was sad, but they must break up and not see each other anymore, it was a destructive relationship, yadda yadda. I didn't write a letter like that, but I did have a mental conversation with them (mental being the operative word?). It's only been 3 months this time around. I hope its the last time, but they say each time brings you closer to doing it forever. I can tell you though, that you really have to do it for yourself. And if you want it you can do it. You've succeeded at Atkins so I know you have it in you to do it. Good luck Bren!

                  Re: Here I go.........

Bren, feeling like you are losing a friend in the cigs is not strange at all. When I sobered up (rehab) I had to write a goodbye letter to my favorite alcohol bev. Of course my letter started Dear Jack. but it was a very hard letter to write becaue I had to state what Jack had done for me, how my life would be better without Jack. etc.. You get the picture.

                  You can do this !!!

                    Hey Bren Bren:

Stopped by to bust your butt... I found an old topic of yours :

                    1/1/04 - QUIT SMOKING CHALLENGE ( 1 2 3 ... Last Page )

                    Bren

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok after 2 years of writing about it, lets quit already..........

Previously on here I quit for over a year but I starting smoking again last year when I got deployed. I got an PM last week here from Bren who of course talked me into quiting again. I havent had a cigarette in 5 days now and I'm gonna come up there and kick Bren's butt if she dont quit now...

                      Re: Here I go.........

I found this as part of the thread we posted 2 years ago and still find it interesting:

                      At 20 minutes after quitting:

                      blood pressure decreases
                      pulse rate drops
body temperature of hands and feet increases

                      At 8 hours:

carbon monoxide level in blood drops to normal
oxygen level in blood increases to normal

                      At 24 hours:

chance of a heart attack decreases

                      At 48 hours:

                      nerve endings start regrowing
ability to smell and taste is enhanced

                      The first year after quitting:

At 2 weeks to 3 months:

                      circulation improves
                      walking becomes easier
                      lung function increases

                      1 to 9 months:

coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue, shortness of breath decreases

                      1 year:

excess risk of coronary heart disease is decreased to half that of a smoker

                      Long-term Benefits of Quitting

                      At 5 years:

from 5 to 15 years after quitting, stroke risk is reduced to that of people who have never smoked.

                      At 10 years:

risk of lung cancer drops to as little as one-half that of continuing smokers

risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas decreases
                      risk of ulcer decreases

                      At 15 years:
risk of coronary heart disease is now similar to that of people who have never smoked
risk of death returns to nearly the level of people who have never smoked
