  • Question about Ingredients

I stopped taking my last calcium vitamin 'cause I found it had corn oil in it. But looking at my new one I'm kind of worried, there are ingredients that end in lose.

Croscarmellose Sodium , Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose , Sodium Lauryl Sulfate , Titaniuim Dioxide , Magnesium Stearate , Polyethylene Glycol , Carnauba Wax , Annatto Color , Carmine Color

And then I was looking about my B-Complex and more loses.

Cellulose Plant Origin , Dicalcium Phosphate , Hydroxy Methylcellulose , Vegetable Stearic Acid , Silica , Cellulose Coating , Vegetable Magnesium Stearate , Mannitol

I looked at all the vitamins at Walgreens and they all have loses in them. Has anyone found vitamins to be a stall because they have carbs in them? Where can you go to find vitamins without them?

Or, am I just over-reacting since I found corn oil in my calcium and what I have is fine.

I'm so grateful to have this place to come and ask questions, thanks everyone. I've lurked in the vitamin section for awhile now, I loved the pieces on vitamin B's.

        Re: Question about Ingredients

        Hello there, you Firefly fan!

I can see why folks get jittery wise all those -ose words because as a general rule, they tend to be detrimental to low-carbers. However, not all -ose words need be avoided.

For example, all the -ose words you've listed are just fine to consume as far as this WOE is concerned. All are insoluble and go through your body without raising insulin levels. You can equate these items to what you would normally think of as fiber: skins of fruit & veggies, and so forth. Many of these items are found in pharmaceutical drugs as well as supplements and food items, too.

Now that's not to say that all vitamins don't have sugar in them because some of them actually do to help cover the taste. Think of Flintstone vitamins...pretty yummy if you're a kid. So certainly not consuming vitamins of this sort is ideal.

However, you may find a supplement that you really like and it may have a small amount of carbs in it. As long as you keep track of your total net carbs from all sources (food, drink, vitamins, etc) and stay within your limit, you should be just fine. If, however, you stall, then you'll have to take a critical look at your food log and see what the problem is. It may be caused by something else and not necessarily by your supplement. You would then have to do the eliminate game and see which item or items are the culprit.

By the way, what's your beef about corn oil?

Let me know if you need further clarification. Oh, and thanks about the kudos on my vitamin B threads.

Well, as a general rule, calcium supplements EASES water retention, i.e. if you're bloated, it helps you get "leaky." It's really helpful for those that suffer from bloating during PMS and the rest of us during normal times.

If you are suffering from water retention, I would look at other items that you may be taking. -OR- it may be possible (maybe) that there's some bizzaro ingredient in said calcium supplement that's the culprit (but highly unlikely!).

I was looking at them, and saw all the sugar and almost dropped the bottle, "they call this healthy!?"

i was reaching and hoping. it's just another thing, now confirmed, that isn't causing my bloating. it's the only thing i've added lately.
i'm becoming increasing more confident this is being caused by my hormonal problems with estrogen. oh hum.....

What a great way of thinking about the different shapes and sizes of beautiful! (I still haven't forgiven FOX for cancelling that show...maybe someone will make another movie...)

Well, corn as food isn't favored in the low carb lifestyle until you hit a certain rung. Since you're still in induction, yes, you need to stay away from corn because it's high in carbs -BUT- corn OIL has zero carbs, so feel free to use.

Glad to make another convert!!! I can always tell when I miss a dose of vitamin B so I'm not at the point where I just don't forget and don't run out.

So you didn't try out any new foods, condiments, drinks, or so forth? Just the calcium?? If so, I'd blame mother nature and the changes she's doing to your body.
