  • First time on the 50+

Hi. I'm Jill and I'll be 54 in February. I started transitioning into Atkins on 8/8 and I've finished Induction with a loss of 16-17 lbs, which makes 19-20 including the few I had lost before Atkins. I still have 107 to lose. I also have a prosthetic hip (thrown from a horse as a kid) so I can't do a lot of walking. About 1/2 hr at a little more than a stroll is about all I can do right now, although it is getting easier. I got fat, first with pregnancies, then ate my way through a divorce and couldn't get it off very easily because of addition to carbs and lack of mobility. However, other than late night snacking, I wasn't really eating a lot of white or processed foods. I love veggies, nuts, berries, grains, and didn't eat a bunch of junk -- except for my late night snack.

After 2+ weeks of Induction I feel way more in control than I did before Atkins. My appetite is much reduced and I don't feel frantic anymore if things get stressful and I can't reach the M & M's. Haven't even thought about them. woo hoo!!

Hi and welcome both to the 50ies board and to the forum. Great to have you and great weight loss. Exercise is important, do what you can and like Ferthebirds suggested, water exercise is good.

Thanks for all the nice replies. You sound like a friendly bunch!

I have thought of water exercize. It's somewhat expensive, though, and my doctor will order it as therapy, but the insurance won't pay for it. This month is tight, but maybe I can do it next month. I have contacted the local Y and they do have it near where I work.

            Stachad, are you near Louisville?

I just wanted to say "Welcome" to you. It's nice to have you at the ADBB and we're happy you joined our 50+ bunch.

Good luck to you and I hope the water exercise is something that works out for you. The "Y" is a great resource. I'm glad you found it.

Kentucky is a beautiful state. We've been through that way on occasion. I bet the "autumns" there are gorgeous.

First off, Welcome to ha and this WOL. You will greatly enjoy both.

Do you have a community pool near you that is open year round? If so, contact them to see if they offer classes (if that is what you are interested in).

When I first went to my doctor about my desire to lose weight I had the problem of having had orthoscopic (sp?) surgery on my knee a few months prior. I also had problems with my back. I was unable to stand or walk longer than 5-10 minutes at a time without having to sit down for 15-20 minutes until the pain subsided. When I asked my G.P. about exercises to help strengthen my back muscles, he sent me to a chiropractor. I was really skeptical as I did not believe in them. Everyone I ever knew who went to one had to keep going back because they required more and more adjustments. I even told Dr. Rudy, the chiropractor, this. He just laughed at me and told me that he would make me a believer. Dr. Rudy found out that I had one leg shorter than the other and that through the years I had twisted my spine, to compensate for the lean. While my upper spine was perfectly straight, the lower section started out angled to the right and then curved back to the left. Anyway, I walked on a cane from March 03 to July 03 (after a fall in January) until I had the surgery in July. Dr. Rudy stated that the combination of the twisting of my spine, limping and walking with the cane causes damage and scaring to the muscles in my lower back. He placed a lift in my shoe (which helped quite a bit).

(Phew, what a long winded story! I’m getting to the point, I promise!)

When I ask him about exercise to strengthen those damaged muscles, he absolutely vetoed any exercise outside of water (to begin with)! Other than normal *get from here to there* walking, no walking for exercise. He wouldn’t even let me participate in water aerobics for 6 months. He stated to just get in the water and walk or swim. Because of the buoyancy there is less impact on joints. (But, I’m sure you already knew that.) What I didn’t know was that, because of the resistance of the water as you walk through it, any walking in the water was 5 times greater. Supposedly, for every mile walked in the water, it equals to walking 5 miles on dry land! (More long winded info!)

The point is, even if you don’t want to take or can’t afford, water aerobic classes or therapy – jump into a pool and walk! I’m not sure how much improvement you would get in the movement of your hip, but it sure would help with all the other joints. And burn calories too!

It will be 1 year, next month, since I started this WOL. I have worked my way up to attending 4 water aerobics classes a week (6 when I don’t try to overdo it). I am allowed to ride my stationary bike, I can walk a mile in 15 minutes and just last week I joined a fitness center where I have done cardio/strength training for 1 ½ hours, 5 days out of the last 6. I even walk to work (3 blocks) in 5 minutes (when I'm not running behind).

For me, this has been a major feat as I was the fat kid, all through school, who couldn’t do all the things the other kids could do. I even flunked gym in school! I never took my kids to fairs, carnivals, theme parks, etc. because I just couldn’t walk that much!

Hang in there, you will discover what exercising you can accomplish. It just takes time to figure it out.

And now, this old windbag will sign off! LOL

Wow, Granny53. That's a lot of good info. I had no idea you were walking 5x what you would walk on land. I'll look into it some more.

Hi, Janice. I was born in Birmingham. I'm headed back to 'Bama to see my parents tomorrow. My family is all in 'Bama or Georgia, except my daughter, who is in California, and my daughter-in-law's family in Indy.

Jill, I'm in Montgomery. I go to B'ham sometimes but not on a regular basis. It's a little too big for me. Guess I'm glad I don't live in Atlanta either. lol Actually, I was born here and even though we have lived in other parts of the state after Jim and I married, we ended up back in Montgomery where we started. We just think of it as coming "full circle". lol

You have a safe trip down tomorrow because there will be a lot of traffic on the road. Don't go any further south until after Frances leaves. As of right now, it sounds like the weather experts aren't sure if "she" will go on up the east coast or cross Florida and head into Georgia. It will be interesting to see the exact path she takes. Just be careful!
