  • An update on my baby girl

Well Gabrielle has sepsis, which means the infection is in her blood as well. They haven't identified the organism yet, but it looks like it could be Strep B. It started in her urinary tract and traveled into her kideneys and blood. She''l be hospitalized for 7 days AFTER they get a negative blood culture. Which maybe today's will be negative or tomorrow's.

She might be able to move to a closer hospital (still in a NICU though) once all her cultures are negative and she is stable for a couple of days. So that will be much easier.

She is still a very sick little girl, but she looks so much better, she's plumping up (but not too much, no edema), her hands and feet are warm and pink (they were cold and purple), and she's breathing easier (yesterday she was struggling to breath). They shut off the heaters because she is now maintaining her own temperature, they are weaning her off the oxygen, and she ate twice last night and twice today so far, which she hadn't done in two days, so that's a very good sign.

She is still sleeping all the time but that's because she's still pretty sick, and probably exhausted from fighting all day yesterday. But she looks like one of my kids now and not all shrunken and listless.

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers, I know they are helping.
    Jim

Re: An update on my baby girl

Ack! I missed the original post too!

There is NOTHING scarier than having your baby be sick and not knowing what the outcome will be and how long it'll take. I can completely and totally empathize with you on that, and I'm so sorry for all of the stress, heartache, and worry I know you've all been going through with this.

Thank God she's on the mend! You know, a real common saying among hospital parents is, "God watches over babies and fools."

Thoughts and prayers for a super, ginormous speedy recovery and nothing but smooth sailing from here on out - for *all* of you.

                      ~Brook
