  • Memorable Thanksgiving Tales

I thought it would be fun to have a thread about memorable Thanksgivings that we've had.

    Here is mine:

We had been married two years, we were young, had a new baby and were stationed in W.Germany. My husband asked if I minded if he invited some of his guys over for Thanksgiving Dinner. This was to be my first time hosting such a big dinner.

The week of Thanksgiving, the baby was sick. I was up day and night with her...and wearing down. I was starting to catch a cold and felt like crap. My husband had to work Thanksgiving day and would come home about 2-3pm with the guys. (about 8 of them)

That morning, I got up early, put the Turkey in the oven. Later in the morning, I made the stuffing, green bean casserole and put the potatoes on to boil. The baby was crying and I was still in my pj's. It was getting late, but I thought I'd lay down with her for a minute and get her to sleep so I could finish the meal and get dressed.

Two hours later, I woke up to smoke. The turkey was burnt, the potatoes were out of water and stuck to the bottom of the pan and the green beans no longer resembled anything from this world. To top it off, the dog had eaten the two pumpkin pies I'd baked the night before. The baby started to cry. I cried. and then something happened....

The door opened and in walks my husband with the guys. The look on their faces was worth a million dollars. I cried harder. My husband took the baby and told me to go lay down. I took some medicine and fell asleep.

When I woke up a few hours later, my husband, the guys and the baby were all in the livingroom listening to music and laughing. They had cleaned up the mess and cooked hamburgers/corn/chips for dinner.

This could have been a disaster, but nobody ever teased me or said anything about it. When the guys left, they all thanked me for having them over. To me, thats the true spirit of Thanksgiving.

Awww, that brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for sharing. I don't think I have any really memorable stories to tell.

This year my stepson will be home. He is a Marine stationed in Okinawa, so we are really happy to have him home.

We always invite a bachelor over for dinner for Thanksgiving.

We've had quite a few who were from India, but we've had others who were American, too. It's just something we enjoy because we learn a lot about other cultures, and they're usually neat guys hubby knows from work. It's always a relaxing day, and I have no issues dealing with vegetarian diets. I just make a few extra items, and they like the pie, because they are ovo-lacto vegetarians.

So, I really enjoy these Thanksgiving meals!

I LOVED your story Becky!!! That was sooo sweet of the guys and your husband...

I don't have any wild or wacky Thanksgivings that I can remember. In my grownup life, they're all pretty low key...they're at mom's house...we wear sweats or comfy clothing...we have a movie marathon, we plot our shopping for the next morning, and we always bring wayyy too much yummy food. We joke that it's a fancy holiday for us because we buy the FANCY paper plates with the drawings of turkeys on them. lol It's always a fun and relaxing day.

When I was growing up, my father was always intent on having the "perfect" Thanksgiving...the kind that belonged in a Norman Rockwell painting. Ugh...now that we're free from his tyranny, we purposely do it differently.

This thanksgiving will be the best one yet, I think. It's my first one with Christopher!!!

Ok, I have one more memorable Thanksgiving that I was thinking about today. This also happened in Germany. (what can I say? We've spent 7 years in Germany so I had a lot of memories from there) My husband's best friend in his unit was engaged to a German girl. She was so thankful because we included her in our plans for everything. She decided to cook the holiday dinner for us for Thanksgiving. All she asked was for a menu of what to make. I put mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes on the menu. She made the meal all by herself.

We arrived and there were no sweet potatoes. Only two bowls of mashed potatoes. The guys piled potatoes on their plates, poured gravy over it and as soon as they took big bites, they started gagging and spitting it out. Who knew there is no such thing as sweet potatoes in Germany??? She had put sugar in one bowl to make them sweet.

The rest of the meal was delicious and after a few minutes of shock, she joined in the laughter and we had a great Thanksgiving.

LOL my most meemorable one was as a 6year old. we went to a neighbors house for thanksgiving at noon time, the first not at our house Tday meal ever. SO of course when we got home we expected our own dinner at our regular time with all the turkey trimmings. My mother seeing the disapointed faces when we looked at the empty oven and ask where's our turkey? went into over drive and fixed it all. it was dark when we ate but it was our dinner.

              Re: Memorable Thanksgiving Tales

Okay, here's mine . . . my parents have always had Thanksgiving dinner at their house. Unfortunately, my father had a severe stroke last year and was in a nursing home over Thanksgiving. To top at off, the night before Thanksgiving I got the flu, I pretty much slept from Wednesday night until Sunday morning. My husband made crab legs and hash browns for him and my kids on Thanksgiving day. Comes Sunday morning and I'm feeling much better, so I decide to make our Thanksgiving dinner. Everything is going swimmingly, I take the turkey out of the oven and put the roasting pan on the stove to make gravey while the potatoes are cooking. Unknown to me, my roasting pan had a small hole in it and the grease from the turkey was leaking out and caught my stove on fire! I grab the flour and start pouring it over the flames and eventually get the fire out, during all this I see my oldest daughter standing frozen in the dining room with her mouth hanging open practically hyperventilating (she's not good in emergencies) and my youngest daughter crawling around on the floor yelling "stop, drop and roll." Where's my husband during all this? Sitting on the couch watching a football game. Eventually, things calmed down, I transferred the drippings into another pan and proceeded to make the gravy. When I start mashing the potatoes I realize that I turned the burner off under the potatoes during the fire, and end up with mashed potatoes with some very hard lumps! Thank goodness this year my father is home again and Thanksgiving will once again be at the folks' house! Thanksgiving greetings to all!
