  • Christmas for the military

I had to tell everyone about this. I was in Costco tonight, looking for some good meat to cook, and a woman touched me lightly on the shoulder. I turned around, thinking I might know her, and I had never seen her before in my life. She looked at me and simply said, "Thank you for serving our country."
I just looked at her for a moment, and said "Thank YOU", and she responded "No, thank you" and walked on by.
I have to tell you, that sentiment makes the past 12 years worth everything I have done. It's rare, but every once in a while someone will do that, and I can't tell you how much it means to those of us in uniform.
So...this holiday season, I would ask each of you to do something. When you see a military member, just stop for a brief moment and thank them for their service to our country. It will be one of the best Christmas presents you could ever give them.

Christopher...I'm glad she acknowledged her thanks for your service. I wish everyone would let the service members know how grateful we are for the job you do to help keep our country safer.

What a beautiful thing to do. You must have felt 10 feet tall (and so you should). All servicemen deserve our thanks and, most of all, acceptance and appreciation.

      Have a good Christmas.

        Re: Christmas for the military

I think alot of people are nervous about approaching men in uniform. I know I was. When I flew back to Norway last summer we had a military man on our flight. I was sooooooo nervous about talking to him, I debated most of the flight, I didn't want to bother him, but I really wanted to tell him how I felt. So finally when we were getting off the plane and he was in standing up and I tapped him and thanked him for the job he was doing and told him how much he was appreciated. Next thing I know, everyone is thanking him and talking with him. He smiled after that. I'm glad I took the chance.
You guys are awesome Alpha and I am thankful for all you do.

I think this is an excellent idea and I'm soooo glad that someone did that to you, Alpha. There's an Air Force base here in Tucson (not to mention an Army base nearby), and occasionally I see soldiers and airmen around town. I'm going to make extra sure that when I see one, I thank them for all that they do!!

If you're not near any bases or military reserve installations and don't see military folk a whole lot, there's still stuff you can do!!

www.booksforsoldiers.com is a great website in which, well, you donate books or other stuff to deployed personnel.

http://www.uso.org/pubs/8_20_10417.cfm The USO has many programs that you can help out with. Some of them don't cost a lot, and you'll be doing a lot of good!!

http://anyservicemember.navy.mil/ Operation Dear Abby doesn't send actual cards out anymore, but you CAN send an online note of greeting and thanks...and it's free!!

http://www.americasupportsyou.mil/am...syou/help.html This is a very COOL website that has a long list of different ways you can support the troops, including websites where you can get names for mailing cards to.

If every person in the Century Club sent one card to a service member, think of all the holiday love that would go out!!

When I was on my way home from basic training, my buddy and I were having lunch in Atlanta International waiting for our flight. When we went to pay, the waitress informed us that a gentleman had already paid our tab for us. It meant a lot to us at the time. Little acts of kindness towards servicemen go a long way.

In downtown Cleveland there are several miliary offices and a Coast guard station. I ALWAYS slow down my car and thank the military for their service to our country. I get the best reponses from these men and women! I don't want to get political here, but they need to hear that people here in this country support them, belieive in their mission and have their backs. If you watch the evening news, you would think that everyone is against them.

Yep a big thanks to all our service folk

Desertthorn was running a red cross coffee house at the anaconda base in 2004 maybe they are still open now and we could send stuff their too. all I had to pay for was the shipping to NY and declare a customs form for the stuff she had on her list of supplies they needed.

                  Re: Christmas for the military

Thank you all for your replies to this. And anything you can do to help / show support is appreciated so much by those of us in uniform.

I do have to apologize for posting this in this particular forum. This morning I realized it should probably have gone in the Chit Chat forum instead of one of the actual Diet forums.

That being said, thank you again from a grateful soldier.

                    JoAnne,

I think all these programs are wonderful. I *used* to have about 15 pen pals deployed all over the world. I met my first fiance through a "dear airman" letter actually. We lived together for a year before we realized we weren't a perfect match. I will talk to my husband and see what he is comfortable with us doing as a couple.
