  • I have a question!

I have a question... I know a lot of people choose to stay on extended induction. So here's my question, what's the perk to staying on extended induction? Do you continue to lose at a faster rate? If so, why doesn't everyone do it then? I was just curious about that...

    Re: I have a question!

I think some people do stay in EI because they think they will lose faster. Also, OWL is a little more complex (but not much more!) than simply following the Induction rules. Sometimes, too, the greater freedom of the rungs causes "carb creep" in some people at first.

Me personally, I tried EI for a few weeks but got bored. I like going up the rungs and getting to enjoy a greater variety of foods. It really lessened my feeling of being "deprived" of something. And I am still losing weight at the same, if not faster, pace (right now about 2 lbs a week).

For those with exceptionally wonky bloodsugars, extended Induction helps regulate hunger and blood sugar levels. I know Extended Induction is my preferred state of being while following Atkins.

        Re: I have a question!

        Pretty much what Allie said

I'm staying on Extended induction for a few reasons. For me, at least, I lose much faster in this phase and don't feel deprived.

Secondly, I have to be really careful about what I eat because certain foods I find are my "Trigger foods" - in that they trigger a blood sugar rise causing me to feel hungry when I'm actually not and crave more food, etc.. If I started moving into OWL I'm really worried that I will be faced with more trigger foods. For now I am happier sticking to the basics, because at the moment, I'm very time-goal oriented (wedding..). After I come back from my honeymoon, both me and my fiance plan on moving into OWL and then into maintenance because we both want to make this a part of our lifestyle.

Like Allie mentioned, many people get bored with extended induction... If you find yourself getting bored and feeling deprived, you should move into OWL. Feeling deprived is one of the biggest reasons people quit. So even if you lose a little slower (and you may or may not...).. it is better to stay on the wagon then to quit.. so in the long run you will actually be losing more

I would recommend staying on extended induction and seeing how well you like it and how much you lose on it. Then read up on OWL a bit and see if that sounds like something you'd be happier with. You can always switch back to extended induction if you find that OWL isnt' working for you quite yet.

          Re: I have a question!

I have high metabolic resistance so I stayed on extended induction a long time. I also have trouble with food cravings and induction is safer. I only occasionally move a few rungs into OWL when I get bored. For me Veggies and Nuts rungs are as far as I go.

See? And I would say that Extended Induction isn't for everyone or even most everyone.

Statistically, people who lose weight more slowly keep it off better. Not only that, but our bodies acclimate to things we do pretty quickly. I had no intention of risking having to stay at 40 grams of carb a day for forever by letting my body acclimate to those types of numbers, and it amazes me how often I hear people in maintenance talking about such things! I also wanted/needed to venture outside the Induction box to learn more about my body and various foods and how I'd react to them. By staying inside the safety of the Induction box, I'd have never learned a lot of things. - Including how to not be afraid of food.

            Those were my reasons.

              Re: I have a question!

Thanks for all of the answers!!! I think for now I might stay in ei for a bit, ( what am I saying, I'm only on the 4th day) but I really like here.. nice and cozy, I know what I can or can't do, and I'm not tempted to even try to step out of the box right now. If I get bored, I will look into owl, just to keep on track, that's a really smart idea..

                Re: I have a question!

As an extra option, there is Modified OWL.

It is induction ease with induction rules, only 3 times per week you take a food from the rung as you progress and rotate a new food in. This allows for blood sugar stability, coupled with the ability to do a food litmus test to see which foods and rungs agree with you and which won't.

It is in modified OWL that people find out what their food intolerances are (for me, essentially anything on the nut rung). Without modified OWL, I would not have figured that out.

There's more information about modified OWL in the OWL forum.

                  Re: I have a question!

Ya know, it's funny, I read more about what people LEARN about themselves on this diet from the inside out than any other diet that's out there...
Think about this... how many people have you heard talking about their blood levels, tri-glycerides, etc. etc. etc... I think it's sooooo cool that you guys aren't just learning about what different foods do what, you guys are learning about the full aspect of what it does to your body, not just your pants size....
