  • Extended Induction or OWL??

    Hi everyone!

I was just curious if everyone here stayed on induction because of the amount of weight that has to be lost? Or went on to the next phase?

I've just stayed on induction -- strict 20 carbs or less -- since starting on the 15th of Jan. I've lost 15lbs and clearly a good deal of inches because I got into my size 18 jeans the other day (they are actually a bit lose)before I started eating ATkins way I wore a 22 or could sometimes squeeze into a very tight 20.

I am going to take some measurements this weekend. I have been too scared to actually see the measurments. I can deal with what the scale says but for some reason the inches scare the heck out of me!

Anyway -- what should I do?
I have read that if you have alot of weight to lose you should consider staying on induction.

    Thanks!

read the chapter 13 questions and see if you are ready to move to chapter 14 OWL or not.
It really depends onyur food preferrences. ifyou want other foods move it you don't stay. if you feel good staybut make sure you make up with supplements ofr any vis andminerals you are missing if not move.

I did what ADBB calls modified O#WL I added back rung 1 5 net carbs of induction veggies and rung 3 anounce of nuts and stayed at 20 net carbs for 6.5 months and 100 pounds. Kent stayed in extended induction with just the added ounce of nuts Dr Atkins says to have after 14 day induction ends. he loved the foods and lost lots of weight too. Brook moved to OWL but held her carbs at about 30 and lost 95 pounds.
There is no right or wrong thing to do. it is your choice.

I have to say I'm afraid to move into full OWL, but I think I need to get my book back and read up on it. I really need to revise my foods.

Good luck with whichever you choose!

        Re: Extended Induction or OWL??

I've stayed on Extended Induction almost the entire time, and love it and find it works best for me!!

Though occasionally I eased up on the reigns for myself... Like when I was on a 7 day cruise to alaska.. I didn't cheat (in fact I did great!), but I did allow myself some fruit a sugar-free dessert occasionally. On days (or weeks) where I started to feel like I was deprived, I would allow myself one or two things in the upper-rungs..

But I'd say 95% of my effort was all done in Extended Induction. I have been thinking of moving into OWL, but think I will wait until after my wedding and then move into life-long maintenance. After my wedding I won't care as much about how fast or slow I am losing

But you need to find what works best for you - I'm one of those people who can eat the same foods every day and still be happy!

          Re: Extended Induction or OWL??

I stayed on extended induction for about 6 months, but by then I started to get bored with the types of food I was allowed to eat. So I moved into OWL, and was able to have alot more variety, my weight loss did slow down a bit, but I was happier with the variety of food I can now have, and I don't mind the weight loss being abit slower now. I know the last 22 lbs I want to lose, will take even longer, but at least I am not bored, which is more important to me!!!

I've stayed in extended induction, but have occasionally had nuts. As most people have said, it's totally up to you and your desires...

I stayed in inductoin for the first 100 pounds (about a year and a half) and have spent the last year moving up teh OWL ladder.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

                Thanks everyone!

I have talked with my husband (who is following the plan with me) and reread the book again (this probably makes the 50th time)

I am def. going to stay in extended induction phase for at least 75lbs. I am doing great with the food - not having any problem finding good yummy stuff
to eat. I have eaten more good stuff like salads and veggies the past couple weeks than I ever have in my life!

I appreciate all your opinions and sharing what you did to lose the weight!

                  Re: Extended Induction or OWL??

                  ProudSahm,

I'm right there with you. Restarted 1/11/06 (lost 40lbs first time) and am planning on staying on the extended induction for at least 100 lbs. and have lost 12.5 lbs. so far. Also joined a few excerise challenges, which keeps me from slacking off. For the first week, I was buying everything that said "low carb" at the store until after reading some old postings, which enlightened me. Just because it says it's low carb doesn't mean it's Atkins low carb. Thus, I too went back and re-read a chapter or two of the book. Plan on signing up for boot camp next time around.

Thanks to all the others who have posted here regarding sticking with the extended induction. It's truly inspiring to hear your stories. I need to check out more of these forums.
