actually it is both persons who determine the sex of the child because while the sperm holds the key gene the female body creates the living comditions for those sperm on their journey to the egg and the distance they have to travel to met that egg.

boy sperm swim faster but don't live as long girl sperm swim slower and live longer. if the female has a higher then normal acidity level the slower swimming sperm can get killed before the reach the egg. Also the location of the egg at the time of the "act" can efect the sex as the faster dying boy sperm might not swim far enough to reach it if it isn't already down the tract yet while those slower swimming longer living girl sperm can arrive when the egg does even days later.
