  • new with a ?

Hey everyone, I am back to atkins. I have tried a lot of other diets and none seem to be for me. Atkins is the only diet that I can lose weight on. I never stay on it very long because the doctors around here don't approve. I have a lot of health problems including emphysema and I take a lot of meds. It is hard for me to lose, so here I am again. I had a question but the answer is probably no but here goes. Are the mccormack dry gravy mixes allowed on atkins? I wanted to make mushroom gravy to go with my hamburger this evening.

    Thank you all in advance.

Hi and welcome and I don't think they're allowed because it's not on the induction acceptable foods list.

Here's and excellent way to make mushroom "gravy": slice up desired amount of mushrooms and put them in a pan with some butter and some diced onion, a little garlic powder, salt and pepper. when the onion starts getting soft, add a tbsp of balsamic vineger or sherry or any wine. Cover with lid for a few minutes. When mushrooms have cooked to desired doneness, add 1-2 tbsp of cream cheese. Ends up a lot like stroganoff......and only takes about 10 minutes!

oops that isn't an induction acceptable recipe cause the sherry and the baklamic vinegar are not allowed but you can use just sour cream and the mushrroms and herbs for grave or cream cheeses without the not acceptable stuff.

Welcome back to ADBB and to Atkins. Check the place out cause lots has changed but some old faces are still around.

Wait, this one isn't induction friendly. The balsamic and wine are both off limits during induction, but it sounds yummy for later rungs!

I would just put a little olive oil in a skillet, throw in the shrooms and a dash of garlic powder and let them give off their juice and put that on the hamburger. But, I like simple.

About the gravy: 2Big is right about the balsamic vinegar - just about any other vinegar will do. Using the alcohol as a flavoring is a judgement call people on induction will have to make for themselves. Per DANDR 2002 in the Food and Recipes section, the typical induction menu lists Steak au Poivre as an acceptable induction Dinner. The recipe for that does call for Cognac - which is an alcoholic beverage but most people know that alcohol is burned away when cooked, and therefore acceptable.

Jeri, just slice your mushrooms and sautee them in some butter with a clove of garlic. Mouth squirtin good.
                    Other toppings can be
Italian - Low carb spagetti sauce
Mexican -Cheddar Cheese and sliced jalapenos or even jack cheese with jalapenos
Spanish - Add some green olives

                    41 pounds down and counting

                            Re: new with a ?

you can have low carb anything if and only if all the ingredients in your food are listed in the acceptable foods lists. I can make low carb spaghetti sauce and be low carb. you might be able to buy sugar free without carb thickeners spaghetti sauce and have store bought too.

the recipe is one of those bad editing thingies from the creation of the new DANDR out of the old as a cut and paste. nobody screened the recipes to see if they followed the new rule 5 eat nothing not on the acceptable foods lists and not the old rule 5 make your own carb list from a carb counter book. There are other recipes in there too like the zuchinni one with nuts. if you called Atkins center after the docs death they would tell you the amount of nuts saw insignificant. However if you ask them if you could add insignificant amounts equal to the nuts of choclate chips, coconut, berries, other fruits and really make them great tasting muffins they had no reply.
