    Re: What's the rule?

Great Post Zelda girl, great posts everybody else. Thanks for helping this newbie. I have a 4can case of the shakes, they are in the back of the fridge. I will use them if I get stuck and unforseen situations arise and I need a quik plan...otherwise, I am very comfortable where I am . I am still very redicent to add anything sweet to my palate...

      Re: What's the rule?

My fault though because I was just informed that this book is not used on this forum. I guess what it comes down to is that Atkins is a company. Like every other company the bottom line is $$$. What better way to make money than Atkins approved shakes, bars and the like? Sticking to Atkins Original WOL is probably the best & fastest way to lose the weight. Mea Culpa!

Later in the book they have a sample list that has one or two of these products in just about every day of the sample 2 week menu.
I guess it's my assumption that if 2 is Ok during Induction it's probably Ok during the later stages (according to the book).
if you read ADBB's topic on which bok you will discover ADBB uses only the book written by Dr Atkins called DR ATKINS NEW DIET REVOLUTION 2002 edition as that was the last one written by him.

When a company decided folk are too lazy to follow the doctors plan and creats one for the convenyence of the overweight folk so they can sell their products as Slimfast does ADBB drew a line in the sand and said NO! If you do a bars and shakes weight loss plan then you better plan to eat bars and shakes for the rest of your life or you will be like the slimfast loyal customers regainign and losing the weight again and again.

Do Atkins according to Dr Atkins and yiou will learn what real whole foods your metabolism can handle and how to eat in the real world.

If you have trouble losing weight you may want to replace these products with protein and fat whole foods during the Induction phase."
I bolded the sentence that I have always thought was kinda shady. Here's why...

You're an Atkins newbie (never been on it before). It's your first week of Atkins...So how do you know you're having "trouble" losing weight? Some folks lose during the first week. Some lose during the second week. Some lose throught the first 14 days of this diet.

Also, if you read DANDR 2002 chapter 12 and 13 (the chapters addressing the results of your first 2 weeks and the chapter about the On-Going Weight Loss Phase), you'll see that the results you get during the first 14 days are incredibly important because those results will determine how you should plan the rest of your diet.

So it's quite possible to eat those products, lose 1 or 2 pounds during your 14 day Induction and think "Gosh this diet isn't for me." or think "Gee, I have severe metabolic resistance to weight loss. Looks like I'll never be able to move above 20 net carbs daily."

So if you do choose to use these products, do it after the first 14 days of Induction. This 2 week period is very important and you don't want to screw it up because it will be alittle trickier for you to plan how to proceed with the remainder of your weight loss journey.

Outback Jess, I'm really glad you're understanding how the frankenfoods (aka: commerically made foods;not natural) can work for your body. I wish you great success on your journey..and it looks like you're off to a great start

                Re: What's the rule?

I was just re-reading the 2002 DANDR edition and found an interesting line... page 129, bottom of the page on point number 1:

"Not all convenience food products are the same, so check labels and carbohydrate content. I can vouch for any product carrying the Atkins brand name!"

I wonder if he ever wished he had those words back...

                    Re: What's the rule?

when he wrote those words only 2-3 bars existed and they were sweetened with glyceine and mannitol only. I can very well remember the revamping of ther Atkins.com website in 2003 and the explosion of foods a full yr after the book was written and foods reformulated and labeled as induction freindly. Dr Atkins on Larry King in his last televised interview said very clearly when ask about all kinds of foods and stuff to be patient induction was only 14 days long you had the rest of your life for those other products.

Oh, I quite agree. They are evil . I was just surprised to find that in the book, but now that I understand the timing it becomes more clear.

Do a little search thru recipe books and online.. you'll find many make-at-home things that mimic the store bought things - only better for you! There are some really creative people out there. Shakes and bars and desserts. Nuts and cheese and jerky.. okay, maybe not the cheese, but the others can be toted with you and eaten in a pinch. Heck, just about all stores carry nuts and jerky and water LOL

                          Hi Jess

I have just come back from Boots, where i debated this very subject standing infront of a wall of Atkins milkshakes and chocolate bars. I was so tempted, but then i thought NO! I have a limited time and want to make the most of my induction as possible. Why do this if im only going to do it half way! The danger with the bars is that they are delicious and I always want more than one.

Stay away from them if you can Jess. They cost too much and arent worth the stall.

Savannah I hear you on the wanting more. the Atkins indulge Ice cream bars actually had a warning about endulging responsibly and that the box had 6 servings in it.

and don't forget newbies we have a limit of 3 sweetner servings a day from all sources and a serving is based on manufacturers serving size like a can of soda is 1.5 of those servings.

The rule is: Take them back to the store that you bought them from! Stay away from those things. I tried one of those sweet endulgence bars last year and i thought i would puke!
