The reason I know about the little white lie thing is because I started using it all the time. I've gotten migraines since I was 5 (they run in my family) and I just tell my extended family or not-so-close friends that the doc is trying to see if they are related to food.
It is sooo much easier than spending the whole event hearing about how they know this person or that person whose muscles seized up while doing atkins, or sometimes people will tell me that I don't need to lose more weight and I won't look good. I know how much fat I have on my body and I know I don't want it there, but I think sometimes people don't actually want you to succeed and look good and healthy. Anyone else have this problem?
P.S. My migraines are actually getting much better since starting atkins.

You know, it is so interesting that you brought this up! (And i am very glad that your migraines are getting better!) They ARE related to food, in some cases!!!
My best friend has horrific migraines & suffers from pain & nausea everyday. She's been going downhill for the past year and a half, almost two years now, and it is just heartbreaking to see. She finally was diagnosed with Waardenburg's syndrome, a vestibular imbalance, and an Arnold Chiari Malformation of the brain - three very rare disorders - it is just crazy! And very difficult to see someone so seemingly healthy and young go downhill so rapidly, and my heart just breaks for her.
She is seeing an amazing specialist in Portland, OR who specializes in the inner ear and vestibular issues. They put her on a modified "Zone" diet to see what foods affect her. From what i understand, the foods that we eat can impact the fluid in your head, which can in turn cause headaches or migraines. Sugar was one of the top things that impacts her so negatively! It is amazing... i had no idea.
If you are interested, i could ask her to write me some specifics about this subject and share that with you...

That would be great Dragonfly! I've tried every medicine and alternative treatment known to man with no real answers. I think because migraines are prevalent in my family the docs just chalk it up to heredity. Now my eight year old daughter gets them about four times a year, which just breaks my heart.
LaLa - I know how your BF feels. When I was a teenager, the migraines were probably at their worst, about 3 to 4 times a week. I did used to smash my head against the wall (or the toilet). I think my mother was beginning to think I had a mental problem, but it was just because it hurt so bad and I couldn't do anything to alleviate the pain in any way. It is the worst pain in the world. I've been in labour twice and a migraine is 20 times worse than the worst contraction (to me anyway).

I usually give him something hard to knock him out a Vicoden or some sort of pain killer it puts him to sleep and when he gets up it's gone... i know self medication is cool but he grown so all i can do anything to help him.. I am sure if he got on a healthier foods in him it would be better.. all that sugary Mt.Dew can't be good for you..

Sofarsogood ~ i am so sorry that you have to experience the pain of migraines, and that your daughter is now getting them too! My friend has a book on pain and they rank migraines as the worst pain you can have... and even list it above childbirth, so i definitely believe you there! I haven't heard back from my friend yet ~ she is having a really bad day. But perhaps she'll email me back tomorrow. I'm hoping she'll have some good information for you.
What types of medicine have you tried? I'll have to see if i can find out what she is on now. They have had her on loads of different things and she hasn't found success on any of them. They finally have her on something that does take the edge off, but basically just makes her sleep through it. I'm not sure how she's doing on this new one; if she is happy with it or not. I'll get back to you as soon as i hear from her!

Migraine sufferer too. Been known to do the head banging too. It sure felt better than the pain of the migraine. Paprika sets me off if I have too much. And chili powder. I have to watch those closely. Stess, lack of water. And SUGAR. If I ate a piece of wedding cake you can bet I was having a headache. That's also symptoms of borderline diabetes, which runs in my family. All the more reason to go on Atkins!
Muscles seizing up? That's a new one LOL My mom went on and on about how bad all those eggs and bacon is for you. And how a person just cannot live on meat and a salad. Gosh, she's right! You cannot! I tried to enlighten her and my sister (who is borderline diabetic) to no avail. So I stopped trying. I've lost 19 pounds and going strong. My mom is still struggling to get back on WW and my sister vows she will start walking and doing low-fat again soon. If it works for them - great! It don't for me and I know it. Atkins is the ONLY thing that has ever helped me and that I have stayed on the longest and with such ease. This time around I'm adding foods instead of staying on extended induction and I really think that is key. They scoffed at my faux taters (cauliflower) one year and after that I stopped trying to show them that just like on WW you find substitutes for foods. They don't want to know. They'd rather be uneducated. I think I even loaned them both my first book. Don't guess they read it. Oh well.. their loss and MINE too
