  • So, is it really worth the second time?

I actually found this site while googling 'Atkins for a second time' or something along those lines, and really thought it would be worth getting opinions from people who were trying again. Pardon the long post that will follow, it is a basic rundown of my experience with the way of eating.

The first time I did Atkins was a few years ago. I dropped from 185 to 130 in no time at all, and looked pretty darn hot if I do say so myself. I sustained a comfortable weight of around 135-145 for a good year and a half simply by being reasonable (watching the sugar, moderate excercise, not eating tons of bread, etc).

Quite a lot happened to me in a few months time, some of which I'd rather not dredge into, but the weight started coming on, but not so much that it was alarming. Then I moved to England. Great, I thought, the English seem to keep pretty thin, I'll just live like they do. No more car means walking miles a day without realizing it. However, there is a lack of ANYTHING sugar-free here (I can't even find sugar-free cough syrup, what do diabetics do?), and pretty much anything prepackaged at the store is loaded with added sugar (I am told it is a preservative). I have to make my own salad dressing or bring it from the US, and even old standbys like lunchmeat and bacon have SUGAR in them!

So basically, I ballooned. In half the time it took me to lose the weight I was up to 205, larger than I had ever been in my life. I gained over 50 lb in a matter of MONTHS.

In March, I started back on Atkins. I was in the US for a while waiting on immigration paperwork, and it was easy as pie with the products available. I had the motivation of getting married in July, and started working out vigorously.

It isn't working. It just isn't working. My first time around I could up my vegetables and start on the berries and nuts and still get dramatic results. I have been lowering my carb count bit by bit until I am basically fasting on eggs and meat out of desperation. It still isn't working well. I am back in the UK and it is even harder because I can't keep myself sane with my little treats like sugar-free lifesavers. If I was seeing any sort of result, I would be a bit more enthusiastic. To make matters worse, the weight gain has made my sciatica act up like **** again (when I was at my goal it rarely, rarely, rarely acted up) and it is making me not want to excercise.

To be fair, I have lost 10 lb, but it is becoming such a struggle I wonder if this is really the way of eating I should be persuing. The 10 lb could easily be just from jogging and the liters of water I drink a day. When I have to eat out I can't even order a salad because all the dressings here are so loaded with sugar, and I swear I tasted sugar on a steak once. I usually just sit there hungry and mope longingly at everyone's food.

So basically, how slow is too slow the second time? My mother wants me to go to the Dr and see if there is a medical reason I can't lose weight, but right now it is not a financial option until I am a legal resident (in Augustish). Has anyone struggled this much the second time, and will it EVER work again?

Re: So, is it really worth the second time?

Did you start off with a totally clean induction your second time round?? having that much time off you need to go at it like the first time, you cant just get back on at the rung you were on...

This is my second time around, and i'm more positive than ever that i am going to stick with this way of eating for LIFE, its not a fad diet, its not something you can use just to lose the weight you've got to stick with it for life.

I'm finding it slower this time around, makes me so sorry i fell off when i did, but i'm still losing, and that is all that matters.

Hi and welcome back. yes, it does in fact work but it's going to take longer. You get that one golden chance and by going off the way of eating you've confused your body. You just have to eat meats and fresh or frozen veggies. Looking for sugar free franken foods is not really something you need to be doing. They stall you out and feed your addiction. Maybe you can order things like dressing on the internet.

Second time round is definately worth it. I found that I have discovered it is not a race. The weight is still coming off, a pound every 3 - 4 weeks is still okay. I could do better, but I'm way to busy with other things.

I'm eating good, and almost have caffiene under control. The second time around has been fantastic for me. This forum and it's people are worth their weight in gold when it comes to motivation and fellowship.

My 2 cents so to speak. Best of luck.

Re: So, is it really worth the second time?

          1. Yes, I did start on clean induction. I am actually hard on myself like I was the first time, keeping at about 15 carbs a day to give me leeway for miscalculation. I don't cheat--at all, despite everyone else egging me on saying you have to once in a while.

          2. The sugar addiction is gone completely, but it has been months and yes, I would like a sugar-free hard candy here or there. Plus the um...laxative side effect was nice, I don't go for days on Atkins, despite benefiber and cauliflower. I am more worried about added sugar in things that don't need sugar. For example, today I was at Sainsbury's (mid-scale shopping store on this side of the pond) and I found a packet of lemon-herb zucchini. 'Fabulous' I think to myself and proceed to figure out the nutrition facts (a lot of food over here does nutrition facts by the 100g, so you have to do a bit of division to figure out what you are eating) and it had a whopping 16 grams of sugar in a cup! I read the ingredients and sure enough, sugar. Also, I have a cold and knowing I have to hack all night and can't take a spoonful of cough syrup is killing me. I asked my fiance what diabetics in this country do, he just shrugged and said 'try really hard not to get sick?'

I normally would make everything from scratch, but we don't live near enough a shopping center to keep a ton of fresh food indoors, being that I don't drive, and it does rain a lot. On a nice day I'll walk there or the produce stand but juggling groceries and an umbrella doesn't suit me.

I do order stuff like dressing online, for a whopping £5 (10 dollars) for the smallest bottle of dressing you've ever seen, so it really is a treat. I guess I am frustrated because the results aren't what I'd like them to be. I did get a new scale today (like, right after I posted originally), and it turns out my stone to lb conversion was wrong, I have actually lost 17 lb, so I feel a bit better

Thanks for reminding me that it isn't a race--I do tend to take things that way. The first time around was just so incredible. My body melted away into a pile of loveliness. If you guys say it will work, I will keep at it.
I really am ranting from a rargh im frustrated place right now.

Re: So, is it really worth the second time?

            Hi, Chubb

Second time around is definitely worth it.

About that "one golden shot" thing - everyone is different. It is probably safe to say that most people lose slower the second time around. But for me, it doesn't hold up. While I did lose less during induction this time around, my rate of loss since then has been just as good. I attribute that to doing Atkins strictly by the book this time. I didn't progress through the rungs properly the first time. OWL rocks!

Also, I have forced myself to try many new things, which I didn't the first time. That makes for a limited menu. And, I get at least half of my net carbs from veggies. You mentioned that you don't "go" for days when doing Atkins. My bet is that you are not getting enough fiber. You should not have to depend upon sugar free candy to go to the bathroom. I go like clockwork.

I also rarely eat anything processed. No deli meats, pepperoni, sausage, and I eat sugar free bacon only about 2 or 3 times a month. I even grate my own cheese now after finding out that bagged, shredded cheese has potato starch in it to prevent caking. No shakes, no bars, or other frankenfoods.

My first time around, I didn't carefully measure everything and I didn't keep track of my net carbs and calories on something like Fitday. I do this time around, and it is making a difference.

            Best of luck to you!

Re: So, is it really worth the second time?

I am losing faster and more steadily than the first time. I attribute that to cleaner eating (no frankenfoods except the occasional Atkins shake for breakfast) moving on to OWL right after Induction rather than extended Induction, making sure I am eating enough calories and my percentages are right, drinking more water, and using Fitday to keep track of stuff.

I hope the losses pick up for you!!

Re: So, is it really worth the second time?

I'm in agreement with mitzi and skinnymom--I've been FAR more successful this time, my 2nd time, so DO NOT fall into the trap of believing that you "blew your golden shot".

I did Atkins in 2003 by my own rules, and managed to lose 70 pounds, but I was doomed to failure. I had no clue what I was doing. Fast forward to 2006, I'm fat, miserable, achy, depressed, and I had to do something about it. I began Atkins weighing 265, and now I'm down to 184. I exercise, drink water, eat only whole, unprocessed foods, and even at 184, I'm a size 10. A size 10. The smallest I've ever been was a size 12 before! And I've still got a ways to go...to a size 6 or 8. It can be done a second time! I plan to continue this indefinitely--my second time will be my LAST time.

First off, 17 pounds is FABULOUS! Have you been taking measurements? Often, I'll go a week without losing a pound, but I'll lose 4 inches off my body. The tape measure will tell the TRUE story of your success when the scale won't.

I "go" like clockwork too. I eat a variety of veggies each day, and I drink PLENTY of water, usually more than a gallon. Sometimes if you're not drinking enough water, that can lead to constipation. You should be drinking 64 ounces, plus 8 ounces for every 25 pounds you want to lose.

Don't give up! You've accomplished something great--losing 17 pounds--something that MANY people would not have been able to do. The beauty of Atkins is that the weight loss is a pleasant side effect. I am on Atkins because I LOVE the food (people stare wide-eyed at all the delicious foods I eat, guilt-free), I am not a prisoner to cravings, I have completely rid myself of irritability and mood swings caused by low blood sugar, I have not had a MIGRAINE since I began Atkins, I have energy to go to the gym 6x a week, and I feel like I can finally enjoy eating, rather than feeling like food is plugging a hole in my soul. The weight loss is just an added bonus!

You bet it is! It' worth a second ,third, forth, as many times that it takes. Always try to remember, most importantly, it's a lifestyle, not a diet. Just keep going, everything will fall into place for you. And when you can afford it, go get some lab work done to see what's going on there. Just continue this woe. It really does work! There's little I can add to what everyone's said here. Good advice from everyone. Julie's right 17 pounds is fantastic!

It sounds like you are in a fix not being able to purchase the items that are sugar-free, or little to no sugar. All I can advise is make your own.

Here is a site that has many recipes : http://genaw.com/lowcarb/index.html . Making your own is pretty simple I'm told.

Also Scooter has a recipe for sugar-free sausage: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...er%27s+sausage
Lots of people here have made it and love it.

Good luck, let us know how you're doing!
