  • Stalls - food ok on previous attempts?

Has anyone found a food that stalls them - that they could eat in the past?

The first time I did Atkins, I was very by the book, and lost a lot.(45 lbs - until I got pregnant) The next 2 -3 times I drank coffee and still lost - as long as I kept it up.

Now, I am not doing so well. My carbs are about 20- 25 per day, I have missed 3 days exercising in the past 3 weeks and I have only lost 4 lbs and about 10 inches. I am not complaining, but it doesn't seem like very much.

I am drinking 2 cups of coffee a day with cream - I need / really enjoy it - my 3 year old does not sleep through the night and I am studying a really intense course right now. I would hate to give it up! I am going to buy some decaf today and see if it makes a difference.

Has anyone else found that something they were fine with on a previous attempt - that seems to stall them now? Everything else I am eating is legit.

    Thanks!

Re: Stalls - food ok on previous attempts?

You know, I have been stuck at my current weight for 7 days now. I haven't been too worried, because that happened last time as well. I discovered this morning that I've been using my daughter's coffee creamer for the past week. It has sugar and 5 carbs per serving! My creamer bottle looks just the same without sugar and it got pushed to the back of the refrigerator.
Like you, I have to drink my coffee in the morning, I'm just glad that my mistake has just caused me to be stalled. I also got back to measuring everything (like creamer or cream) again - think I have just been slopping amounts into the cup or onto the salad.

Generally we lose one to two pounds a week so don't be concerned. Your doing fine

The acceptable list is foods that generally don't cause weight gain or stalls....when we go up the OWladder we add foods slowly to make sure they don't cause us problems.

Staller's are often Atkins bars, shakes, candy and crapola that says their legal

        OH yes... oh my yes.

In 1997 when I initially did Akins so successfully, I think there might have been 2 or 3 bars, and then the powdered shake mix and that was it. They just started getting more products as I went into maintenance and I really just didn't care for much of what was out there.

In my failed attempts since, I've hit a wall any time I ate anything other than the premade shakes on a semi-regular basis. The bars and baking mixes were all bad for me. The muffins particularly... I think they tasted nasty anyway. So this time, I'm going without that stuff, though I do have 2 packs of the premade shakes in my refrigerator because a premade shake is better than a binge on something that's bad... sometimes a girl just needs chocolate.

Other than these foods, I haven't really seen any stalls that I can contribute to food intake. You can always experiment by not eating something you think might have caused a stall for a month or 6 weeks or so. If you continue to stall, it might not have been that thing. If the stall ends then after a while add it back and see what happened.

It's best not to compare what happened the last time you did something as compared to this time -- your body is different today than it was 3 months ago or 3 years ago - are you as active as you were before, do you sleep as much (or as little as before), are you on prescription medications? Your hormones change over time so what happened the last time probably won't happen again this time.

When you want to drink or eat something that isn't on the acceptable food list grab some celery sticks, radish slices or something that is legal - have a large glass of water and do something other than think about eating.

          Good luck

Re: Stalls - food ok on previous attempts?

Like Carole, I can't compare this time to the last time or the time before that. I WISH!! I started my original Atkins journey in October 2004 at 210+. In February 2005, I weighed 170. Ahh Life was good.

I kept between 170 and 175 for about four years. I got married and put on a couple more pounds then I quit smoking.

In 2004 when I did the original journey, I was a heavy drinker and a heavy smoker. I haven't drank in three years and I haven't smoked in a year SOOOOOOOO my point is that my body/metabolism is NOTHING like it was in 04.

I do, however, believe in journaling. I've been neglecting that lately but I'll get started back. (I don't like to keep my journal on this site because...well, nevermind). I'll keep a real paper journal. So, if you journal, you can look back at the times that you were losing well and see what you were doing.

I also think it's important to document moods/ events. What's going on in your life? Don't you think that this can make a difference in weight loss?

            So, good luck to you!!!

Re: Stalls - food ok on previous attempts?

Thanks for your responses, I have switched to decaf and today am down one pound - so who knows. The other thing I noticed is the amount of cream I have been having in my coffee - normally my husband makes coffee and he is obviously pouring in more than one tbsp. That could be it. Maybe I will leave a measuring spoon out for him tomorrow......

I know it is healthier to loose weight slowly - I am just impatient and want it to happen now!

Many people loose even slower 1-2 pounds per month on the WOL. I think during induction people loose more rapidly but not necessarily with on going weight loss.

Also I think the more you have to loose the quicker it comes off initially. Once you get closer to your goal it should slow down.

Re: Stalls - food ok on previous attempts?

Age takes a toll and each time you return your body has spent more time at a higher weight so it is often more resistant to leaving that weight than before. I find I lose with a different pattern this time than last even though the amount of weight over time is the same.

I agree, it's interesting how my weight is coming off this time. I think I lost more during the first 14 days this go-round but the stall seems longer (at least I am not gaining weight). I kept a journal for the first two years I was on Atkins and I have been reviewing it to get some ideas and cheer myself on. I did not know about this site then so my inspirational messages were written to myself. It is so good to be able to run things by people with knowledge of what on earth I am talking about. Thank you.
