  • Low carb foods and the acceptable food list and 'cheating' ?

    OK.

I've been reading on this forum and I'm a bit concerned about something I've assumed.

I've made small adjustments to my diet WRT adding foods which aren't on the acceptable food list. These foods are low in cards or I can 'borrow' from other meals and then eat the foods later.

For example coconut milk. One can of coconut milk is only 5g of carbs. I also have lentil wafers in the form of papadam at an indian restraunt when I have tandoori chicken.

I'd like to loose weight faster. Should I cut this out and get REALLY strict or am I ok as long as I am < 20g per day?

I'm solidly in ketosis and am checking 3x per day. Sometimes I show up negative but I think thats because I'm drinking a LOT of water.

Ohh.. another big thing I've added is Whey protein and unsweetened chocolate which has no carbs. I make a shake out if it for breakfast with whole cream.

It only has 2g of total carbs. I assume this is ok?

The main thing is to stay under 20 carbs.
Weight loss isn't a race. The slower you lose it the longer it generally stays off.

You shouldn't be 'substituting' types of foods for others even if you do keep your carbs below 20 when on atkins. The foods you are having are to be added in OWL and there is a reason for this. You need to add the OWL foods gradually so you can see how your body reacts, or doesn't, to each (some of these foods may actually be a trigger or stall food). The legumes you are having in the popadums are actully not allowed until the 7th rung of OWL. If you want to do a proper induction, if it's a food or ingredient not on the induction list, don't eat it, regardless of the amount carbs.

If you want to do it this way it's not atkins, and you may want to post your question in the 'low carb dieting other than atkins' forum.

As for the protein shake: check the ingredients list and make sure they are all legal (no soy etc). However, watch your protein intake, too much protein is not good either. Unless you are a serious body builder, or are not getting your 30% protein, you should not need a protein supplement, it may also cause problems with your weightloss (I believe excess protein turns to glucose).

If you haven't done so already, open a free account on www.fitday.com and track the foods you are eating. you should be eating 65% fat 5% carbs and 30% protein in induction.

Here is a sticky on protein amounts. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=1117

Burton, I guess I'll agree with everything that's been posted here but perhaps you could post in the low-carb forum so as to avoid confusing newbies on 14-day Induction? Also because in the lo-carb forum you may get a whole lot more answers to your liking in that forum without confusing or offending anyone

I know this will sound snooty and I'll probably get a new load of hate PMs for it, but....

This is the Atkins 14 Day Induction Forum. As the forum description says we offer advice "by the book".

Can you lose weight on a low carb diet other than Atkins? Sure. People are successful on Hampton's, Carbohydrate Addicts and even on low carb diets they devise themselves.

But since this is the Atkins forum of the board, you will get Atkins advice and part of that advice is the Induction Rule to not eat anything that isn't on the Induction foods list.

If you want to do your own thing, it's up to you. However, please be mindful that there is a Low carb diet other than Atkins forum on ADBB because in the past, low carbers would confuse or get into fights with the Atkins dieters here over what's allowed and what's not allowed.

This is not a way of eating where it is ok to substitute foods. It is not a matter of simply eating 20 carbs or under per day. You MUST, if you are going to do Atkins, do it by the book. If you decide to do it a different way, you are not doing Atkins.

The experience of thousands and thousands of people is that this woe works because of several reasons. First, you go into ketosis and start burning fat for energy. Second, you detox from all but a certain type of carbs and sugars. Third, your progress back to a less restrictive diet is done in prescribed stages and steps, with lots of time for experimenting to see what kinds of carbs work for you.

THis really works. My advice is to go strictly by the book on this forum, or go explore the "Other low carb diets" forum.

I agree with what everyone has said here, you will have better success if you stick with the induction diet prescribed in the book. If you don't have the book, you should go out and buy it and read it from cover to cover. It sounds like you have the exercise part down, now you need to get strict with yourself about the diet part. If you do, you will start losing again. Good luck!

And another thing, the foods you listed like coconut milk and lentils are fine for the On-Going Weight Loss, Pre-Maintenance and Maintenance Phases of Atkins. There's more to Atkins than the Induction Phase where carb amount and carb foods are severely limited.
