    Hi everyone. Long time reader, first time poster...

    well anyway, I started atkins about 10-11 days ago...
    (well thats the first time I started anyway)

    so the first time I started, i didnt have too much background info, so when i got the "beginners flu" I immediately stopped. Then for some reason I messed up again once. Then last week I said NO MORE EXCUSES...
    I started up, was excersising and everything...but come saturday it was one of my friend's birthdays. I drank a little too much..then i started m,ixing my drinks with coke...i messed up!!

    so sunday i started again. and now i am NOT going to mess up again. but I am very very confused...the day after i drank, the strips said i was still in ketosis. Every day i use it and it turns dark pink. Is it lying?
    how can i be in ketosis after alcohol and coke full opf sugar??

    so yesterday I had the flu, and today im feeling a bit better.

    I just dont understand the whole strip thing...how can i be in ketosis...and if i really was, wouldnt i lose some weight by now (not down a pound)

    Also, did i ruin my system by starting up then screwing up atkins so many times??

    No its probably not lying, but being in ketosis doesn't necessarily mean that your going to lose weight, it only means that your taking in a low level of carbs. SOme folks never show on the stick and others do. Its not a great indicator of losing weight.
    If I were you, I would post a couple days of everthing that goes into your mouth and see what the experts think. Often something that you think is legal might be the problem
    Also how much do you want to lose? Thats also extremely important. Lynne

      ok let me give you some background info...

      I am a 20 year old male. About 5'6"
      I wieght 195, i need to be at around 160

      Here is what i eat on the average day:

      When I wake up, I eat 2 boiled eggs. Then every other day, right after this i run a mile and a half.
      Then 2 hours later I eat an entire can of starkist tuna with some lettuce.

      Then for lunch i eat about 6-7 pieces of roasted chicken (leg, thigh etc).

      For dinner I eat another 4-5 pierces of chicken and a homemade beef patty (its pretty oily)
      After dinner at 10ish I eat another one of the patties..

      over the course of the day I also consume about half a cucumber, some lettuce, 3-4 pieces of broccoli, and over 80 oz of water...

      I dont know what im doing wrong. Also, i feel very drained of evergy. I just feel like sleeping all day

      Am i not eating enough veggies?
      Let me know whats wrong.

        Actually your menu looks fine, and I am not sure what you might be doing wrong, but I have sent a link to one of our experts to see what he thinks.
        Do you do any of those low carb shakes or bars?
        The only think that I could tell you is that maybe you should try to eat a carb, a protein and a fat at each meal.
        What kind of chicken are you eating. If its fried KFC that could be your problem. Some of the broasted ones are injected with sugar. Check labels and make sure your not getting any hidden carbs.

          Yes.. before doing 'clean' induction I was never able to loose weight even thhough I *thought* I was doign Atkins and that the ketostix showed that I was in ketosis.

          It might be that while your in Atkins that your not following the diet perfectly. I'd read the book and measure your food and be careful not to allow anything to sneak in.

            I've also read in the atkin book that drinking alchohal will slow your weight loss. It does not have any carbs but, I am almost certian drinking it mixes with something in your body. This could also be why your not seeing the results you desire, especially in induction phase.

              And I read here that something in alcohol shows up on the ketostix similar to ketones - so you might not be in ketosis even though the strips show colour. When you drink alcohol your body will use that as fuel in preference to the fat you are eating and store that fat!!
              Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

                plus... sometimes the strip will show ketosis (like after the drinking)... because the contents of your bladder still have ketones from before..........but if you test LATER.... THEN the results of the drinking might be evident, and you might be kicked out of ketosis...

                (I mean... if I'm in Ketosis... and eat a cupcake.... it's probably going to keep showing ketosis for SEVERAL hours... until the cupcake has time to kick me out...... )

                  well i drank 4 days ago and the strip still says im in ketosis...

                  still havent lost anything though...

                  some other things im not sure about

                  1. i take asthma medicine, and a pill for my ulcer/gastritis

                  do those affect atkins at all

                  2. i take out the yellow part of my egg...should i eat it? i figured the egg whites are the haelthy part anyway

                  3. whats the deal with mayo and cool whip? i see alot of people saying they eat it, but dont they have carbs??

                  4. still confusd why im nto losing

                    well... so much for that theory... maybe your strips are just bad...

                    I don't like the yellow egg either... I boil 6... trash 5 yolks.. and chop the whites with the one yolk for egg salad..

                    I use DUKE's mayo. here in the south.. it's a staple.. and never has had any sugar....

                    cool whip.... that's not ok...

                    heavy whipping cream with splenda can work... but not cool whip....

                    I'm sure somebody will correct me...

                    could it be a matter of portions? I know we don't really count calories... but 12 pieces of chicken... that seems like a bunch....

                      Well the easiest way for us to help you would be for you to give us a detailed account (not only what, but how much) of what you're eating/drinking, as well as your stats, what you're doing for exercise and whether or not you're taking supplements (and what they are) - and any additional meds you're taking.

                      To answer your question about alcohol, while most clear alcohols don't have any carbohydrates, they average about 70 calories per ounce - and most bars pour a jigger (1.5 ounces = 105 calories in booze per drink) - and that's if you don't know your bartender real well. At a party pouring your own? I'm betting you're pouring a heckuva lot more than 1.5 ounces per drink. While we don't have to count calories during induction and most of us don't have to count during OWL/PM - Calories absolutely *do* count, and by drinking you're consuming a whole lot of completely empty calories.

                      Your body will burn fuel in this order:
                      alcohol
                      carbohydrates
                      protein
                      dietary fat
                      then body fat.

                      Drinking alcohol will kick you out of ketosis while your body burns off the alcohol. Assuming you didn't eat anything carby in the interim, you'd be back in ketosis once the booze was burned.

                      Now, we'd need names for the meds to help you with your first question.

                      2. You can absolutely eat the entire egg. The yolk has lots of good fat in it and that's going to help keep you satisfied among other things

                      3. You can make your own mayo or watch the ingredients of the mayo you use (I use Helmans). Cool whip is ALWAYS a no-no, but you may be asking about heavy cream, which is just fine - but yes, does have carbs and is very calorie dense. It's also limited to 1oz during induction.

                      4. Just because you're in ketosis doesn't automatically mean you will lose fat. If you're taking in more than you're burning it's not going to matter if you're in ketosis or not. You can lose weight without being in ketosis just like you can gain weight while in ketosis. This is where posting a thorough and detailed menu and all the other things I listed at the top will help us help you.

                        I don't think you are eating enough fat. Especially if you have been taking the yolk out of the egg.

                        You aren't supposed to avoid carbs completely, just to get most of them from veggies. But you will also get them from cheese and cream and sour cream.

                        So some ideas:

                        1. Are you using mayo and is your tuna packed in oil? If not, they should be.

                        2. Are you using salad dressing on your veggies? Cheese on that broccolli, or butter? If not, you should be.

                        3. Are you eating only 2 eggs for breakfast? Nothing else? Mix those eggs with cheese for an omelette, consider adding one egg, or make devilled eggs. With mayo.

                        4. Are you snacking between meals? Good idea to get something high in fat and protein mid-morning and mid-afternoon.

                        Are you eating enough calories? What is your basal metabolic rate? Are you consuming about that same number of calories? What are your fat, protein and carb percentages? Do you use Fitday.com to record your foods and keep track? if not, do so!
