    Re: I'm Starting Over!

I like to keep a bar in my car, I do some crisis intervention and I have found myself out at a situation where I would not be able to leave for food and the only option is donuts or something the family is eating. In a year and a half I have only dont that once, but thats beside the point. My point is I have never found an induction legal bar. They all have soy, nuts or other non induction ingredients. As soon as it is cool enough I will keep nuts instead of the bars but in Texas heat they go rancid.

Although I love a good debate, I have to agree that if you are losing weight and eating health food then good for you, we just need to discuss this in another forum, not this one set up for "by the book Atkins".

The shakes and bars come with two, no THREE problems:

      1. They contain sugar alcohols and other carby things that are not permitted on induction.

      2. They can cause cravings OR, even worse, can stall your weight loss.

      3. They become a substitute for your sugar addiction instead of helping you to overcome it.

        Re: I'm Starting Over!

As others have stated, in the book, Atkins meant processed bars and shakes as an emergency item, rather than an everyday item. As an everyday item, you're not getting the whole foods and weaning yourself from the sugars and starches and could reawaken some of the cravings, or never let them cease in the first place.

Remember, this WOE was begun before there were processed, low-carb foods for sale on the market!

If Dr Atkins could do this minus the shakes and the bars, so can we.

        Excellent discussion, everyone!

          Re: I'm Starting Over!

          Hi, Finelly!

I don't know that I have a position on the veggie issue. I've occasionally eaten more veggies than 3 cups. I call it "hovering over OWL".

I DO know that we don't all go by the book on this forum. Just an example: there are several of us at any given moment who are either doing Atkins vegetarian, or are limiting their meat.
ADBB 14-day induction is a bit of a mini boot camp of sorts.

We kick butt in order to get it into shape!

As such, hovering over Owl is cool AFTER the first 14 days. For the first 14, it has to be by the book.

Regarding people with special needs/vegetarians/etc who are the exception and not the rule: those people are the exception and not the rule. *LOL* The book was written for the rule and not the exception, so where we have people who are special needs dieters, we have to, by necessity, address them differently.

But you probably knew all that and wanted me to type so much that I'd forget to move my sprinkler and make my lawn soggylicious!

          Drat!

            Re: I'm Starting Over!

BArs are the death of many Atkins newbies. As for me any food that has its own section on the Atkins website all about what to do when that food stalls your Atkins will never get an endorsement from me for use.

if you read your chapter 11 part about the convenioence foods ie bars, he said in an emergency they were okay. BUT what kind of emergency can it be that you can go to the store buy the bars and not be able to by something else on the list or as in Lauren's case not be able to pack in the car a cooler with Atkins induction acceptable or whatever phase of the plan you are on emergency rations. they make fanny packs now with insulations so there really isn't any place you can be that it could be an emergency that you could carry a bar that you couldn't have carried Atkins acceptable induction foods too.

give up your bars there really aren't any magfical mythical noncounting counting carbs. yes those carbs in the bars that they say you can subtract other then the fiber are delayed impact so they don't fall in the testing range as impact but as you just found out their do hit later and if you happen to be eatting another meal when they hit you have just booosted your sugar load and can't understand why you meal that yesterday was fine is suddenly a craving feast.

            Happy low carbing.

              Re: I'm Starting Over!

Thanks for your help! I did not realize he meant for emergency purposes. TO me it seemed he was just adding them to the list, but very vaguely, and I did not understand that since everything else is so cut and dry.
