  • Somebody help me......

please. I'm into my second week of a clean induction, I've dropped 12 lbs and everything has been going great. Then last night I was hit with a craving for pistachio ice cream so bad I could barely stand it. Thing is I don't even care for ice cream much and when I did eat it I preferred vanilla. Today the craving is still strong and I can't seem to get away from it. What the heck is going on with my body? Has anyone else experienced something like this and what did you do?

Nothing that I'm aware of, at least nothing out of the ordinary. But I guess sometimes I'm not always aware of those things until afterwards. No I haven't cheated, but is there anything I can do when this kind of thing happens? It's driving me crazy. More vitamins of some sort maybe? Thanks I appreciate any help.

any supplement you took would have a delayed dow the road fix so that will not fix you immediately.
Dr Atkins recommended deepening your ketossi for immediate help so eat a fat if you were hungry.
if not try distraction. the old drink water wait 30 min and see thing works well cause you keep repeating it until you are running to the potty so much you don't even remember that icecream.

then there is exercise which can make some immediate good for you brain chems that should help. Some folk use yoga or meditation to distract them. read a book come to ADBB and talk away your wants works for many.

try keeping a food journal and add the why when what where and anything else you can thinkof like where were you eating what did you eat what did you want to eat who was wth you how did you feel before during and after eating. then you can see triggering patterns.

If you don't mind a gross method .. try this: imagine pigging out on whatever you are craving and then getting sick with the flu because of it. Somehow the thought of hurling kills cravings for me!

what works for me.....DRINK WATER until the craving goes away (usually 15 min until a craving disappears)..It even worked with me while I was trying to quit smoking...I swear to you it works!

I find that a high fat snack can stop an urge like that. A devilled egg or a piece of cheese. Others have said that eating a dill pickle will stop the craving b/c your body doesn't know the difference between pickles and whatever you are craving. I've never tried that. But most low carbers will tell you to have some fat so try that next time, along with the other suggestions above of course.

                    Re: Somebody help me......

Thank you all for all of your suggestions. What has actually worked is a combination of just about all of the above. First I drank a big ole glass of water. Better, but not gone. Ttdriver thinking about how bad I would feel if I ate oh....2 gallons or so helped but I could use some work on the visualization I guess. I'm not finally sure what worked but I ate a cheeseburger (sans bun) and then took a longer walk than I ever have, then I had a pamper me party. Bubblebath, pedicure, manicure, just a take me away Calgon experience. I'm feeling much better now I'm not in a "going berserk craving mode". And I can handle anything that slaps me upside the head again. 2big I think as many times as I have heard you say exercise, exercise, exercise I'm a believer. Diversion seems to do the trick. Sirine, ladyinred, pjtmay, Elizellen, thank you so much for caring what happens to an almost backsliding newbie. You guys are the best.

good for you now seriously try the journalling you will be amazed whenyou find your trigger. oneof mine was celery and another was successfully avoiding a cheat eating out with my high carb sister. Shocking to me and I would never have guessed in a millionyrs that was going to be it.

YES!!!!!!! Good for you! I love that! As 2big suggested a journal is a very helpful tool in these situations. What I do is picture the food I'm craving (rare now...it does get better!) covered in something disgusting...like insects or boogers. It's totally gross but it always helps! Lol! Also I'll look at my before and afters and think "Do I really want to go back to that?". Good for you for getting through it!

                            Re: Somebody help me......

In the beginning it can be difficult to learn how to read the signals your body is sending you...which is why we recommend to have a drink of water in case your body is mistaking thirst for hunger.
There may also be other issues...emotional issues...For instance, when I started the diet, I automatically thought that diet=deprivation, so I would get a little anxious about snacking in the evening, and I would dwell on the things I wasn't allowed to eat anymore.

What worked for me was to teach my brain that if it sent me craving signals, that I would feed it, but I would only feed it Induction-friendly foods. If it told me to eat cake, I wouldn't indulge the sweet tooth, I'd eat an egg instead...or veggies with dip, and so on. After a while, I think I started to understand that when I had a wild craving for *insert bad carb food here* it more meant that I was bored or restless, rather than hungry. I would literally talk out loud to myself (alone though...don't do this in the middle of the grocery store...people get weird about that) and tell myself that I was fine, that I didn't need those empty calories and that if I really was hungry I had a whole fridge full of good food to eat.

It'll get better...I used to have an endless loop of my favourite pre-Atkins treats play over and over and over in my head for a long time. There's still an echo of that, but it's no big deal now...especially since I've found yummy Atkin's legal treats to make for myself if I should choose to indulge.
