  • Sodium is evil

So anyways tonight my husband wanted to go a chinese buffet, I begged and pleaded with him not to go, but he insisted, and we were out and about and I was very hungry. So I tried to do my best and I got steamed chicken with steamed mixed vegetables. But when I got my food, to add some flavor I put some soy sauce on it. I did have some of the sauce from the vegeatbles but I asked them to put it on the side, since I thought that it would have tons of carbs in it. Anyways I read on the soy sauce bottle that it had like 930mmgl of sodium, and I started freaking out thinking that I am now going to gain tons of weight because I hate soy sauce. Am I?? I dont want to gain weight, and if I do will it just be temporary? Is sodium a major no no?? Also if this was you and you were put in this situation what would you have eaten? I did try to do the best of my ability at the given time. Thanks for listening

relax sodium is a vital nutriant folk just eat too much of it you had about 1/4 of the daily amount you should from all sources if you had a full serving of it.

Just keep drinking your water and you will flush any excess sodium out of your system over the next day.

    Happy low carbing.

Reeeeelaxxxxx. It's ok to use soy sauce (I often put it on broccoli and chicken to spice up a stir fry) even with the sodium content. If it's not an everyday thing, you are fine. Sodium isn't great for you, but it's not the worst thing in the world either and should especially be avoided by women around TOM (but I'm sure you know that).

If you had eaten a lot of salt at dinner would you freak out the same way? Probably not. Water weight gain is temporary and often drinking MORE water will help flush your system; but, like everything else, gain will depend on your body structure and sensitivity to sodium. Keep yourself off the scale and don't let a number which naturally fluctuate determine how you feel about your progress or the choices that you make.

I avoid buffets at all cost, just as a general rule. I don't like food others have been pawing thru and sitting out all night. When getting a serious Chinese craving, however, I like Mu Shu Chicken with no pancakes, brown sauce on the side for my own indulgence (much like salad dressing).

Eating soy sauce on foods is probably no worse than eating dill pickles--some foods are higher in salt than others. Like the others said, just be sure and drink plenty of water. You may have a 1b or 2 in retension if you weigh everyday--but it is very temporary.

I thought soy was a no-no during induction?? Maybe I'm wrong. I hope so I love soy. P.S. If you like soy sauce but hate the sodium try Bragg liquid aminos. Just like soy sauce but only 110 mgs per serving. It also is not fermented like soy and has no alcohol, perservitives, addititves or chemicals. $6 will get you a nice, big bottle at your health food store.

One thing I notcie when I HAVE TO eat out that the foods are prepared with way to much salt. When I cook I am real careful with the salt. I retain fluid like a sponge.

I suggest that you taste the food first, it may have enough salt without adding more yourself. Just my 2 cents!
