  • are atkins shakes and bars ok for induction?

I am making my menus for the induction for when I start next week. Does any one know if the atkins advantage shakes as well as the bars ok for induction phase?

I have looked at the site www.genaw.com some of them I will use but I still need a bit of help for the menus. If anyone knows of any other sits that would be wonderful. I can't wait to start.

I found this on the atkins web site. I want to make sure Phase one is induction right?
http://www.atkins.com/recipes/recipe...gory=phase_one I just want to make sure I can use these recipes.
    thanks

Re: are atkins shakes and bars ok for induction?

I am by no means anywhere near as knowledgeable as many on this site, but I just happened to be in Wal-Mart today and looked at the ingredient list on the Atkins bars. They are very high in Carbs. I think I read a few days ago, on this forum, that they are NOT recommended for induction; even for OWL I think they are too high.
The shakes are much lower in Carbs (don't remember the numbers) but I think even they are too high for induction. Most of the carbs for induction are to be derived from the vegs we are allowed to eat.
    Hope this helps.

Hi Bombie and welcome. Read the Sticky's in the Induction forum. There will be legal foods posted. You really want to avoid the shakes and bars during induction, and probably after induction as well. They tend to stall people and also are just filled with junk. It will be best to plan ahead, buy only real foods and prepare stuff ahead of time. Linda's Low Carb recipes is a great source for recipes and she has clearly marked the ones safe for induction. You can find her link in the recipe forum. The real key to having a successful induction is having food always ready. If you make bacon, make the whole package, if you hard boil an egg, do the whole carton. If you cook a meat, cook extra so you will be able to heat it up again. You get the idea. Good Luck!

I personally wouldnt reccomend them, Most of us stick to the strictest induction rules that are posted in the induction forums.
        Good luck!!

They stalled me my second week
          Look at my stats
I gained when I was eating them.
I thought it was okay because on the Atkins website they say it is, but like the others have said, the very first thing you should do is read the ingredients to see if they are on the list of foods you can eat on induction...the bars aren't.
          Hope that helps

My advice would be to stay away from the bars and shakes. I would (and do) go by DANDR 2002 and ignore the Atkins website. They've changed some things since he died. I mean, just look at their "induction menu". They have low carb tortillas and wasa bread listed in them. Those things are NOT induction friendly. I even emailed them about it the other day and this is what I got back...

"We understand your frustration and we are working on updating our menus and food lists now that our low carb baked products have been discontinued."

Umm that sounds to me like.. Gee our LC products weren't selling so we're going to go back to the way it's SUPPOSED to be. Duh!

Re: are atkins shakes and bars ok for induction?

Atkins Nutritionals is a business and have developed policies that are a long way from the late Dr A's principles. They are focused on making a buck rather than on your health. The bars, even the ones claimed to be induction friendly, are mostly filled with ingredients that are not on the induction acceptable food list. Steer clear of them is my advice... at least until you are close to maintenance. Dr Atkins advised their use in emergencies only.

If you stick to the plan and try to eat "real" and unprocessed foods in the correct amounts (feed your hunger and no more), you won't go far wrong.

Welome to our ADBB family, Bombie
Congratulations on making your plans before starting induction - one phrase that one of our members had in her signature when I joined ADBB was
'Failing to plan is planning to fail'

As the others have said you will need to check the actual list of ingredients on those bars and shakes and even the recipes to make sure ALL the ingredients are listed on the allowed list of foods for induciton.

Here on ADBB is a wallet sized list you can print out and have with you when you buy food or order when out so you can make sure you stick to the induction rules.

Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
