  • Veggie question!

Okay, on the Atkins website, it lists the Induction okay veggies. I am right to think the first list is 2 cups and the second list is 1 cup. Is that cooked or un-cooked. I haven't gotten the book yet so I am going purely by internet. Thanks!

    Re: Veggie question!

The book is a MUST read if you want to do it as accurate as possible. I ordered the book before starting Atkins but took about 3 weeks to get it and by the time I started reading it and got to the induction chapter, I was already in my 2nd week on OWL. I released just then that I didn't do induction real well. So, here is some stuff I fell into and hopefully can be used as tips to help you out doing a clean induction.

All of this stuff are in the book and can be found on different posts in this forum.

    * As for the veggies, I go by uncooked. By the way, you have a total of 20 *net* carbs. Which is, net carbs = carbs - fiber.

    * Stick with the acceptable food list, if it is not mentioned there, then just simply don't touch.. Not all veggies are ok for induction. Stuff like potatoes, carrots, etc have high glycemic value and can spike your blood sugar. I didn’t know that when I was doing Atkins and was treating carrots like any other veggie.. WRONG.. it is not!
But thanks for this awesome forum. People here never hesitate to help.

    * Aspartame (Contained in products like Equal) and most other artificial sweeteners can stall your weight loss. Aspartame is mentioned in the book as a no-no. Most diet drinks, gum, and other diet products have aspartame. Try to stay away. Splenda or saccharin (Like Sweet & Low) are the preferred Atkins sweeteners (they still can stall weight loss with some people).

    * If you see a product with “0 carbs”, this is still not necessarily a good product to take on induction. Lookup the ingredients, it will still need to be induction-legal. A fruit juice like with 0 or 1 carb is not legal on induction (fell into that myself).

    * Lookup the hidden carbs, again lookup the ingredients, ALL ingredients have to be legal to the rung your are in.

    * No caffeine please. If you are a coffee drinker, go with decaf.

    * Water, water, water. Drink as much as you can, you need to have at least 64oz + 8oz for every 25lbs you are looking to loose.

Hope this helps Jen. Others, please list down other pointers if I you think I missed something..

      Wow, Einy.

Thanks for being such a great support already! I did order the book and I am waiting on it. However, I wanted to start now. I kind of felt like it was now or never, you know? I will keep refering to your post as time passes.

I couldn't have picked a worse time though! Christmas?! The goodies, the food, the family gatherings?! I must have been insane. But I felt like if I waited until "after" there would always be something to wait until "after"...know what I mean?

I did go to my daughters ballet open house and there was a TON Of sweets. I managed to politely say no, which amazed me!

I am scared. Until I get the hang of do's and don'ts and good food I can eat, I am freaked out. LOL.

Thanks for listening to me vent! I just have to come up with some Induction snacks while my family is here Christmas Eve so I don't go for theirs. Ugh.

        Re: Veggie question!

i think knowing the carb count of every veggie helps, the rule is 20 and under net carbs with 15 coming from the salad list. every veggie has different amounts both cooked, raw, boiled, steamed. fitday.com and http://www.thecaloriecounter.com/ are really good.

            Re: Veggie question!

Yes, at least 60% of these 20 carbs have to come from veggies. Another thing I may have missed "exercise".. You need to introduce some exercise into your daily routine. Try the "Exercise Challenges" section of the forum.. Very inspiring.

And yes.. I know exactly what you mean Jen.. I did almost the same thing.. It is either now or never.. Also started before the holidays.. I started 11/13/07, which was 9 days before the thanksgiving.. but you know what.. I think it is better that way, your second week of induction I think is the best time for you to resist any food.. your appetite is at lowest, you start to see progress already and you feel like any cheating you do can spoil the amazing results you are already seeing..

I have been on this woe for a little over than a month, and already feel bad that I didn't know about it before. You will see how amazing it is. It is not a diet.. It is really a way of life.

              Re: Veggie question!

Einy has given you some great advice, Jen :clappng:

There is a 'wallet-sized' induction list you can print out to have with you when ordering/buying food here that one of our members drew up for us
              http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=3982

Another member used to have a great motto in her signature which applies to us all particularly on those first few weeks
Failing to plan is planning to fail
So always try to plan in advance your strategies for keeping to the allowed list of foods so you dont get caught out unawares!

BTW if you are going to have to eat out see if you can look at the company website before you go so you can work out which items to order to stay inside the rules!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Check out our Low Carb Recipes website and add to it!!

So I am right in thinking meat, fish, eggs, have little to know carbs and can be ate liberally? So long as it isn't marinated or cooked in something it shouldn't be?

Eggs have about 1 carb per egg.

And "liberally" doesn't mean 'eat to the exclusion of' or 'okay to stuff yourself with it'. It means you may eat these foods if you want, but you only eat to satisfy your hunger.

you might want to see if your public library has a copy of the book. That will help you much in the long run. It's very important to do the first 2 weeks correctly because your weight loss during that time determines how you plan the rest of your Atkins.

I actually ordered the book and am waiting on it. However, I did not want to wait to start. So I am getting most my information online until then. Plus a mother who did it.

Hope you are loving your new WOL. My big thing I did wrong before I got the book was not eating enough fat. Butter and Olive Oil are my favs now.
