Atkins or other low-carb bars and shakes

I know these items are not on the acceptable foods list but they are on the sample 2 week meal plan http://www.atkins.com/articles/atkin...tion-meal-plan for induction on the Atkins website. They are spread out over the 2 weeks and not back to back in days.

    EDITED:
Please read next cpl posts. I was under the impression that they were acceptable since the bars themselves from that company say appropriate for Induction Phase 1. I am thouroughly confused now.

The ingredients in the bars arent on the acceptable foods list, therefore not acceptable during the induction phase - just a money making scam that will stall your weightloss.

Remember that sugar alcohols react differently on different people, your formula doesnt necessarily work for everyone, if the bars dont make you sit on the toilet for the rest of the day then you must count the sugar alcohols.

Moral of the story? Bin the bars.

Just to add to what Emma has written.

It's been the collective experience of ADBB that the bars, shakes, etc. etc. have the tendency to stop or slow weight loss. Therefore, we do not recommend them during the first 14 days of Induction because your weight loss results during these first 14 days will help you determine how to plan the rest of your Atkins and help you understand what kind of metabolism you have.

Yes, we know that Atkins Nutritionals sells them. Yes, we know that Atkins Nutritionals says they are okay to eat/drink. But we also know how these products can effect people.

So if you want to use them, it's up to you. However, just be aware of the experience of others before you make that decision.

I agree with what Emma and Not2Late said. They can make you stall with your weight loss. For me, this WOE is about killing my sweet tooth, not feeding it. I consider them a frankenfood and steer clear!

I am thinking you guys are absolutely right because:

          1) I did stall right after I started having one breakfast bars
          2) they don't taste all that good anyway
          3) I did find that I can not have caffiene or sweets because it just spikes me and makes me want to eat like a horse
          4) I am finding they should only be used in emergencies (note: should not allow yourself to get in this position)
          5) the bars a OVER PRICED

          FTW

Thanks guys. I just now need to work on getting rid of the urges to eat just because i can. This is why I feel I am addicted to food and not just sweets and carbs. I think i am addicted to food in general as no matter if I am full or sated I still want more.

Re: Atkins or other low-carb bars and shakes

I can understand your confusion Mirya - it is confusing.

This is the deal. Originally Dr Atkins did not recommened any of these kind of foods. Anyway, there were none back in the day.

In the 2002 book he does make some mention of eating them, but NOT during induction. However he started to become involved in the production of low carb food only reluctantly, when he came to understand that people were demanding easy snack options. And possibly because (he was only human after all!) there was a lot of money to be made, and if he didn't get a part of it others surely would.

But then Dr A died. Subsequently a lot of upheaval took place in the company Atkins Nutritionals, and the upshot was that it is no not associated with either the Atkins family or with any of the people who worked with Dr A when he was alive. It is a purely commercial, non-medical entity, which exists to make money.

Lots and lots of new products have been introduced, many of then totally different from the ones that were around when Dr A was alive. Plus the guidelines for eating this way, as set out by Atkins the company, are NOT the same as the ones which Dr A wrote about.

That is why this board recommends that you stick to the 2002 book, which was the last one written in its entirity by Dr A himself - not the Atkins website, not any books written subsequently by other authors on behalf of the company. Some of those books, and indeed quite a lot of the site, are little more that marketing messages in disguise, designed to move product not to help you.

I've seen many people come here and pooh-pooh this notion, insistant that since Atkins Nutritionals make these things and say they are ok, then they must be. I've seen the same people either leave, or eventually stop using these products because they were either stalling them or giving them terrible cravings or making them sick. Some people get away with the odd one as a treat, once they are further down the line from induction. For others even the odd one makes them sick and they are out altogether.

My major worry is that by using such products people are not dealing with one of the main factors that got them into this big fat mess in the first place - breaking their addiction to sweet things.

For me, this concern meant I did induction very strictly, no desserts of any kind, even so-called 'legal' ones. It was hard, but well worth it. Apart from anything else it retrained my taste buds, so that now berries or melon, which I can eat at this point, seem incredibly sweet, much more so than they did before. Changing my taste buds in this way feels like a very good long term investment in controlling my weight. I know other people, who are further along than me, now eat grapefruit without any sweetner and find it sweet enough.

Wow I'm glad I came across this one! a couple weeks ago I had like three atkins shakes a day... :-/ maybe that's why I gained some weight back??? OH well! lol they really were disgusting. Is it okay to use some of Linda's low carb dessert recipes even though I'm on the induction???
                  Thanks!

I use to drink an Atkins shake each day and didn't know they could stall me. Now that I have cut out all that stuff I am doing much better.
