    Re: Stomach pains?

I have three individuals here at my office who have been on Atkins for about 6 months now and every single one of them has had their gall bladders removed. They all said that their doctor (all diffent I might add) said it was because the way the were eating and that their gall bladder was trying to keep up with the processing of the food and was working to hard. The doctors blamed it on the Atkins diet.

      Re: Stomach pains?

I think it is more the case that eating Atkins allows the stones to be released rather than that Atkins eating causes stones.

AS far as I know the sones are formed while eating a lowfat det.

        Re: Stomach pains?

        Hi All

I have had the same problem for the last two weeks and its getting worse and more frequent (been on atkins for 6 weeks) and am now about to take myself off to the Dr's. I have pains right across the middle of my tummy usually worse just after eating and feels like i've been winded for about and hour or so and its very very painful and is getting more frequent. I need to lay on the floor and rub my stomach (which I can't do at work) and this helps but doesn't relieve the pain. If I take 2 strong painkillers the pain subsides but doesn't go feels like my intestines are in knots.

I am not constipated go every other day with no probs, am drinking plenty of water lots of veg and salads and not preg or have period pains so non of them.

The only thing different on this diet is that I am now on high fat and I use splenda instead of my usual sweetners.

        Any ideas please.

          Hi Ally,

I'll give your question a shot, but I think you should definitely see a doctor.

Did you try lowering your fat intake a little? Dr. Atkins wrote that people with gallbladder disease "may have to slowly increase the level of fat they are eating, according to their own tolerance".

Also, I'm not sure if this would help, but what about eating smaller meals more often? Did you try this?

I hope you feel better. I have to go with Elizellen. I read the same thing Elizellen was referring to, that eating Atkins allows for the stones to be released.
We all have our individual opinions and if you are not comfy on the Atkins plan then maybe it isn't for you.
            I wish you the best.

              Re: Stomach pains?

Any major dietary change can make your gb wacky but fat seems to be a big trigger. I got my first bad attacks back in the early 80s when I was on Medifast. For me, it wasn't a matter of eating frequent tiny meals (although the doc said that might help some). I had to cut out ALL fat for six months (I was pregnant and didn't want to have in utero gall bladder surgery). This was long before I first tried Atkins.

I eventually had it out years later .I should have had it out earlier as there wasn't much left of the gb, but there was quite a pile of gravel inside. Since having it out, I have had no problems whatsoever, so if that is the diagnosis rest assured you can restart the WOE once you recuperate.
