I have been on induction for 8 days now and I have gained 3 lbs! I lost 6 lbs in 5 days and then I just started to gain. I am getting frustrated because I have no idea why. Should I be eating more fat? or more carbs? please tell me what I need to do because I want to just end the atkins!

Re: Gaining weight!!!!!
Have you seen this thread about how losing weight is not ever a steady loss http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ot-linear.html
The 'average' loss to be expected is said to be between 5% and 10% of the total amount we hope to lose, so let us know how much you are aiming at. This loss is over the whole 14 days of induciton, so wait till your 15th day and see how you did overall before changing your menu too radically. The chart in DANDR will help you work out what your likely resistance to weightloss is.
Without knowing what you are eating no-one can advise you on tweaking your food choices - we do have a special forum called 'review my menu' where you can list all the food you are eating including amounts and let others see if they can spot anything you should change.Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Re: Gaining weight!!!!!
I started off being 120lbs and then I went down to 114 and now I am 117.. i want to be at 105 but it really seems impossible no matter what diet I am doing. I have the biggest sweet tooth and I am in pastry school right now to be a pastry chef and we are making chocolates On monday and I was wondering when we are allowed to eat it? Also, if we accidentally ate something we weren't supposed to one day, is it ok if we just go back on track the next?

Re: Gaining weight!!!!!
What is your height?
Well, assuming you REALLY want to do Atkins, going back on track after a cheat is (obviously) better than staying off. But you should try to avoid cheating in the first place. It sounds a bit to me as if you are planning cheats thinking that then you just go back on Atkins for a few days and everything will be OK. Doing this will mess up your metabolism. Also, if we accidentally ate something we weren't supposed to one day, is it ok if we just go back on track the next?
Ditto to what Elizellen said. Don't weight yourself every day and keep in mind you won't lose weight every day. Yes, sometimes you will gain even though everything you do is right, but overall you will lose. You lost 3 lbs, so be happy for those."Get action. Seize the moment. Re: Gaining weight!!!!!
I am 5'1... I also had a few more questions. What happens if you do not include fat in your diet? I know if you eat 2 cups of salad and then 1 cup of broc or whatever is acceptable for one days worth of carbs, but these do not add up to at leas 15 g of carbs? Lastly, I was wondering if I could just eat all healthy protein like grilled chicken, salmon, and turkey instead of eating burgers with bacon and cheese? Will these healthy ways mess up the atkins diet for me?

Re: Gaining weight!!!!!
You should eat 20 *net* carbs per day. Take some time to read the book or at least the stickies on this board. Even if they add to 15 carbs (which they do not, at least not if you count net carbs as you are supposed to), you still have 'space' for another 5.Originally posted by v2n3ss2I know if you eat 2 cups of salad and then 1 cup of broc or whatever is acceptable for one days worth of carbs, but these do not add up to at leas 15 g of carbs?
Atkins is a high fat diet, so you are supposed to take most of your calories from fat AND most of your carbs from veggies.Originally posted by v2n3ss2What happens if you do not include fat in your diet? No one says you have to eat burgers with bacon and cheese. I haven't eaten burgers and bacon in ages, and the cheese is restricted to max. 4 oz per day during induction and rung 1 anyway. This is the most common misconception about Atkins. People imagine you have to guzzle jars of fat when following this woe. But adding 1 tablespoon of olive oil on your salad, choosing full fat cheese, chicken with skin on, fatty fish or avocado easily allow one to put the fat intake at 65%.
You wrote "all healthy protein". I don't understand why you think protein is healthy, while fat is not. From your questions I understand you don't believe Atkins to be a healthy way of eating, but just a diet that will help you shed away some pounds in no time.
You know the jokes from Radio Yerevan? Here's one.

Regarding your last question,
In principle yes, but the "ways" are not necessarily healthy if you plan to eat <20 carbs and low fat, and the diet is not Atkins.Originally posted by v2n3ss2Will these healthy ways mess up the atkins diet for me?
If you want to do Atkins, you must play by the rules. High fat intake is one of them."Get action. Seize the moment. Man was never intended to become an oyster."

Re: Gaining weight!!!!!
well this sounds alot like the problem i've been having for about 3 months now.
i started off at about 133, went down to 125, then kept gaining and losing a few pounds. so now im about 128. what worked for me for a bit was driking alot more water, coz it seems like i've been having alot of sodium, but not enough water, so i ended up retaining water.
and recently i just started to excersice, and i really love it. the scale isnt moving much either, but i dont let that get to me, and i stoped weighing my self so often.
the main thing is u will feel better about ur self, and u might see physical changes, but not neccisarly changes in numbers.
think of it as a healthy living style, and i promise you, you will see huge difference in ur sleeping, ur energy level, physical strength, eating habbits, and alot more.
oh and one more thing, someone once said to me, that its twice as hard for the smaller people to lose weight. and ur way smaller than iam.....so...dont count on it all going away fast.
good luck and happy low carbing

Re: Gaining weight!!!!!
Atkins is a high fat diet. So if you do a low fat Atkins, then you aren't really doing Atkins. Moreover if you eat low fat, and low carb, you'll most likely end up eating high protein. Dr. Atkins said that excess dietary protein is converted to glucose which is stored as glycogen and body fat. So it doesn't help you out in the long run.Originally posted by v2n3ss2 View PostI am 5'1... I also had a few more questions. What happens if you do not include fat in your diet?
Additionally, it's the fat that keeps your appetite in check between meals. That's because fat takes longer to digest than protein or carbs. So you feel fuller longer.
There are about 20 vegetables in the "salad" list. Lettuce is only one of them. So eating 2 cups of lettuce is cheating yourself in terms of carbs and in terms of nutrients.I know if you eat 2 cups of salad and then 1 cup of broc or whatever is acceptable for one days worth of carbs, but these do not add up to at leas 15 g of carbs?
Dr. Atkins wrote in the book that the majority of your daily carbs should come from vegetables. So if you are eating 10 net carbs daily, at least 6 of those carbs should be from veggies, not cream, cheese, eggs, sweetener, etc.
All proteins---poultry, fish/shellfish, pork, venison, lamb, beef, buffalo, elk, etc. ---- are acceptable on the Atkins diet. No one is "healthier" than the next. It's a common myth that Atkins is an all-you-can-eat bacon egg and cheese diet. It's not. I rarely eat burgers and I'm doing Atkins.Lastly, I was wondering if I could just eat all healthy protein like grilled chicken, salmon, and turkey instead of eating burgers with bacon and cheese? Will these healthy ways mess up the atkins diet for me?
Atkins is a very healthy way of eating: minimally processed and refined foods, no trans/hydrogenated oils, plenty of vegetables, and natural proteins. What's unhealthy is the pastry you are learning to make in school since it's basically alot of refined flour and alot of refined sugar.~Megs~

Re: Gaining weight!!!!!
As a culinary school graduate, i think you will have issues with your chefs trying to eat a certain way while in school. Especially pastry school.
I have stopped pastry work because it just isn't possible for me to do it and eat the way I have chosen. I wish you all the best, but it will be tough to be surrounded by by carbs all day in a pastry program and try to not taste anything.
I gained about 50 pounds in school. It was a rough time for me!!!!"I'm big boned" ...Um, nobody has bones that big....

Re: Gaining weight!!!!!
In re-reading your posts it looks like you haven't read the Atkin's book.
You can't do the diet if you don't know what it is. You really need to read it.
Also, I don't want to sound negative, but a pastry chef doing Atkins is asking for trouble. If you "cheat" and you are eating fatty foods, but aren't in ketosis, then wow, you are really asking for weight gain."I'm big boned" ...Um, nobody has bones that big....

Re: Gaining weight!!!!!
Chef Kevin, I have a question about "tasting" foods. When I cook at home and I taste whatever I'm cooking, I taste a teaspoon or less, because I'm tasting it for proper seasoning, etc. I'm not eating. What is a "tasting" size in culinary school?~Megs~

Re: Gaining weight!!!!!
after lab where I went to school, that was our meal for the day and we all had a plate. We had to eat at least a bite of everything. Usually 10-12 dishes.
It was quite a bit of food. Usually VERY good!!!
It was a full traditional meal, protein, starch, veg, and some type of dessert.
When I was in pastry, it was a flippin nightmare of carbs. 6-7 Types of bread, 2-3 types of sweet dough pastry (danish, cin rolls, etc), multiple types of cookies, candies, etc daily. It was just pure carbs, then we all went to the labs and ate a full meal with the culinary labs. It was insane how much food we ate.
Garde Manger was also nuts. We made sausages almost daily. That was the one lab that we did very few desserts. It was mostly product reutilization.
The amount of food is nuts and we were watched and graded by what we ate. Then the chefs would ask us questions and opinions about the dishes. God help you if you didn't have an answer."I'm big boned" ...Um, nobody has bones that big....

I had a Diabetic friend that swore that she absorbed sugar through her hands while baking...
For months she could not figure out what was the problem, until she started tracking her daily habits and was able to determine that as the only reoccurring source.
Maybe something to also consider...

Re: Gaining weight!!!!!
Did you take your measurements before starting?. You may be gaining muscle mass. Muscle weights 3 times as much as fat so you gain weight but look slimmer. Do I make sense?Originally posted by v2n3ss2 View PostI have been on induction for 8 days now and I have gained 3 lbs! I lost 6 lbs in 5 days and then I just started to gain. Also, I would avoid going off-track or cheating while in induction. I think the idea behind induction is to get your metabolism used to burn fat for fuel and if you cheat in between you may never reach that point.
Also since in induction you are eating lots of fats if you suddenly add carbs with high glycemic index to the mix (sugar, flour, pastries, etc), the flood of insulin will grab all that fat and store it.
