  • New to Atkins

    Hello!

I just started day 3 of Atkins. So far so good. I just used a Ketone stick...it hasn't changed from negative. How long does ketosis take??

Also, the shakes and bars are not legal in induction correct?? I see they say all phases but I also see the HIGH HIGH carb content and they contain things like milk, soy, etc.

    Thanks!

It can take a few days to get into ketosis. In any case, the ketostix might still not change color since they are only measuring the concentration of excess acetoacetate spilled over into the urine. Look also for physical signs of ketosis such as sweet/bad breath, metallic taste in your mouth, change in the smell of urine and/or sweat, increased energy, decreased appetite.

The carbs are high in the bars because some of them come from sugar alcohols, which everyone metabolizes differently (so some of us have to count those as net carbs). Besides containing ingredients which are not on the acceptable foods list, they are also known to stall or slow down weight loss for many people, as we have often seen around the Board.

Great to have you here. Good job reaching day three! How are you doing today?
It took me three days for ketosis. Of course, everyone is different.
        149.8/no weigh/ 119

        1st goal: 139 (earlier weight)
what the rungs mean to me:
        rung 1 - more veggies
rung 2 - dairy (some milk in coffee)
rung 3 - seeds, nuts (mostly sprinkled on salads)
        rung 4 - berries, melon
        rung 5 - wine -
        rung 6 - beans, hummus
        rung 7 - other fruits
rung 8 - carrots/ potatoes (nah, prolly not)
rung 9 - whole grains (fresh Dutch breads...)
        Major Goal - 128 lbs/ healthy range
        (on to pre-maintenance)

          Re: New to Atkins

          Hi Everyone!

Thanks for the resposnes. My ketone stick today showed moderate..a nice dark red. I was glad to see that; I was getting frustrated!

I am also glad to verify that the shakes/bars are not appropriate for phase 1..i didn't think they were!

Any suggestions on creative foods to eat on phase 1?

Kk - the color on your stick shows you are in keotsis but the amount of color has nothing to do with keotsis -- you're either in or not in keotsis. The darker the color the more dehydrated you are -- try drinking more pure water daily.

The recipe sites are a helpful way to make your meals more creative – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

Not really. It's true that dehydration might be a reason for dark color on the ketostix. But one can also get darker stix if, for example, she consumes short and medium chain triglycerides (e.g. coconut oil, butter). Exercising might also cause darker ketostix sometimes.

That being said, everybody should make sure they drink plenty of water. This is not always easy, especially in the beginning, as many of us didn't like water before starting Atkins.

Welcome to our ADBB family kkstar
I am sending you a rep point for actually reading the list of ingredients and working out that the lowcarb products are not all induction-legal
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
