No, it is not necessary to count calories as long as you don't have a tendency to overeat, snack for the sake of snacking, etc. Those who have a problem with portion control and with recognizing hunger signals sometimes like to keep their calories in check though, because although counting is not necessary, overeating will lead to stalls or weight gain.

As Dr. Atkins explained in DANDR, we should only eat when hungry or when 6 hours have passed since our last meal. When eating, we should eat until satisfied, not full or stuffed. Also, the majority of your net carbs should come from vegetables, which means you can't eat 30 eggs per day. So all these things set a limit on the amount of meat and eggs you can eat.

By the way, remember Atkins is a high fat, moderate protein, low carb diet, so you don't want to overeat protein (e.g. from meat) as it can be converted into glucose.

Yes, parmesan cheese is allowed during Induction. Cheese is limited to 3-4 oz per day.

Oops, forgot to add. Some meats are limited. Organ meats, oysters and mussels are limited to 4 oz per day as they have some carbs. Other shellfish also has carbs, but the carb content is lower than in oysters and mussels so there is no limit on them as long as you follow all the Rules of Induction.

We follow the 2002 DANDR book it would be very beneficial to buy a copy so you know what you’re doing. (check www.half.com or www.amazon.com for a cheap copy - mine was under $5.00 with shipping).

Here is a little information I hope will help get you started.
*Before you start take your measurements and get on the scale so you have accurate numbers to start with - don't weigh again until the end of induction - there are too many variables daily and hourly that can cause your weight to change, so weighing at the end of induction is what Dr. Atkins suggested.
*Eat a variety of meats, cheeses and vegetables. Also make sure you get your fats, carbs and protein in daily.
*Drink plenty of pure water (nothing added ***– see below for more info).
        *Take your supplements and exercise

Check the stickies (information posts) at the top of this page – it’s a condensed version of the DANDR book. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/

Make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
        Filtered water
        Mineral water
        Spring water
        Tap water

*** Crystal Lite, sugar free teas, sugar free kool-aid & diet sodas do not count they are chemically enhanced and most include aspartame (also not allowed on Atkins) – PURE water is the only thing that counts toward your daily water intake. If you need a “flavor” in your water float a lemon or lime slice on top of your water

The recipe sites are a helpful way to make your meals more enjoyable – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

              Hi!
It IS confusing, I agree. I think the reason you see so much written about calories is that many of us use food logging websites that as well as working out how many carbs we eat also tell us how many calories we ate, so without wanting to know it we do know how many we are eating.

Some people feel that as they approach their goal weight they do need to restrict their calories, but not all of us by any means.

In fact one good thing about knowing how many calories your daily menus work out at is to make sure you are eating ENOUGH food and work out how to eat more if the appetite suppression of being in ketosis is making you eat too little

So concentrate on eating up to 20 net carbs, mostly from your veggies and you won't go far wrong

The only limit on meat or eggs is your own body - eat when you are hungry and only enough to satisfy your hunger!

As for cheese there IS a limit on that - 3-4 ounces a day for all 'aged' cheeses, which includes all hard cheeses and some soft ones like cream cheese and brie/camembert etc.

I like using parmesan as you don't need to add much shredded parmesan to a dish to get a good 'cheesy' taste!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
