My opinion is that the initial 14-day induction is the time to break habits and addictions, and therefore soda shouldn't be on the menu, but lots and lots of water should. Later on, if you want to occasionally have a Diet Rite, then that's okay as long as you stay within your sweetner limits.

Oh, and as long as you don't go wild, it won't affect your ketosis...

I agree with softnred on the breaking bad habits etc. Just remember to count that in your daily sweetener allowance (3 servings per day as per DANDR of recommended sweeteners) and don't count it towards your water intake, which is looking good in your case.

Dito- on the above comment... but...60 lbs is alot ot lose in that short amount of time- IMHO but drink lots of water- eat like you should- and exercise nad if you dont have that goal met you will be close- set a couple of mini goal in between that so that you can celebrate(not with food) when you reach those goals.. good luck you can do this

Jetta, we just talked about you and your cravings for something sweet. As Softnred said, Induction is a time to address your addiction to sweets/carbs...so avoid soda for at least the first two weeks, or better yet, beat the sugar demon and give it up altogether.

You keep asking about what sweet things you can have, and you keep getting pretty much the same answer about conquering the sugar demon that's riding on your back. Think about it.

I agree with Moochiechat, but in all due respect Moochichat, we are still learning in this forum and im sure you had the hardest time too going without sugar.Everyone is going at there own pace, and although Atkins teaches us to fight our cravings, we are still alound to have some treats now and then.Im on Day 9 of induction and every few days ive been having some whipped cream and spleda or a creamy coffee (decaf) with spleda. This had actually helped me to feel better about the diet and therefore i have been very successful in my first week.So bare with us Moochiecat.I know you care about us and only want the best for us, but we should also be allowed to treat ourselfs as we are only human, and Doctor Atkins does allow it.I agree that Jetta need to get into the diet a bit more and learn more about her cravings, but this is the whole point of induction! We need to learn and the only way is by making mistakes and putting them right. :hug

Everything you say is spot on, Gillybaby, and I apologize if I come across very cut and dried sometimes.

If anyone knows about beating the sugar demon, it's me, and I know what its like to constantly think about sweets but know I'm not allowed to have them. I mourned for months about not having sweets anymore, and it took me a long time before I let myself have legal treats.

I also know that it's very liberating to not revolve my day around my sweet treats anymore and I urge everyone to deal with this early on if you find you are focussing too much on sweet things.
Sweet things are one of the main culprits for getting many of us overweight in the first place, right?

Having said that, yes, there are Induction legal treats you can make for yourself at home, and of course I'd rather see people have those than do a full on cheat.

Be very aware of portion control, and be aware of whether you are using them the same way lots of us used our sweet treats pre-Atkins, as an emotional crutch.

              Just trying to help. :hug

                smooch the mooch

When I first started induction I didn't want to give up coffee and I didn't want to give up equal. it was a BIG deal to me. I remember Moochiecat, and several other good Atkineers telling me it was important to give it up and to follow induction to the letter. Boy was I mad! And stubborn! :nono :raving

I thought Moochicat and some of the other monitors were really mean and strict - too strict.

I didn't want to do give up coffee - but I took it on faith. Moochiecat has been around the Atkins block a few times - she obviously knows what she is doing. So I gave up the coffee. But it was hard. Harder than all the rest.

And what I learned was how addicted I was to coffee. It was a major drug for me. It was especially bad for my diabetes - giving me extreme ups and down. I feel so much better without it. :yes

As for the equal - who needs it? I weaned myself to Splenda, which tasted weak to me at first, then I weaned myself to Stevia. Which is wonderful. And now Stevia is the only sweetner I use, and it is better for me because it doesn't raise my blood sugar.

Now, free of my coffee addiction, I can't tell you how grateful I am that Moochiecat gave me the tough talk when I needed it. That stuff was bad for me and and bad for my WOL and she knew it.

Everyone on the forum who is strict has been through this process of breaking the addictions. When you reach the other side of your addictions, you will understand why and then you will be the one being strict. :guns

So watch yourself psychologically - look carefully at the crap you are fighting to keep - that tells you how bad the addiction truly is. The more you want to fight it, the more you need to rid yourself of it.

I adore Moochiecat now - I know that she was trying to help me. Lots of people in life will tell you what you want to hear. But the ones that really make an impact in your life are the ones that tell you what you don't want to hear.

                  Hello Jetta21

No don't take the risk. It's too early in the game to start the slippery slope of consuming products that are not allowed. If I was you I would assume no I will not get in ketosis.

Sadly you can not put a plaster over sugar fix need, there is no solution at this satge of the game :anger. Expose yourself and be sugar/caffine free and you will get over this stage once and for all.

                  Cheers

I'm having a tough time too. I had an extreme caffeine addiction. I would probably drink about 80 oz of diet cola a day, with a red bull or two thrown in and an occasional cup of coffee. It was TOUGH the first day of this diet. I just went cold turkey, and I had a splitting headache, so I allowed myself one diet shasta cola (sweetened with splenda), and that held me over. I had one the second and third day, and NOTHING the fourth day! I felt fine. I did have one today, but that's all I'll allow myself. It says in the book that the reason caffeine is bad for the diet is because it can cause cravings. I think that's right, but one a day seems to be manageable for me.
I'm 26 years old, and I lost weight on this plan in 2005. I'm getting married in August and thought this would be the way to go after making little progress on other diets. I've got 20 lbs to lose for the big day!

                      Just my two cents....

I love caffine....I'd have 2 extra large cups of coffee each morning and about half a dozen cans of diet Pepsi every day. I am on day 3 and have given all that up...and to be honest I dont crave it at all. I am trying to concentrate on keeping a structured eating habit now and dont even think about the caffine. I am actually getting use to the water now. ;-)
Keep it up and try to stay away from the soda....I bet very shortly you will forget all about it. Good luck!

Diet Rite cola is a low carb dieter but cola addicts best friend! I started drinking Diet Rite last year after about 3 weeks into induction and after about 4 weeks of induction I moved into OWL where I also put in occasional low carb breads. I would agree with everyone here that you should drink lots and lots of water, which to me when I did induction was all I craved. Water and more water was what I craved. But in a few weeks, about the time you decide to move to OWL, a 12 ounce can of Diet Rite or sometimes two cans a day shouldn't hurt you. It didn't me as I continued to lose weight for another 6 weeks very successfully. Eventually I derailed Atkins all together somehow thinking I had lost enough weight to be more active and keep it off without Atkins or something, heh.

Anyhow, Diet Rite is an awesome, good tasting cola made with Splenda that I would reccommend.... about your OWL phase. That's not far away, so just keep to the water for now. Everyone is different, and it simply isn't worth the risk of stopping your weight loss in Induction, as this might lead to frustration, and ultimate failure of an otherwise successful diet for you!

As for your goal to lose 60 pounds by June 13, it IS very possible! I wouldn't however make that the be-all or end-all goal. What I am saying is that if you do Atkins correctly, and lost 48 pounds by June 13 instead of your desired 60.... would you be mad and quit Atkins? Doubtful. Keep with it, and you'll see a DRAMATIC loss in weight and clothing size by then, GUARANTEED. How much is yet to be seen. The important thing is to keep with it, as THERE WILL BE STRETCHES OF TIME WHERE YOUR WEIGHT LOSS MAY HALT EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE STILL LOSING FAT. Don't let these points discourage you, keep it up and soon you'll notice you'll be back on the downward weight slopes again!

Keep up the good work, YOU can do it! :icondance

Jena21 hang in there and fight yourway past the sweets sireens calling your name. Once your ketosis kicks in and your appetite is controlled you should have a much eaiser time making the changes in your food type choices to allow you to make those changes that will allow you to be the healthier smaller person you so desperately want to be. Woek your Atkins do your exercise drink your water all your water and you will be a healthier smaller person by that date.

If Jetta21 were a brand new to Atkins person then I'd agree with those of you who are saying Diet rite as an occaisonal treat would be okay but for this member of our board and all her started atkins but didn't make it to day 14 attemps something is causing her to fail and give in to those high carb things. Diet soda and peanutbuter snack in Jan did her in once before.

this Atkineer needs to understand about making changes in those eatting patternes that got her in trouble. Diet soda seems to be her downfall from her one of her previous attempts at Atkins. so she should avoid it and do her Atkins without those sweets treats until she gets control of things withdraws will onlu last a few days. and then she can be the successful Atkineer all of you are.
