  • Contradictions between Allowed Foods and Menu Planner

Just wondering if someone can answer this for me.

I know from reading the books (and past experience) that things like nuts and low-carb wraps are not allowed on induction.

However, if you use the new menu planning tool on the official Atkins website and select Phase 1, it offers Atkins Bars (i.e. Peanut, Apple Crisp, Almond Cranberry, etc.) as viable options.

There are a lot of Peanuts and Almonds in those bars, as well as Apple purée and dehydrated cranberries.

But this is from the official site and those things are not allowed.

    What's the deal? Anyone?

    Thanks!

Their menus are wrong. They know it...

Bars are emergency foods. Unless you make money out of selling them.

I don't remember the site pushing so much product when Dr. Atkins was alive...

So it is a known issue then? OK...well...that would certainly explain why I gained weight following their menu plan for 10 days!! (actually weigh MORE)

I had a hunch that it might have more to do with moving product...but had hoped that perhaps they just changed their formula over the years.

I'll assume it's a big "no" on the shakes then as well?

Guess I'll just have to "kick-it ol' school" then.

        Thanks!

The WayBack Machine at archive.org shows a pretty powerful picture of the change in the Atkins website.

In 2004, the initial sample menus page didn't even reference a single Atkins product.

These days, the *first* link on the home page is to the products. Yeesh...

Re: Contradictions between Allowed Foods and Menu Planner

When I see people in the store buying Atkins products I want to run up and tell them to STOP....I actually said something to a lady and she proceeded to tell me that her mother's doctor wanted her to drink some type of shake type product to help keep her nutrition up daily....after that I decided to just keep my mouth shut.

I think it's sad how the Atkins Company sucker people into thinking the shakes and bars are good for them and allowed.....

Yes ... we never know why people are buying something.

I remember a time one of my friends saw me in the grocery store ... and she knows I do Atkins ... and yet I had flour and sugar in my grocery cart ...

The shakes and bars are "allowed" ... perhaps not as early as some people want (and do) incorporate them.

What's sad, to me, is that people think they NEED them to "do Atkins".

Re: Contradictions between Allowed Foods and Menu Planner

I just received a response from one of the "Atkins Information Agent"s:

"The amount of fruit and nuts in our bars is minimal and will not interfere with your success, because nuts are so easy to over consume, we suggest adding nuts in phase two when the appetite is better under control."

I have no intentions of following through with a reply back (I know I probably should), but instead, I will just make sure to warn all of my friends whom I have recently referred to the site.

                  Thanks all.

According to their add their caramel chocolate nut roll (allowed on induction) is "loaded with peanuts" (and peanuts is first on the ingredient list). So can it both be minimal and loaded? I have to sleep on that one.

OK...one last tidbit. The Atkins Information Agent also said I should be keeping between 1500 & 1800 Calories per day; however, the first day of Induction (following their meal plan) was almost 2200.

Ah inconsistency at its finest...but I digress.

That is all from me on this.

Thanks for all the responses. I think this forum is a great resource.

Re: Contradictions between Allowed Foods and Menu Planner

That range is nothing but a rule of thumb. There are two extremes among Atkineers: those who have the dieting mentality and undereat (or are "fooled" by the appetite suppressant effect of ketosis), and those who think it's okay to eat a dozen chicken legs in one sitting just because they have little or no carbs.

If you are losing weight the way you are eating now, then it's all good. Different people have different caloric requirements.

This was posted by Colette Heimowitz at Atkins.com:
I don’t think ones optimal calorie intake is a numerical equation. Metabolism, activity level, age, genetics, muscle mass, gender, weather, and general state of health are all variables that would affect the optimal level. So each person needs to find their own level. I go by the general rule to start with the MINIMUM of 1500 to 1800 calories for women and 1800 to 2000 calories for men and adjust from there.

I have found if you're counting calories the "rule of thumb" of 10-12 times one's current weight works well.

For you, eating 1500-1800 MIGHT be undereating.

However, you should be MORE concerned about your net carbs.

Wow atkinsgal08! Thanks for that. You know, I thought long and hard before posting my current weight, but then I thought "Oh this is a safe forum. No one will comment." WRONG...

I don't think this is the forum for me and will now do what I can to delete my account.

Too bad...everyone seemed sensitive and appropriate.
