  • This weekend....

I'm doing low carbing at least these last two weeks of classes at college before winter break (which starts on the 18th) and seeing how it pans out to decide if I'm sticking to it next semester.

This weekend I'm going home and going with my brothers and dad to the Army-Navy game in Philly... so I'm nervous. I always eat horribly when I go home, and I need help and maybe some pointers for staying on track over the weekend.

I figure treating myself to one candy bar or one pretzel at the game will not completely derail me, but I'd like to avoid it and stay strong if I can so I make it through the 14 days in tact and losing as much as possible...

Basically I'd like some ideas for good tasting stuff I can eat at home (my one chance to escape from dorm food and pre-packaged crap). I know I'll be making my own eggs and having sugar free jello with a little whipped cream, but I need other good tasting stuff to keep me strong this weekend- any help??? Thanks guys!

Food isn't a "treat". Treating yourself with food is probably what you've been doing, right? And how has that "worked out"?

If you want to avoid it, just do it.

Will you be doing your own cooking at home?

I know alot of diets say to "treat or have a cheat day" to keep fom going on a mad eating spree when you feel like your life has become just a diet and there is no pleasure left. Just remember...what is going to make you happier, that candy bar or feeling good about the way you look. That is how i keep myself from cheating.

One of Atkins rules for induction is "Eat nothing that is not on the acceptable foods list"
It is a good rule. In induction we really need to get into ketosis, we need to start finding out that we can do well without most carbs, we need to start to get rid of our food addictions. So we try to stay clean.
I understand and sympethize with your dilemma but pretzel is one of the absolute worst things you can eat. Candy bar is not much better.

That's right, and aren't all those cheat days and treats what got us overweight in the first place??? And there are so many recipes to make such great meals that are on the Atkins WOE that can satisfy you a lot more than a candy bar, so why continue past bad behavior? And there are plenty of Atkins friendly "treats" you can safely consume. It just does not have to be s Snicker's Bar.

The way I think of it now, similar to what Aleia said is, "Do I want a candy bar, or do I want to look and feel awesome?"

Quite honestly I like sweets. But I'd rather not get off track if I can avoid it.

All I've heard of so far are the minit muffin and sugar-free jello. I was wondering if anyone knew of anything specific which they had tried and liked and which are induction friendly or if I simply have to deal with being deprived of anything sweet this weekend.

That is probably the best response I've seen so far on these message boards. Thanks- that actually does help so I'll keep it in mind this weekend

I always do my own cooking at home. I understand your point, but I have to say it came across as a little patronizing rather than supportive or constructive. In either case, as I said, point taken.
And I actually got to the point I was at a couple months ago via Insulin Resistence and PCOS. I rarely go overboard when eating and used to eat a lot of whole grains, homemade fruit salads, salads, etc. I did enjoy the occasional candy bar though...

Don't get mad at me, and I hope others do not get angry, but I have to say this, so that you do not misunderstand those who are trying to help.

Please do not feel offended, but we who are serious about losing and maintaining, and helping others, will not tell you it is okay, have the candy bar. Supportive is us telling you why we do not believe the candy bar, treat, etc, will do you any good in the long run.

Our constructive support is telling people like it is. Not lying to ourself or making excuses...if you want to lose and maintain, you have to want to do it, and do it right, and you will do anything it takes. We are all here in the same weight loss boat, and here to help with the truth, not a sugar coated approval of what you want to do.

No one here is going to approve when you or others say they "have to eat this, it is my birthday, or my grandma made this pie for me, or it is this, or that"...we do not coddle the wrong way, we are here to tell you the best way. People commenting are trying to help, it is not that they have nothing else to do with their time. We/they have all gone through these challenges and lost and maintained weight. We are sharing our experiences to make it better for you. So if you or others hear things you may not like, it is not meant to offend, just to help.

                        Re: This weekend....

I'm a little confused since I've said mulitple times that I just want some recipes which others have liked in the past and are induction friendly so I can RESIST eating whatever this weekend with my family...

I don't expect to be coddled, but I wrote that because I'm not a fan of condescension either. In either case I'm not mad and I appreciate feedback. I'm quite serious about losing weight and keeping it off in either case and I'm just looking for tips which have aided people in the past.

Hi Caity Well done for thinking ahead about how you are going to cope with the weekend.

I would agree with not adding sweet treats if you can manage it. Maybe make something savoury instead so you can eat that while others are munching on candy bars.

Some ideas I have used in the past are
Mini quiches - there is a recipe in the recipes database called 'Pau's breakfast quiches' that you could adapt top suit your taste/available ingredients.

Cheese crackers - just microwave or bake small squares of cheese or piles of grated cheese till crispy.

Flax crackers - equal quantities of ground flax (linseed outside USA) and water, let thicken up then spoon onto a baking tray and flatten then bake or microwave. You can add spices or grated cheese to these.

                          Parmesan/pork rind crackers
Originally Posted by SunnySmile501 in the 'craving crispy' thread

I took one egg white and put in equal amounts of crushed pork rinds and parmesan cheese until I had a slightly stiff "dough." I put down some plastic wrap and put small balls of dough down and smashed them to about 1/8 inch thickness with the bottom of a glass (wet a little so it won't stick). They will come off the plastic wrap very easily. Then I fried them in butter slowly so they would get crispy all the way through. Yum!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Thanks! I did actually use the cheese cracker idea this weekend and it was quite good

I lapsed a little bit at the football game and ate half of a pretzel which my dad bought me for some reason (he knows I'm LCing, but also knows I love pretzels, so I guess that won out for him in the end), but I didn't do anything worse so I was quite happy.

Did have a bit more whipped cream than strictly neccessary but at least I didn't go for the brownies or chocolate bars at all!

Why did you compromise and ate half of it? Why not say, "no, dad... thanks, but I choose not to eat that"?

                              he knows I'm LCing
He thinks you are dieting and that is the message you are also sending him by choosing to eat whatever carby food (junk, in my opinion) he is offering you. Unless you are firm and explain him that you've changed your way of eating because you want to be healthier, he will never take you "LCing" seriously.
