  • End of first 14 days! Whoo-hoo!

Well, it's the end of the first 14 days on Atkins. I'm feeling pretty great, overall. I'm struggling (a little) with exercising for 30mins/4-5 days a week, and with drinking all of my water--but every day is a little better than the last.

I've lost a grand total of 6.2 pounds since officially going onto atkins (11.2 since Dec. 26 when I loosely started).

So, does that mean I'm between "high" and "average" metabolic resistance?

Chart 17.2, p. 216 (1992 ed.) says high resistance is a loss of 4 lbs and average is a loss of 8 lbs for women with 50+ lbs. to lose.

I'm a little disappointed, but nowhere near ready to throw in the towel--Any suggestions?

    I've been tracking at FitDay, and, I haven't religiously stayed <20 carbs/day...

    Thanks in advance.

Hrm. Well, I noticed large stalls in myself when I was eating things with aspartame. Also when I ate cheese (while in range of the 4 oz) it was too high for me. I've noticed sometimes you have to play with things that may cause stalls, to see what is actually causing it to be less.

Though, sometimes that's just how your body wants to work for that week or two, and it'll come around in its own time.
    Mini Goals:

    Goal 5: 160 lbs.
    Goal 6: 140 lbs.

      Congrats on the weight lost!

If you lost some pounds doing Atkins "loosely" before actually starting the plan, your weight loss during the first two weeks of "real" Atkins will likely be smaller than it would have been had you directly started Atkins.

does that mean I'm between "high" and "average" metabolic resistance?
Because of what I wrote above, you are probably overestimating your degree of metabolic resistance.

      I haven't religiously stayed <20 carbs/day
Did you go over 20 net carbs?

How many net carbs did you consume, on average? How many of them were coming from vegetables?

If you want, you could post a menu with quantities and net carbs for all foods. It's difficult to troubleshoot without a menu.

Did you also take body measurements?

Re: End of first 14 days! Whoo-hoo!

congrats on your loss yep as Georgiana said those charts are based on a person not being on a weight loss diet when they start atkins so don't worry about your metabolic resistance rating right now. they are also based on doing the plan by the book for the full 14 days so not following any part can also give a false resistance level.

Hang in there. One of the mods in 2003 didn't shed a pound during her 14 day induction but was a goalie with over 40 pouds dropped 10 months later doing nothing different then what hadn't worked during her 14 days.

          Yesterday's menu:

          Spniach quiche: 3
          Whitecastle hamburger pie: 4
          3 boiled eggs: 1.7
          Cinnamon Power Muffin: 5.8
          Ranch: 3.4
          raw salad greens: 3.5
          madison county chicken: 2

          Total net carbs: 23.4

All are low carb recipes. This is pretty typical of my days. Some days are a little higher-carb, some lower.

          Any suggestions?

          Thanks.

Over half of your net carbs should come from vegetables. This is not the case for the menu you posted.

            All are low carb recipes.
Low carb is not enough. Are they appropriate for Induction?

Eating whole, fresh foods will help a lot. Especially during Induction and even after I'm careful about eating anything I don't cook myself. I avoided any processed meats and watched very closely for added fillers/ingredients in foods. I don't have a clue what is added to meat at fast food joints and pre-cooked meats at the grocery store. Probably stuff we don't need. Even some raw meats/chicken, etc. have junk injected in them!! I was stunned the first time I read the stuff on a turkey I bought for Thanksgiving one year. Nasty stuff the inject in there!! Even in maintenance I asked questions when I ate out. Made sure a steak wasn't marinated in a anything with a sugar base, etc. Most restaurants are very forthcoming and work with you. I don't like IHOP on general principle, but they add a flour based mix into their omelets. When I used to go there, I would ask for regular eggs w/o the filler. I could tell the difference. I know it's difficult when you work and can't be home all the time to eat, but preparing and making the wisest choices is key to long term success.

                Madison County Chicken
                • 6 boneless skinless chicken breast halves
                • 3/4 teaspoon seasoned salt (MSG-free)
                • 2 tablespoons olive oil
                • 6 teaspoons honey mustard
                • 1 1/2 cups mushrooms, sliced
                • 6 slices bacon, cooked -(to substantially reduce fat, use turkey bacon)
                • 4 1/2 cups low fat Colby/Jack cheese blend, shredded

                Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Rub chicken breasts with seasoned salt.
In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium high heat. Brown the chicken on both sides. Cook until chicken is done, but still quite tender.
Remove chicken from skillet and spread each piece with honey mustard and place in a 9 x 13 baking dish. Cover each piece of chicken with a layer of mushrooms and then crumble one slice of bacon on top.
Cover all with shredded cheese and bake at 350 degrees or until cheese is melted. Per Serving: 492 Calories; 17g Fat (32.2% calories from fat); 78g Protein; 3g Carbohydrate; trace Dietary Fiber; 160mg Cholesterol; 1013mg Sodium.
looks good except for the honey mustard if you used it.
just cause a recipe is low carb does not mean it is atkins induction legal so that could be the reason for your pounds not falling in the good range but heck any loss is a good loss, right? so are you moving to OWL and adding more of those yummy induction veggies to your menu or are you doing an extended induction?

The muffins are from the "low-carb comfort foods cookbook". And, yes, I agree it is a lot of carbs. They're made out of almond meal, egg, butter, cream cheese, splenda (which may be a culprit for me).

I didn't realize that 1/2 (gasp) are needed to be from veggies. Looks like I need to tweak that.

Is there really a difference bewteen 'egg boiled' and 'egg raw' (doing virus scan right now, can't stand to wait for slow computer with too many pages open)?

Technically, it is "Alice Springs Chicken" --but for my personal reference I call it "Madison..." because it so closely mimics that fave reipe of mine.

Alice Springs = Chicken, Cheese, Bacon, Mushrooms. So, I'm thinking the carbs are from cheese/mushrooms.

you're amazing to have looked up the other! Wow!

I think I'm going to do extended induction and work on making half my carbs from veggies.

I found the same thing (junk in meat) problem, which led me to spending a 1/2 hour at the deli counter reading through all the ingredients in the meats they sold. Even the deli counter staff were amazed by what was 'junk' and what wasn't. At first I was embarassed to ask for the nutrition book, and stand there so long, but really the staff were accomodating .

almonds are not allowed on induction. If you are doing induction then you need to be eating only induction legal foods. if you want to move to OWL you can add the almonds back.

Sheesh! I didn't pay attention to the no almonds thing. What a flake I am...I really, really, read the book a year ago, and this go around while I re-read, it was more of a skim. Lesson learned: do it the lazy way, get the lazy results.
