  • Humm.. Should i even try?

Ok i have tried reading up on the pervious posts yet i see none that hae my situation so here goes..
I was encouraged to start atkins the other day, and figured i would give it a shot, not saying that i can't commite to anything, anyway i have been reading up on the 14-day introduction plan, and how you are to eat so many carbs over a course of a day.. Well here is my question/problem...
I am a currently a 26 year old male whom has a very busy schedual, i have not eaten a meal before 4 pm since i was in highschool, i really don't have time nor am i hunger to eat during the day untill i get home. My usuale diet consits of milk in the morning, then what ever i can find in the cupboard for dinner.. or i eat out. My day begins at 5:30, and ends at 11:30. So how is a person that doesn't eat much as it is, and have a total distaste for Fish and salty foods go about the right way of using the Atkins Diet or should i just abandon the hole idea?

I think that if you read the book and plan a little, this can work. If you're up at 5 but not eating until late afternoon, your metabolism/blood sugar is probably whacked anyway...

it could help you get on a the right path
    2-15-10 194.8 - highest ever!
    2-20-10 190.4 - new scale
    3-20-10 177.8 - 1 month
    5-10-10 169.8 - 25 pounds gone!

I know for me that every time I had a weight gain in the past, it correlated with me not eating much during the day and increasing so that I ate the most at dinner, and having late dinners was also a contributing factor to my weight gain.

I am finding that having earlier meals and having them more spaced out during the day makes me less hungry in the evenings, and I don't wake up feeling like I still have a full stomach.

I know Atkineers have said it doesn't matter what time you snack at night and to eat whenever you are hungry, but I think for some, how late you eat before bed-time does make the difference.

Making the decision to lose weight means you are will be committing to forming new eating habits, both in what you eat and how often.

It's extremely important that you get the book Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (version 2002, DANDR for short) and give it a read, focussing in particular on the 'why' behind the diet. The book explains the idea of keeping your blood sugars stable, and how all of that helps contribute to a person's success.

That should help answer a lot of your questions...we're always here to help clarify things so please feel free to ask! :yes

Its our old eating habits that got us overweight. Changes need to be made and new habits need to be learned to lose weight.

I promise it really works! :yes

So if you're willing to put forth the effort to lose weight then by all means stick with us.

You shouldnt go more than 6 hours without eating.

We do have people on this board that work long hours and still succeed. We have very busy people who succeed.

Its probably going to be difficult at first ... but its so worth it!!

          Good luck!!

You don't have to eat 3 full meals daily. You can eat 4 or 6 "snack" sized meals. Just make sure you eat a combination of fat, protein and carbs with these mini-meals. These meals will help keep your blood sugar steady. Your current diet milk in the morning then a big meal more than 12 hours later results in one HUGE insulin spike with your evening meal. In other words, your insulin response would resemble the insulin response of a diabetic----not good for your body and general health at all. You're young, so you might be able to get away with it for a few more years, but it will most likely catch up with you.

While fish is a perfectly acceptable food for Atkins, you don't have to eat it. You don't have to eat salty foods either. In fact, you are probably better off not eating salty foods because for some people excessive salt can cause water retention.

Well, you're certainly NOT eating healthy at the moment, so my first reaction is, if you seriously commit to Atkins, you WILL be eating healthier than you are now!!!

We're all under time constraints, but you know what? Your health is worth it. Don't wait until you're in your 40s and 50s before the revelation hits you that you need to take care of the only body you will have by feeding it nutritious healthy foods.

Read the BOOK (DANDR 2002) and it will help get you started on a path to health, vigor and vitality!

              YOU GOTTA WANT IT.

I have heard some on atkins precook their meals the night before, and the next day pop them in the microwave to warm them up, I wouldnt think that it would taste any different. And you can always carry the snacks meals with you. Atkins is a very workable diet, and you dont have to be a gourmet cook. I mainly just stick with the basics, and it works for me.

Re: Humm.. Should i even try?

                  Hey Deadwolf,
Welcome! I can relate to your situation in that I am a very busy professional and my eating habits in the past sound so much like yours.
For me the decision came down to this: What do I really want? I basically have two choices: Continue eating like I am eating and remain/fat/unhealthy. Or take the plunge, make the committment and go on this food plan which will results in losing weight/health. I chose door number 2!
I'm willing to sacrifice a little time to plan ahead so that I won't have to tolerate eating like I do anymore.
I'm with the others who have answered your post in saying that the best thing for you to do is read the book. Understanding how this food plan works will encourage you to start. But this is a food plan. It's not a diet you can go off and on.

Take your time, think about it, read the book and hopefully by the time you've read the first 10 chapters you'll be a believer.

                  Be well-
                  jade :wave

Some foods definitely taste better, if not the same, the next day.

If I make foods like casseroles, soups, I usually make extra for the times I don't have time to make food. Those egg, ham muffins you see floating around the post are also fantastic meals to prepare and store in your fridge.

Join us and find freedom and good health

A weight gain issue is how your your body tells you it is desperate for some loving attention, some good food, and an opportunity to be first in your life.

it sounds like your body thinks it is being starved. when we starve our bodies by not eating consistent meals, it reverts to a survival mode and hangs onto any stored fat it has for dear life. that is why you can be overweight, but still have your body convinced it is starving.

your current lifestyle of skipping meals and grabbing carbage on the run is so very hard on your health and your body. many people on this forum are very busy. i myself am managing a motel and it can get really crazy. but eating healthy comes first. when i eat healthy the other stuff falls into place. Atkins is my rock.

with a little planning anyone can do Atkins and there is no reason not to have a wide variety of healthy snacks - everything from pepperoni to cheese sticks to hard boiled eggs, delicious meats and veggies. it is so easy.

and you don't have to eat anything you don't really like. but you may find your tastes change naturally as a result of ketosis.

I didn't eat much fish before Atkins either, but now ketosis and far more discriminating taste buds have alerted me to the wonders of fish.

you start by having faith that you can change, and then you are rewarded by a decreased appetite, and altered cravings and a slender body.

please don't abandon Atkins. this way of life has something profound to teach you. you are worth it. and I don't believe you would have posted if you didn't want some encouragement and help.

Thanks to all for the overwhelming responces, didn't expect to many people to respond to little old me..

So I have started this Diet, tring to meet the daily requirements, As of last tuesday i have been tring to get in at least some sort of servering of food every 6-8 hours. I have found time at lunch to grab a quick snack.. usually consiting of meat and cheese. A full dinner after returning home, and a snack later in the evening. Of course watching the ingredients and carbs. keep under or around the required 21 per day. i have replaced the milk in the mornign with Tea, might not be much but it's a start.

Although i might not be up to par with what exactly must be done, i am the road to achieving it. And hope to get to the piont were i can follow the plan with out problems.

I will put forth some of the suggestions and ideas i have read, and will continue to read others ideas and suggestions. There alot of good pionts i had not thought about. Thanks

Eating healthy has alwasy been one thing that has been hard to set in my daily activites, which is one of my goals for doin this diet, get ride of the fast food and sweets i have been craving for years. Plus i am opening myself to new food entrays i never thought i would like or have ignored.

Thanks to all for the input.

                              Deadwolf,

I precook some of my meals on the weekends. Nothing big. Here's some ideas for you:

If you're on the run in the morning, grab a few hard boiled eggs. Celery and cream cheese are a great quick snack. I precook my meat on the weekends and pack them in my lunch during the week. I've had chicken, hamburgers, steaks, pork chops, etc. You can roll up lunch meat in lettuce. There are packets of tuna that you just open and eat.

It's not hard. You're only limited by your imagination.

                              Good luck! ha
