  • Extended Induction question!

I read somewhere in a post that during EXTENDED induction you can have things like low carb peanut butter?? Is this true? And where in the DANDR 02 book can I find this? I am almost on week 4 of induction and new foods would be nice

That's weird... I never heard that

I'd be careful though. I sneaked a little of natural peanut butter and it stalls me. You might be different though..

:wave Extentended Induction doesnt mean to add other foods. It means that we just continue what we were doing for the first two weeks.

Dr. A says we can do extended induction for up to 6 months, but I know people around here who have done it for longer and are fine.

      Good luck to you!

This is a quote I took from another post on this board. Does this answer your question? If not I will try to clarify better. The amount should be 1oz daily of either not both.

If everybody opens their DANDR to page 86 of the paperback, chapter 8, you will see a section on nuts and seeds. the 3rd paragraph says very clearly after the first 2 weeks of induction not after induction is over after the first 2 weeks of induction, when you can introduce nuts and seeds into your menus, .......
Dr Atkins was very clear in his mind that only very overweight folk should be doing extended inductions. before DANDR 2002 went to press in Aug of 2001 he was on a YAhoo Chat and was ask about how long induction should be done and the answer was pretty shocking when you consider DANDR 3rd edition was about ready for publishjoing by then.

Can you please list the page number in DANDR where Dr. A says this? I only found that he encourages anyone to stay on Induction longer (page 13. He does say that if you have a lot of weight to lose you definitely ought to consider sticking with Induction, but he doesn't discourage folks with a lot less to lose to move on to OWL, unless they are bored (and other factors).

I did not find anything about a 6 month time limit. Perhaps that is on the website, but I don't give the site as much weight as the book.

I just read that part last night...It says we can do induction for 6 months OR LONGER. And I just scoured the book for like 15 mins and I can't find where it says that! I will keep looking and get back to you

OK I just referenced this quote in my book...the book says
"After the first two weeks of Induction, when you can introduce nuts and seeds into your menu, you will find they make excellent snacks....."

PERSONALLY I think that is VERY vague...it does NOT say during extended induction...it simply says AFTER the first 2 weeks in induction, not immediately right after...just after, some point in the future...and I would assume that is when you reach the nuts and seeds rung, since it says no where else in the book anything about adding in nuts and seeds in extended induction...what do you guys think?

I personally interpret it that way too. Wait until that rung of OWL.

For myself I waited after 11 mos of induction before adding nuts and seeds. The rungs are a suggestion or guideline at how to add additional foods not an absolute. As for lengths of time, he mentions in the book a person on Induction for 2 years. Whether or not you add nuts and seeds or not you still have the same concerns similar to cheese and cream, portion control. They are not a "eat liberal" food no matter how many nutrients they add back to your diet. Continuing the learning process of the addition of foods back into your diet especially for those planning months of time doing Induction and don't want to move on to OWL.

Here are the passages and page numbers for the nuts argument:
After the first two weeks of Induction, when you can introduce nuts and seeds into your menus, you will find they make excellent snacks and often an unexpected and tasty ingredient in an entree or vegetable dish. You can also use ground nuts and seeds in lieu of breading before baking or sauteing chicken breasts, veal scallops or fish fillets. Like all good things, nuts and seeds should be eaten in moderation. An ounce of most nuts or seeds contains roughly 5 grams of carbs.
                  p 62

Eat absolutely no fruit, bread, pasta, grains, starchy vegetables or dairy products other than cheese, cream or butter. Do not eat nuts or seeds in the first two weeks. Foods that combine protein and carbohydrates, such as chickpeas, kidney beans and other legumes, are not permitted at this time.
                  p. 83
I don't think there will ever be conclusive agreement on nuts during Extended Induction. To me that's the genius of this WOE. You are able to adapt to taste and need within the bounds of the few rules.

very good points...I may add in some pine nuts or macadamia nuts in the next few months if i stay on induction...I still haven't decided how long I will be staying though...

I'm still doing a clean induction. It works for me, I'm not bored with the food, I'm losing weight consistently. When/if I get bored, I will move on to owl. I know that nuts, berries all that stuff is somewhere in my future, but right now, losing at this pace is so wonderful, I don't want to do anything to slow it down!

I think America57 has the right idea, I would just wait until the apporpriate rung for them.

Whenever we've added something beyond the original induction list we've always stalled... just be careful... if you you've lived without it for 4 weeks ... how much longer can you? There are many seasonings that can give you new found love with your food... explore those options first.
