  • I CANT do OWL... BAD 4 me

Hi. I did my 14 day induction and then moved onto OWL two days ago and did okay the first day, but on day two, I ate the entire kitchen (waffles, grapes, toast with jelly, a can of fruit cocktail, and 2 bowls of fruit loops) - like a ravenous beast, and I could not stop myself - nor did I want to!

What a waste! So, I have decided to come back to do an extended induction so I can meet my goals. I think I need to give this another month before I venture out into the world of other foods. Even the first day of OWL with the veggies I went nutso and ended up eating 2.5 too many carbs. (I LOVE veggies!) So, yeah... Maybe i can try that again later...

    Hi, Andrea!

Don't be hard on yourself. There's nothing wrong with an extended induction.

I couldn't eat any berries without major carb/sugar cravings when I first tried out that rung so I stayed below that. 6-8 months later I was able to add them in a few times a week without that problem. There is no 'right' timetable, except for what's right for you.

It's about learning to eat well AND relearning how to get rid of old bad habits. I have the first one down, but still working on the second. Sometimes it's not easy, but it's always worth it!

      Welcome to E.I. Andrea.

I would certainly not stress over the 2.5 carbs of veggies in the first attempt of OWL. Getting you back in control of your eating or at least trusting yourself again should be the priority though. Stay in extended Induction as long as you need to -- it is your WOE. That is blessing of this regimen. It keeps you control, and you move on when you are ready.

        2.5 carbs is nothing.
Maybe you just need a couple days to "adjust"

The next time you try OWL, you might want to do it slowly and make sure you only add 5 net carbs of an Induction veggie that you have eaten before without any problems. Most people eat between 10-15 net carbs on Induction, so when they move to OWL they eat between 15-20 net carbs during Rung 1.

Usually uncontrolled eating is a sign that something you ate triggered a blood sugar response. So, the next time you attempt OWL, you might want to keep a very strict accounting of everything you are eating. From my own OWL experience, I can't eat certain combinations of veggies because the combinations trigger overeating in me. So I avoid those combinations because I don't want the food to control me.

I tried OWL, a few weeks ago, and I went into a carb frenzy and completely fell off the wagon. Maybe you should just wait until you truly feel that you can go into OWL and succeed. Until then, enjoy Extended Induction, lol

exacty what did you add back from the acceptable veggies in the form of 5 more net carbs that triggered this?

Was TOM due? if so it could be that and not your OWL as hormones effect blood sugar.

I was right in the middle of TOM... I added brocolli and zuchinni, which I probably should not have done both. I had had zuchinni once on induction. I just went over the deep end. My mom says its because of TOM also. I just wanted to do this right and blew it. I felt completley out of control. BLAH! I am just going to do this extended induction because I REALLY like not havng to worry about cravings. I am still not back in ketosis since my little "splurge" though, and that is annoying. I am writing down everything and I joined a few challenges (Exercise and weight loss) to keep me motivated.

Re: I CANT do OWL... BAD 4 me

how do you know you are not in ketossi as defined by Dr Atkins as the burning of fats for fuel? Peeing on a stix isn't the definative answer.

As I posed in the FAQ all the stix tell you ios the amount of EXCESS ketones in your blood not being burned up as fule at the moment that urine was produced. You can have the most dark purple stix cause you ate 5 pounds of butter yesterday and gain weight! As long as you are properly eatting your Atkins acording to the rules you are in ketosis no matter what color the stix. Learn the physical symptoms like the increased thirst, change in oder of pee sweat or breath, loss of appetite, odd taste in your mouth are just a few of them.
Know that TOM can take your ketosis blood sugar craving control on a wild ride and deal with it every month withpreplanned things to help you like some TOM sweets like choclate blobs recipe in data base, extra exercise, a higher fat eatting during this time, no new to your foods or carb increases during this time and you should have a smoother ride the next time. it will still be bad but at least you know it is coming and you can deal with it.

According to the stix - I've NEVER been in ketosis!
