        Thanks.

I'm already in the 20's chapter wise. I had a 2nd kidney stone, so my kidney doctor said I need to drink 96 oz. per day MINIMUM so that will go hand in hand with Atkins!

BTW, I really get bored with just plain water. Does Crystal Light count or something eqivalent? Can this be used during induction?
Start date: 1/18/05 201 lbs. Currently 176 lbs!

bpollina, the only thing that counts towards your water intake is water.

Crystal Light and the such should be saved for after your first 14 days of induction. Make sure that if you do decide to have some, it's best to drink the canned type, since it has Splenda. Also, Diet Rite contains splenda as well as the diet RC (read labels to make sure).

            [quote="Chynna"]Welcome Newbies!

You should take a multivitamin without iron (One-A-Day makes one called "Carb Smart" and Atkins Basic Formula 3).

Chynna - thanks for naming the One-A-Day Carb Smart! I'd purchased a bottle a few months ago and then fell out of the shower (yes, it's possible! lol) and gave myself a concussion. I took the vitamin, not realizing I had a concussion, and proceded to vomit.

I just took one and they're now on my kitchen counter, on top of the can of decaf coffee to remind me to take one in the mornings.

            Thanks agan!

You can flavour your water with lemon or crystal light but be sure to count the carbs you use to do so. And remember flavour means just that - a hint. Also, you can flavour with Fruit20, just be sure if you use 8 oz of it you count it as one carb. It would be best to try and drink as much plain water as you can however, if it comes down to you getting absolutely sick of water and not drinking it.. by all means flavour it.

Remember, you need to do what you have to to STAY on plan. If it means flavouring your water because you are absolutely sick of it, then do so. I don't believe this way of life, even induction is only this way works.

Plain water is the best way to go... but 96 oz of water with a squirt of lemon or an oz of crystal light mixed in is better than 50 oz of plain water total for a day. Many people have to break themselves into drinking water... i found once i got use to drinking 3 liter bottles of water a day, i tend to reach for the water before i do my beloved pop.. and they sit right next to each other on my desk.

Also, make sure you break up your water so you don't feel drowned.. 96 oz a day means if you get up at 6 am and have dinner at 6 pm.. you will have to drink a whopping 8 oz am hour. Go buy an 8 oz bottle and you will see that it really isn't that much to drink every hour.

Hang in there.. you will find it be more of a habit after a while.

Roxiebarr, thank you very much! :hug I am definitely working hard to get there! My last weigh in was on New Year's Day, so hopefully I've made it to Onederland by now! Sure am keeping my fingers and toes crossed! :yes

UGH, rain! Glad to see you're getting that water in! Just make sure not to consume too much in a short time! It's dangerous! So try to split your water consumption up throughout the day!

BTW... I think your ticker is incomplete. There's usually a goal weight or goal amount to lose at the other end as well as the number lost and how much to go at the bottom. Make sure you complete the whole set-up to get that added on there!

Happy low-carbing and enjoy your day!

Here's the bad news - cholesterol can initially go up when starting Atkins. You need to give yourself at least 6 months, to be fair.

The women in my family have very high natural cholesterol, but we also live past our 80s. Both my mom and I experienced an immediate jump in our total cholesterol, but also a *drastic* improvement in tryglicerides and glucose. Over time, your cholesterol will begin to fall, but our doctors tended to freak out.

Given what I know about our family history and how cholesterol works, I wasn't about to risk damaging my kidneys by going on statins. Mom took them for about 6 weeks before quitting (her total was over 300, mine is slightly over 200).

I'm due for my annual next month, when I'll retest, but the last blood work I had done showed a marked improvement in HDL, a slight improvement in LDL, and incredible improvement on tryglicerides and glucose.

Recent information indicates that tryglicerides play a larger part in risk than total cholesterol, so take that into consideration when evaluating risks (both of not taking statins and of taking them).

See if your doctor will give you 6 months, and then make sure you limit consumption of red meat. Fish, chicken, seafood are all good. Also, take garlic, fish oil, and some of the other supplements that help lower cholesterol (can't think of them all off hand).

                            Newbie!!!

I found this site from a magazine that I bought at the store today and I am so excited. I HAVE got to lose weight. No question about it. I really hope that this lifestyle change will work for me. I am trying to decide when I need to get started on the 2 week induction. Can I go ahead and start low carb eating this week and do the induction next week. I have a hard week planed coming up going to market for my gift shop and it is not that I do not think I eat the way I am suppose to but I sure need to feel decent and I am scared I will get the headaches and all that come with the 2 week induction. What do you guys think would be best!!!!

                              Hi and Welcome :wave
I'm sure you will get better advice on what you are asking then what I can tell you but I would say "something is better than nothing" I know introduction is very important but I would just think that watching your carb intake the best you can till you can really start is better than nothing.

                                Welcome to ha !

Before I started Atkins, I did my homework on it. I checked out the www.atkins.com website and read up on everything I could. I also searched this board and found some great info to help me prepare myself before starting this WOE (way of eating). I basically weened myself from certain foods a few weeks before I was able to start Atkins. And I also believe that anything is better than nothing.

Make sure to get your copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002 edition. It's best if you read that to prepare yourself for your new lifestyle and make sure to get your vitamins and supplements while you are out buying the necessary items to get you started.

Anytime you can start this WOE is the best time. :yes
