  • Fell off the wagon -- advice please.

My sister-n-law (a professional cook) has been in town for 10 days, I've gained back 5 lbs of the 11 that I originally lost. I am on extended induction. Question: How do I get back on the wagon??? Do I start like a "clean" induction?? No Splenda, no shakes, etc?? I do drink all my water. I got an elliptical a few days ago. I was feeling like the scale wasn't moving at all before she arrived anyway. Someone please help me get started.

    Hello,

I would say that if you are on an extended induction anyway then yes, do a totally clean re-induction for two weeks and then after that see where you go from there. The reason for this is that is you get all the cheats out of your system you will find it easier to cope without shakes etc, which can cause stalls in some people - which might have explained your lack of loss before your sister in law arrived.

Good for you getting an elliptical. To make sure you use it, you could consider signing up for an exercise challenge? The mileage one might be good.

    Best of luck

Is she leaving soon?? [I'm having in-law issues at the moment too!]

Either way, try to remember the determination and drive you had when you were just a week or so into this new way of life, how powerful you felt over the choices you were making, how proud you were as the pounds started to drop and the cravings left ... get there again!!!

      You can do it!

And a clean induction is probably the best way to realize that ... kind of clean the slate and erase the past 10 days of trying to make nice-nice with the in-laws!

Well, the one thing that comes to mind when family visits is, exactly who are they visiting? You or the food? I think you can control the food that comes in your home or it's going to control you. If you're going to someone else's house, you can still control the food you eat by enjoying a cooler of food you bring.

That being said, the best advise I can give you is to look back at the past 10 days and figure out why you gave into the foods you did, learn from that lesson, and move on from the moment you stopped your Induction phase. Your body may take longer to ditch the excess baggage added on because it may think you're trying to starve it and go into defense mode. The most important part is to move on unless you haven't learned your lesson about the reasons why you gave into the foods you are choosing to leave out of your daily diet in order to lose weight. Besides, I think with a great sis-in-law that can cook very well, might learn a few lessons from you!

Ps...sorry if I sounded harsh, but I can totally seeing you excell and doing awesome taking care of you by the way you lost 11 pounds in the beginning of this way of eating for life

I was thinking about your situation as my sister-in-law loves to cook, she is an official gourmet cook, and she brings over the most wonderful meals for Sunday to my house, and she also makes absoutely fabulous desserts... desserts to die for, so to speak.

Another problem for me is that no one in my family can understand why one would want to lose weight unless they were extremely over weight, I mean by one or two hundred pounds. So on principle, my relatives have never supported me on any diet, ever.

Then a couple of years ago a car crashed into my motorcycle and my knees hit the pavement and are weak now as I walk up the stairs, I mean I can still run up the stairs but I have osteoporosis. The doctor said that less weight helps my knees to stay healthy longer. So now everytime my family and I eat out or there is a special occassion I just mention how much better my knees are on the stairs, no pain etc and no one says a word about what I eat.

I always have with me; boiled eggs, cheese or macademia nuts wherever I leave the house and that has helped me stay cheat free since I have joined this board 75 days ago. For sweets I find liquid Stevia in decaf coffee or tea is excellent, it serves as my sweet treat after meals or any time and it has zero carbs and no effect on the blood sugar so no restrictions on how much Stevia I can use. Stevia in tea satisfies my worst cravings for any kind of sweets or desserts because it is so sweet.

I don't know if it would work for you if you said your doctor put you on a diet for a specific health reason, impending diabetes or something, and if you mentioned it to everyone I think they might start supporting your efforts. And if you were always prepared with your own food so you would never expose yourself to any 4 hours in the day without access to your legal food and therefore you would never be hungry, then I can't see how you would be tempted to get off this diet, which as you know is not so much a diet as it is a way of life.

I think if you experiment with how this Atkins way of eating works for you, you might find that you actually prefer it to the typical flour and sugar diet that was culturally established historically before people knew any better.
