Re: Dr. Atkins says safe for 6 months

I think it is fine for people to stay in induction up to six months and then move on to OWL. I'm sure many people do this and do fine. For me, I was tempted to stay on induction until my goal weight but decided to move on because I wanted to learn how to do it all correctly so that when I reach my goal weight I will know how to continue eating. I do think that OWL is the best way for me for the reasons Dr Atkins sets out in the "Are You Ready for Phase Two?" chapter. But like I said, I have no problem with other people staying on in induction. In my earlier post I was just giving my reasons for moving on from induction and why I think people recommend moving on so much- because when others ask for advice about why they are stalled and they have been on induction for a couple of months one idea is to recommend that maybe they should move on and see if it helps. Just like Dr Atkins says, it is a personal choice you make.

Re: Dr. Atkins says safe for 6 months

There is also an article about induction abuse if I remember correctly. We have had many successful people here stay on induction for 6 months or more. But, I will say in the five years I have been here one of the biggest problems I have seen is people staying on induction too long for the quick fix and then (like everyone has stated) getting bored and falling off. I would have to say I have seen more people fail that way then any other. I think the numbers would verify the fact that the longer you stay on induction the more you decrease your odds of success? This is just IMHO!

I'm still on induction (Since Jan 12th, 200 and I am starting to get bored with the food choices like almost 80 days later. I dip a lot of my food in mayo (eggs, chicken, steak)..Or mustard! I had a habit of using this 1g carb salsa every now and then.... I guess I still do from time to time as it really spices up the meal.

This was entirely my fault, because I got in the rut of always eating the same things. This time, I still plan to do an extended induction (at least a couple months), but not as long, and I'm going to make sure my menus have a lot more variety. (Try more different induction-friendly recipes, and sauces - every meal, I dipped *something* in mayo.)

        Good luck with your loss!

Re: Dr. Atkins says safe for 6 months

As Juli wrote, Dr. Atkins has 1 sentence in the entire book that says staying on Induction longer than 2 weeks may be beneficial to those who have a severe metabolic resistance to weight loss because it might correct those imbalances. For the rest of us, it doesn't make the weight loss faster or slower.

From the experience of this Board, I can tell you that the folks who aren't severely metabolically resistant who stay on Induction for a prolonged period of time hit a plateau that is not broken until they move onto OWL---even the OWLers who purposefully keep their carbs well below their CCLL run into this problem. The folks who stay on Induction and continue to lose are either truly metabolically resistant to weight loss OR they have little cheats during their extended Induction---a bite of fruit here, a piece of potato there, a serving of low carb wheat noodles now and then, a handful of nuts here and there, extra cream sometimes, extra carbs once in a while, etc.

It's an individual choice, but be informed before you make it.

While keeping in mind that everyone is unique, my experience was that I could lose every bit as fast at 40g net carbs, as I did at 20g, if most of my carbs came from veggies. I moved to Rung 1 after an Extended Induction, to break a pause in weight loss. It worked, and had I not moved on, I wouldn't have discovered how many extra veggies I could have and still lose weight at the same rate as 20g. I stayed on Rung 1 for a couple of months, upping my carbs on the weeks that I didn't introduce a new food, to begin my search for my CCLL.

Remember - Induction is a sort of "turn-around" process for your body and OWL stands for "Ongoing Weight Loss" - and, oh, so important!
