Bad taste in mouth on Atkins!

  • Bad taste in mouth on Atkins!

    Any suggestions for the horrible taste I have in my mouth on Atkins? The diet is working for me but I struggle with the bad breath thing.

    I used to use lemon slices in my water to freshen up a bit, a salt water gargle seemed to help too but that might have been all in my head.

    You do tend to adjust, drink plenty of H20!

      The horrible taste is a reminder of ketosis so keep that in mind !

      I brushed my teeth a half dozen times a day in early Atkins ... pick up a package of Wisp disposable toothbrushes if this absolutely drives you crazy.

        Thanks for the suggestions! Wow IrishIrish - you lost a ton of weight and have kept it off. Any advice for a newbie?

          Honestly I get gum. It's gum with <1g Carb or a whole carb. If you do that get one that will last you til you want to eat so your not sticking carbs in your mouth all day

          I get excited when I get that because I know I'm in ketosis.

            My advice is dull and boring ...
            • Read DANDR 2002, completely ... reread it often ... refer to it often ... and remember it was written by the expert, Dr. Atkins. Don't try to second guess his advice.
            • Make copies of the Acceptable Food List for Induction and the Rules of Induction. You will find copies as "stickies" under the FAQ Forum on this bulletin board. I kept copies in my purse, at my desk, my briefcase, in the glove compartment, at work, on my nightstand. Yes ... I'm a fanatic but much less of one than I once was.
            • Move everyday ... a little or a lot. Just make sure to move, walk, exercise, dance or do something else you enjoy as long as you move.
            • Plan your menus. Don't let the next post be that you were faced with eating Poptarts or starving. Plan, plan, plan!
            • Have "go to plans". If you are having a night out, a night in, a party, a cookout, a wedding, a vacation, a wake or funeral or sitting in a hospital waiting room ... give thought to what you would eat.
            • And carry a bottle of water all the time. It is a reminder that you need to hydrate.
            • And return to the often. Pay it forward. Help others. Reach out and share your success.

              It's WONDERFUL advice. Most people probably do these things, but even if you do.... you need that little reminder that it's necessary for our success.

              I like to give myself rewards for every other mini goal I accomplish. So for ever ten pounds I lose I get to do something... I plan them in advance so I get excited about it. This last mini goal I went and got my hair chopped off

              And a nice shirt other than a HOODIE. I wore hoodies all winter and even the last couple summers!!!
              This next mini goal I am going shopping for some better fitting pants since I have to pull them up all the time right now and a couple more shirts. The mini goal rewards are what make me want to keep pushing the next pound off.

                  I can completely relate. I've been doing an extended induction (Day 15) and I've had that taste in my mouth for days. I know my body is in ketosis because I broke down and purchased those ketosis strips and every time I use them they turn a deep purple which brings a smile to my face, but I'm just not losing as quickly as I like....I know, slow and steady wins the race...lol

                    I'm glad someone said a "metallic taste". I was beginning to think my stainless steel water bottle was leaching something into the water! I drink as much water as possible and still have the taste in my mouth. Oh well, better to have than not!

                        Lol. I'm sorry but thats just a little funny. Bad breath can actually come from a number of things and in fact when you go into ketosis on the atkins diet it can indeed cause bad breath for some of us. I am one of them. You can eat 3 meals a day and snack here and there on atkins approved foods and you'll still have the bad breath because your keeping yourself in ketosis.
