  • When do i start moving off

Hi Folks. I am on extended induction. My starting weight was 265 as of this morning i am down to 244. I started 8/7/09. I have read that if you are getting bored with what you are eating on induction you should start moving on to the next phase. However i am trying to get down to 165 to 175 (I am 5 foot 9 inches tall) and with that amount of weight to loose im not sure if i should start adding carbs yet or not. I have not yet read the DANDR book yet so i have been going at this diet rather blindly just using information from this website and the official Atkins website. I know i need to get a copy of the book and read it several times but untill i can do that any help would be appriciated.

As you said, you will need to read Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) soon to avoid those mistakes people make if they don't know what the rules are.
To tide you over till you get your copy take a look at the Atkins Diet FAQ forum
Atkins Low Carb Dieting - FAQ's - Atkins Diet

and for a start read those threads to do with how Atkins works

what the rules of induction are

and what to eat on induction

I would suggest saving them on your computer and even printing them out for reminding yourself when not near a computer.

Many of the other threads in that forum are useful to read too - some of them several times
    .
There is also a wallet-sized list of the induction allowed foods

that you can print out and keep with you for reference when choosing/cooking foods to keep you on track.

thoupgh you ahve bneen on induction a while now it would definitely be an idea to read them all and maybe alter your food choices if you find you have been diverging from what it written in DANDR. The Atkins company have altered some of the basic rules to encourage people to buy their products so some of the stuff on their website actually contradicts Dr Atkins words.

As for when to move to the main weightloss phase of Atkins (ongoing weight loss/OWL) many people find their losses slow and even stall if they stay on induction too long and find that moving to OWL kickstarts it. Take a look at some of the threads in the OWL forum to see how they are getting on.

Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

I'm sure you don't want to be back here again trying to figure out the phases of the diet and how to follow it properly next time or a third time around. Your most important task right now is to get the book. The way of eating is the last thing in the world you should be approaching blindly. You should be able to pick up a copy this weekend or order it online. Not a big deal. It's cheap and can be had!!

Don't be afraid of leaving extended induction. More often that not, at least initially, most people who've hung out too long in extended induction find their bodies start shedding more weight during OWL. It does shake your body up a little, reintroducing things it's not used to anymore. For some people, that alone jump starts their losses. Do it. It's worth it. I lost more weight on OWL and was certainly waaaaay more satisfied. It was a win win. So no more being afraid of progress. Go claim it...and do it!!

Re: When do i start moving off

Thanks guys. Those links really did help allot. I was going off the induction list from the Atkins website and i do see it is different then the one here. Also i have been having 1 to 2 atkins bars a day. I have lost over 20 pounds i can only imagine what i would have lost by now had i just quit being a scrooge and bought the book from the beginning! Lesson learned. I will head to the book store as soon as my wife comes back with the car.

          1. You can find books at used book stores or Goodwill. I don't think they cost more than $1 or so.
          2. I stayed with Induction and extended it because I thought I needed to in order to lose my weight. Thing is, the week I started OWL and moved slowly up the rungs, I continued to lose at least what I had been losing on the extended Induction.

OWL has a bad rap for those who have been afraid or too uninformed to do it.

Best of luck to you as you continue this WOL.

Hi Bob! Congrats on your weight loss so far.

Moving into OWL can made a HUGE difference in your menus. Having a little more veggie is nice but when you continue on into dairy, then nuts, then berries you really have a lot of options for different dishes.

However, I believe it's critical once you start moving into OWL that you thoroughly read (and understand) the instructions both in the book and here in the OWL forum and stickies. It is a little more complicated than just eating off of the Induction list. It is important to do it right as this is where we learn what foods and food combinations work with our bodies.

Good luck on OWL and hope to see you over on those boards.

p.s. I moved into OWL right after Induction and continue to lose weight at a steady pace.
